View Full Version : The Brave & The Bold #1

After reading Batman/Green Lantern and Civil War #7 consecutively my brain began to throb. Good thing I had Illuminati #2 to finish up with or this week would have been a total bust.
It had the feel of a Busiek/Perez Avengers issue. Overplotted, overscripted, and overdrawn. Perez, as usual, is an incredible artist, but I feel his work could use some restraint. Opening up this book was like walking into a tacky, overdecorated house. Perez, along with Byrne, were my two favorite artists growing up. Now both of them leave me cold.
I guess it serves its purpose, but is this what people really wanted out of this book???
In my This Week In Comics thread (http://www.revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?p=66081), I kind of reserved judgement on this book. I didn't get real deep with it so here's deeper:
I feel like this either sucked ass completely or is the beginning of a great book. Next month is GL/Superman, does it continue this story? If so, that may be cool. In #3, does it continue the story but as GL/GA or Superman/WW or something like this? I think there's potential in that. If they're all just throw-away one shots though I'll be out in under 5. I don't want to read another book like that, Perez and Waid or not.

Sorry Fred, next month is GL/SuperGIRL. Yea. Check out next month's cover.
I was pretty disapointed.
**** SuperGirl
is it at least a continuation of the story?

Looks like it.
Hal's "calling in help" in the form of Supergirl, I'd imagine.
The thing is, I don't imagine the stories will go beyond one or two issues. That's the point of The Brave & The Bold - anthology stories about the DCU.
that's cool as long as they finish it
I wasn't crazy about this story but damnit if I'm willing to lose it mid stream

Oh, yeah - that would be pointless and terrible.
isn't anthology greek for 'pointless and terrible'?

Not in my world, but I am in the distinct minority there.
I'm being a smartass, but for me, and I just posted about this in the FF thread, I'd rather solid storylines existed. For instance, JLA's 5 issue team selection thing bores the shit out of me(not that I don't love it). They could actually be forwarding a story rather than stalling.

I look at anthologies as being able to have my cake and eat it too. If I want the long, decades long storylines there are the main books. But sometimes I just want to get in and out in one issue, and that's what I'm looking for from this book.

It's also good for those of us who are relatively new to the DCU to get better aquainted with the characters without the intimidation factor.

I had the same thoughts. Even though I'm not primarily a "DC guy", I was looking forward to this book and thought it had POW potential. I was hoping for done-in-one action/mystery with a couple DC Big Guys, and now I'm not sure if that's we're getting - is it going to be longer arcs with rotating team-ups?
While slightly disappointed (due partly at least to my own expectations), it was far from terrible, but I'm left with some doubt. I'm on board for next month, but bets off after that.
Hmm, I'm surprised by the negativity surrounding this book, I loved it (maybe cause I'd had a few at the time, but still). I felt it moved at a good clip, had a fun interaction between the GL and Bats and had an old school feel.
Still I had just read Civil War, and while I didn't hate it, this felt more like a "superhero" comic

This was actually than I expected it to be, because I did really like the dialogue and interaction between Hal and Batman, but the story blew hard. More random Silver Age like retro storytelling, comeplete with way too much dialogue and exposition and complete throwaway characters. And speaking of throwaway characters, Supergirl in the next issue? Yeah, no. I'll pass...

Actually this book for me a least is my pick of the week. I know the story sucked, I know there are this some iffy things in it but this book can be summed up in one word, fun.
This felt like one of those old Silver age books where the superheroes would somehow team up in a certain way and you would get the brilliant contrast of the characters personalities, Green Lantern and Batman are brilliant characters and have brilliant personalities, it's great to see the dynamics between the two characters come out in this fashion.
It took me back to real old-school era of comic books that I haven't seen a while and it was a tremendous breath of fresh air from civil war. It is just some heroes getting together to stop some bad guys no registration none of that, it was worth it all for the poker scene :) .

Couldn't agree more!

I know nothing of this book, but every time I see the thread on the forum page I keep thinking of that soap The Bold and The Beautiful.
Yeah it is sort of a throwback title, I mean aren't heroes ALL Brave and Bold to some extent?

That's why it works as a descriptor.

Be glad that Ron doesn't get on to the forums too much or you'd be hearing about this comment for awhile

I actually got my money's worth with this. I usually go for a story more than art but there are certain exceptions.. George Perez is that exception. Grant it, I was kind of disappointed when I saw the Supergirl/GL cover.. :(
