Start small. Train for a half-marathon first. And if you like it keep going.

I would say start even smaller than that.
Have you ever run before? Do you jog? I would say start training for something very small, like a 3 or 5 K. Maybe even start with a 5 K walk.
Build up slowly. When done right, running can be great exercise. When done incorrectly or too quickly, running can be the easiest way to injure yourself.

thanks for the input... i absolutely need to start small, at the gym today i gave it a shot, i ran 3 miles in 30 minutes.. my grand idea of finishing the nyc marathon seem pretty slim .. maybe i will set a personal goal to hit 10 miles or something..
but yea, when at the gym, im going to now hit the treadmill a lot more. I agree, i want to start small... i should look into some 5k's or even like some local runs... if i can ever hit 5 miles i'd be happy too

Do you have any friends into swimming or biking? A good place to start might be one of those triathlons that let you split the race as part of a 3-person team where each of you do one event.
I see from your profile that you are from white plains, ny. I used to live around there. There are a few good races in Rye,NY. The Rye Derby is one of them and the Turkey Run which is around Thanksgiving. You should check those out. They are good low pressure events

I saw it on TV once. I also saw the Boston marathon.
Thats as close as I ever get, but I wish you luck.
