So what albums have come out this year that you think are worth the $29.95 or whatever a CD cost nowadays? (for those that don't know, a CD is an optical media format made before the days of BitTorrent)

I think Yellowcard's Lights and Sounds and Less Than Jake's In With The Out Crowd top my list, but there are a lot of new albums out this year that I have just not had time to listen to yet.

I don't know about best of the year. At my age there are just so many bands, groups and "artists" that I just skip past, that I don't have the breadth of knowledge to say BEST.

That said two of my favorites this year are:

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah -- Show Your Bones
The Raconteurs -- Broken Boy Soldiers

As far as playtime, the album I've listened to the most that came out this year would be "The Sounds - Dying to say this to you"

And I didn't really like it all that much to begin with, but the more and more I listen to it the more and more I like the Angels & Airwaves debut.

The new Audioslave album is making it's way up there also because there's only one man I'd go gay for, and that man is Chris Cornell.

Oh hell yes. Also loving the new album from JET (which came out yesterday). The new Weird Al album isn't out here yet....but it sounds excellent.

If stuff that was good in the 70's isn't good now, then there is a whole classic rock industry that's gonna go out of business. It may not be revolutionary, but that doesn't mean they're not worth a listen.

Is that really worth picking up? All the reviews I've read on it haven't been good and say it's nowhere near as good as Fire

I think it's better than the previous 2 albums. I can listen to it the whole way through without skipping tracks. There's more variety in their style which I like. Plus, it helped that I saw them live last Monday and that was the 1st time hearing songs off the new album.

WoW, this temporal anomaly needs to be dealt with.

No, no. The stuff from the 70s is still great because it's classic and was revolutionary for its time. Wolfmother just isn't creative, and are trying to cash in on the classic rock genre. To me, they are just a step above a crappy cover band.

Alright, that I get, but I'd still rather listen to a cover band that panic! at the disco.

Bands like Wolfmother just introduce a younger generation to those classic 70's bands man. Just like listening to Marilyn Manson in High School introduced me to Bowie......and for that I will always respect Manson. Point is, liking a band is your own opinion and it's neither wrong nor right. At this point in time (although I'm older and do appreciate those 70's bands) the WOLFMOTHER CD is rocking my stereo at home and I'm loving it. Deal.

Threat Signal - "Under Reprisal"

They out Mnemic'd Mnemic... that's gotta count for something. Yeah, it's processed and ProTool'd... but who cares? It blisters and burns, and tears the face off of 90% of the new metal bands out there. I'm seeing them with the afore-mentioned Danes, as well as Soilwork and Darkest Hour in 2 weeks. I really wana see them pull this stuff off live!

Queensryche - "Operation: Mindcrime II"

Not metal, but damned if it isn't everything and the kitchen sink. It's dark and moody, true to the original, and reflective of what Queensryche's become... in a good way.

Unearth - "III: In the Eyes of Fire"

Definately heavier than their last, and a great warm, organic production. Awesomely mediocre instrumental at the end too (but I'm a sucker for that stuff).

All That Remains - "The Fall of Ideals"

Watching the slow evolution of metalcore... sharper, heavier, yet more melodic. I always liked these guys, and this album is a step in the right direction.

Pharaoh - "The Longest Night"

What would Maiden sound like in 2006 if they didn't try to be Dream Theater like they do now? Pharaoh. Their debut smokes, too.

Scar Symmetry - "Pitch.Black.Progress"

Techno-esque metalcore. Hey, it's good stuff.

Biggest Disappointments:
Iron Maiden... This 20 minute song crap is best left to Liquid Tension Experiment, and even they barely pull it off. Stop. Please.
Lamb of God... As sort of expected, it wore out VERY quickly (their albums always do).
Blind Guardian... Not terrible, and I don't mind the 70's rock direction THAT much, but if had more songs like "Another Stranger Me", "Fly", and "Lionheart", it would have been much better. Seeing them in November anyway.. still very excited.
Mercenary..About 2 really good songs, and the rest are just ok.
Lacuna Coil... What the hell is this? The best song is a cover?!

Ok, so, sorry for all the lists. I geek out about music, and where else can I safely do that?

Its a little crazy, as most usual PJ stuff is but I really dug the samples that he used like the pixies. For a less hip hop feel I really dug a group that I found by mistake Mojave 3, I think the album is called pieces of you or something but I can't completely remember, Less than Jake - In with the outcrowd. Can you really go wrong with less than jake.

Ha if you are talking crazy hip hop what about Kool Keith (he has an album out every 5 min) . He came to toronto though and he is showing his age badly. He forgot the lyrics to half his songs, showed up late and stoped half way through the set to sell his new bootleg album...priceless. I mean he deserves his cred for being a true legend and being old school and stuff but this is clearly an abuse of this power.

I just realized another album I've benn listening to over and over came out at the begenning of the year, so that qualifies also.

Richard Ashcroft - Keys to the World

It's the 2nd solo album by the dude who was the lead singer of The Verve, if you were ever a fan of Urban Hymns or even their one big hit Bittersweet Symphony, check it out. The title track kicks ass and there is even a live version of Bittersweet Symphony as a bonus track.

One of the best albums I've heard this year is Reel Big Fish's
"Our Live Album Is Better Than Your Live Album"

Go pick it up. It's awesome x3 (2 CDs and a DVD).

Also, because I'm a big "Weird Al" fan, his new album "Straight Outta Lynwood" is awesome and amazing. Fa sho.

That's all I have to say. Peace.

