I have taken the time to re-purpose an old computer into a server host, (Minecraft/VoiP/Media) and I've had a lot of luck with parts and compatibility. that was untill I realized I now need to see if I can find a 64-bit processor so i can install 64-bit win7.

Side story: Java 7 32-bit wont assign more than 1gb of ram to the VM heap. Only Java 64-bit will let me set 3gb. So i need to install a 64-bit win7 to install Java 64-bit so I can get more memory.

Where can i find a processor upgrade for a Dell gx270, preferably cheep, 64-bit, dual-core, hyperthredded? I don't want to start over because I've gone too far and spent too much money trying this, and the processor is the last hurdle.

I think its socket 478, heck, I'm even getting conflicting reports that I can/can't just install win7 64-bit on the processor right now. Help?

tldr: where can i find a 64-bit processor for a dell gx270(maybe socket 478, cheap, dual core?)

I've been through every processor listed on the Intel website for the 478 and it doesn't look like they made any 64bit till the lga775 chipset. They made 64-bit server chips at that time but but it doesn't look like any 478 had 64-bit instructions. If you want to look yourself.

Sorry couldn't be much help

Nope you're right...no 64bit socket 478...sigh. The comp will make a great media server and podcast editor, but sadly I'm still short a minecraft server(i blame java)
