I have an old issue that I never understood when connecting to a router. Knowing the network name and password, I had a connection but the TCP/IP wasn't syncing up. What causes that and how do you fix it?

I can't remember what I did when I faced that about couple years ago and I never knew why that happened. Now, trying to help someone out, raises questions I forgot & never knew. Probably something simple & stupid, but I haven't seen that enough to know better. Trying to look up the issue hasn't been any help so far.

Depending how you are trying to do it, the router should be set up as a DHCP server, and the local machine needs to be set up to request IP details via DHCP.

One good way to force the DHCP cycle, is to type "ipconfig /renew" at a command prompt.

We need a little more info. What problem exactly is this someone else having.

If the IP on the router has ever been changed then that new IP is what you should be pointing your browser to. If you don't know this address then you need to reset the router to factory default so the IP address can be reverted.

Thanks Token, the DHCP needed checked in the router. I don't know what happened there, now the guy's router has a password along with the wireless.

I started out helping this guy because of a bad drive through a friend. One thing led to another and I tried getting him to go to someone who knows more. That ended up being the only issue I couldn't help with. It was an education for me too, now if I can only remember what to look out for. LOL