**** yeah! Dragonforce is the SHIT!!! I've been a huge fan for like 7 years. I love these guys. I remember I had their demo and the levels were better than they were for the Valley of the Damned CD. The performances and everything were better on the CD, though. Anyone seen 'em live?

so far liking JET's new album a lot...I even paid for it...

also John Mayer's new CD, Contiuum, is really good, I know the single has been overplayed like a mofo, but the rest of it is very good

It must really be a sign of the times when the marker as to whether or not an album is good or not depend on whether or not you payed for it.

No doubt...and I use that as a marker(but not the marker) too. My excuse is I'm broke. If I had more disposable income, my CD collection would be epic.

I am all about the experience of the music. That said the Red Hot Chili Peppers' Stadium Arcadium was/is one of the best experiences of my life.

I will agree about the Pepper's new album. At first I didn't like it because it was a bit softer than their old stuff, but it quickly grew on me and I must admit I am a fan.

I don't see how you guys can tolerate RHCP anymore. It's like Dani California = Can't Stop = Give it Away. Everything sounds the same.

I too have been a fan of them for a while, since they released that demo in 2000 as Dragonheart. Its nice to see them getting recognition but I dont really like how they are suddenly the hot thing to be into but what can you do about it? Its funny with all the kids that listen to them think that they are metalheads or something because they have been listening to one metal band for a few months. Hopefully they dont spawn a shitload of copy cat bands now.

Yeah have you checked out his new album? Nagatco Road, I think its called. I really dug it and pretty much had it exclusive in my car for a while. He did come to town here sort of... I got to the venue and the show was cancelled. Waste of all that partying we did before the show. I was pretty bummed was excited about the show for a month up to it.

Is that the new Dr. Octagon album ( i mean "the long awaited follow up") I mean who waited I knew he wasn't gonna make a new one.

I have to disagree. Also, judging an album by its single is not the best thing to do. This last album is like a culmination of everything they’ve done in the past. The album flows so well together, the music itself is great, and the lyrics get better and better. I have become a huge fan of RHCP and was waiting for this last album for a long time, since I read they were starting to make it.

I am not the kind of music aficionado that:
Hates change in a band/group
Hates when bands get popular, just because I listened first
Loves undiscovered music, because its undiscovered

As I said before, music is all about the experience. I don’t appreciate art for art’s sake. If it moves me, or creates an emotion then I’ll explore it more. The RHCP do everything with so much emotion, discipline, and love. It’s hard not to appreciate Stadium Arcadium after you have listened and truly experienced it.

Finally!!! I kept feeling like saying, HEY, doesn't anyone else notice this?? ...and if I mention it, it's like I just said that the Beatles were a bunch of tossers and had no idea on how to write a good song. They're not the second bloody coming, are they, they're the RHCP, get over it. They had their day, they're not doing anything new, have a listen to something else would ya?!?

After reading this, and your mention of the Pixies on the 90s music list thread I'm thinking maybe I should have a listen to The Muse. I know nothing of them, could anyone give me any kind of like minded, or sounding bands?

kenclunk

They had their day, they're not doing anything new,

First off, musically they are. The guitars are insane and although stem from past greats, form their own unique sound. Second, they don’t have to. They build off of the past and create something even better. The combination of the four band members and Rick Rubin producing has created a perfect album. Beginning to end, track to track, it works. If your going to be checking out new music anyhow, I urge you to at least listen to the new album.

Though I just picked it up last night I feel this has the potential for me to be not only the best album of the year, but my favorite album from the artist to date. If you are even remotely a fan then Beck's new album "The Information" is simply amazing. I'm not sure if they all come with or if you have to opt to pick up the one that comes with the DVD, but I would suggest it. The DVD is not like some pack ins that has the 2 or 3 music vids done for the album... it is a video for EVERY song. What an amazing concept. If you pick it up at Target you get a code for a bonus song download or you can prolly just download it from the net as the one you get is all DRM'd (which I already re-encoded to plain jane MP3).

The videos are just plain odd, but it felt like being stoned without touching anything illegal. Consider me bought and sold faster then I remember an album doing since Mike Doughty's Haughty Melodic.

Incidentally, if you'd like the MP3 I made sans DRM just drop me line and it can be arranged.

Are you serious?! Zakk's been remaking the same album for like, 10 years....

I picked up a few "late entries" today. Blood Mountain by Mastodon, The Crusade by Trivium, and Scattering of Ashes by Into Eternity. The only one with a shot at usurping my faves thus far is the Into Eternity disc, but we'll see. Holy shit, do those guys write good music... they added a different vocalist for the growly parts, and the dude can wail Ripper style, too. Needs a few more spins.

As for Blood Mountain and The Crusade... I've never been able to figure out why everyone thinks Mastodon are golden gods of some sort. I've tried listening to them many, many times, I even saw them on the Jaegermeister tour with Killswitch and Slayer, but they just sound like a sludgy, slowed Lamb of God. Not bad, I guess, but not exciting. And The Crusade is, well, disappointing. I don't know why Heafy wants to sound so much like Hetfield, but he does. A lot. And the lyrics are borderline Manowar-cheeseball territory.

Still spinning the Threat Signal, Unearth, and All That Remains discs, though. T minus 7 days until Threat Signal, Mnemic, Darkest Hour, and Soilwork. W00t!

I haven't found anything that has rocked my socks off this year. I enjoyed The Sword- Age of Winter. Mastodon- Blood Mountain was interesting, but it wasn't an album I could listen to over and over. I was let down a bit with Amon Amarth- With Oden On Our Side. Cannibal Corpse's- KILL has been entertaining, but I never listened to them before so that is probably why. 2006 has been thoroughly dissapointing for me.
