Hey does anybody know how to do the cool vector art like the type you see on the GTA box covers? I've seen other tutorials on the technique but they were far too detailed, their end result was something like the art in A Scanner Darkly... far too much detail for me and it takes too much time for the effect I want to achieve.

So you're looking for something more along the line of simple cel-shading. Google Cel-Shading tutorials and you'll be set.

Cheers blood, I did some research and I'll be ripping off R*'s creativity in no time :D The closest I got to the effect was Poster Edges. That seemed to wow my friends but it's beginning to lose it's charm.
Thanks again.

Hey thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I put a pic (http://mrshizzle.blogspot.com) up on my website - it's not the greatest looking and there are some details missing, but I think I grasped the idea... If Bert does an episode on this technique, I'll be lovin' myself.

I took a look a the GTA art and while it can be done in Illustrator, I think there's some Photoshop, there as well. Maybe try doing the line work in Illustrator and the rest in Photoshop.

I'll try that. I just got a copy of Illustrator yesterday and i've been dying to test it out.

I followed your advice and it turns out that (though said before over 1 million times) Illustrator is the best app to do the line work in. I just have a problem when transferring the work to photoshop, all of my paths seem to get lost somewhere along the way and all i'm left with is a flat, 1-layerd, no path raster image. Is there a way I can preserve the paths when I transfer the work to photoshop?
1 more thing, I can't seem to get a hold of this "tapered brush" I keep hearing about in Ilustrator, there are never any brushes in my brushes palette (even when I select the brush tool). Where do I look or what do I have to select for the brushes to get turned on?

(   - Ok I did it so that nobody else will have to - i'm sorry about the tripple posting, they should have an "edit post" feature though... )
Anyway, I figured out the problem with the bushes (didn't look around the interface hard enough hehe) Still got the prob with the paths though... any takers?

I'm looking forward to seeing that episode. If it does come to pass then I'll feel so famous - little ol' me actually influencing an episode of a kick-ass show. Awesome!

When transferring the paths from Illustrator to Photoshop, you're bound to wind up with Smart Objects, right? Perhaps what you really need to do is transfer different layers separately, rather than moving over the whole image. Did you know that if you have both programs open, you can use the move tool and simply drag the image from one window to the other? That should make moving layers over pretty easy (select just the layer you want to transfer, and hide the rest. With Illustrator, sometimes it can be hard not to influence the other paths, even if they have their own layer). From there, you can always rasterize the paths, or use the paths more as guidelines. It's best to try to leave the transferred layers intact so that you don't destroy anything by accident, but luckily you'll still have the original illustrator file on hand if something does go wrong. Oh, and with different parts on separate layers, "preserve transparency" can easily be your best friend to make your Photoshop wizardry easier and faster to work with.
Hopefully there's something vaguely coherent in that mess I just typed, haha. :D

bert covers this type of thing when he does coloring. all the art in GTA is simple line drawings that are colored comic book style, or as a previous poster said cell shading. the line art can be much easier if you have a pen tablet with a good number of pressure sensitivities, however its not necessary. i love to work in illustrator to do this kind of work and you can lay out all the basic colors and lines and then export to ps for final colorization. this gets to be pretty comfortable to do fairly quickly and i really suggest you use the pen tool for it as poster edges is a cool effect but you can do much better in illustrator as well as make the object as big or a small as you want without affecting the size of the file. Plus if you use the pen tool in ps you'll actually have a bigger file than you would if you created the same exact file in illustrator. for a look at what illustrator is capable of check this site out.
