Whenever I'm in a rough patch with a significant other, I always turn to my favorite break up songs.
Right now, I'm listening to Man by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs cause I really do have a man that makes me wanna kill.
I also used to listen to Nothing Better by Postal Service cause I swear to God me and my ex had that conversation, minus the rhyme.

I love that song "Band of Gold" because it's all upbeat but it's about a woman who was dumped on her wedding night. How sucky is that!

Misfits - Die, Die, My Darling Lyrics
Die, die, die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty mouth
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing
you in Hell
Don't cry to me oh baby
Your
future's in an oblong box, yeah
Don't cry to me
oh baby
Should have seen it a-coming on
Don't cry
to me oh baby
I don't know it was in your power
Don't cry to me oh baby
Dead-end girl for a dead-end
guy
Don't cry to me oh baby
Now your life drains
on the floor
Don't cry to me oh baby
Die,
die, die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Just shut your pretty mouth
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing
you in Hell
Don't cry to me a baby
Your
future is in an oblong box
Don't cry to me oh baby
Should have seen the end a-coming on, a-coming
Don't
cry to me oh baby
I don't know it was in your power
Don't cry to me oh baby
Dead-end girl for a dead-end
guy
Don't cry to me oh baby
Now your life drains
on the floor
Don't cry to me oh baby
Die,
die, die my darling
Don't utter a single word
Die, die, die my darling
Shut your pretty mouth
I'll be seeing you again
I'll be seeing you in
Hell
Don't cry to me oh baby
Die, die, die
my darling
Don't cry to me oh baby
Die, die, die
my darling
Die, die, die my darling
Die, die, die my
darling
Die, die, die, die, die, die....

GLASSJAW - "Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Silence"
The entire CD screams break-up. The guy just got dumped when they recorded the album, and some songs just have him go into screaming fits.
"Wipe...
Wipe off your mouth.
Get up off your knees and make me your god.
Who could ever,
Who the **** could ever?
It's sexual debauchery you ****ing ****, you ****ing whore,
You cost what you're worth.
Followed by a boy like this,
Reignited by all your visits.
As long as your mouth is shut you'll still be ****in beautiful.
Pack your shit and leave, and take my memories of her with you. [repeat x10]"

Guns N' Roses -Used To Love Her
it always make me think she was not that bad
some Lyrics,
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I used to love her, Oo, yeah
But I had to kill her
I knew I'd miss her
So I had to keep her
She's buried right in my backyard

some lyrics
I'd rather have my blood sucked out by leeches (leeches)
Shove an icepick under a toenail or two

Limp Bizkit's nookie.
For one it will explain to your "significant other" that you did, indeed, do it all for the nookie.
Second, the band and the song are so horrible that after you play it they will never want to have anything to do with you.

Just play "Behind Blue Eyes" for them. Once they hear that speak n spell, they'll never show your face in your town again.

"Am I ever gonna see your face again" - The Angels
No way - get stuffed - **** off
"The Day You Went Away" (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/wendy-matthews-the-day-you-went-away-lyrics.html) - Wendy Matthews
OK, its more about losing someone you love. Very girly. She does a great version in French too. Film clip will get you reaching for a box of tissues.
"I Hope I Never" (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/split-enz-i-hope-i-never-t-finn-4-33-lyrics.html) - Split Enz (the orchestral "Enzso" version is great too).
"That Was My Mistake" is good too.
OK - so they are all Aussie bands (Split Enz are from New Zealand - close enough) ... shoot me. Its great music :p
Not sure if it counts, but "Man of Colours" by Icehouse (yeah, another Aussie band) is the one CD I own that has painful memories for me due to a breakup. I had it on repeat for about a month. Love the CD, but it still leaves me feeling depressed 20 years, and several gf (and one marriage) later.

My funny valentine isn't a break up song. It's a dark love song. Such Great Heights isn't a break up song either. Dude, none of your songs are break up songs! Last Kiss the girl dies!!!
But speaking of Jack Johnson, Cocoon is a great one. It seems like a love song at first, but listening to the lyrics you realize it's a break up song.

The Gloria Gaynor original as the best break up song? Could at least gone for a different version such as REM (http://www.ezarchive.com/wotan/AlbumSpace/24A75OCMW6/_zid-846449/_open-/00_-_REM_-_I_Will_Survive.mp3;file=/00_-_REM_-_I_Will_Survive.mp3) or Cake. Yeah, but when the guy you're trying to get over was also a big Ben Folds who put just about everything by BF abd BF5 on your iPod, this just hurts. Ani diFranco was good too for getting over someone else, but said-ex and I listened to it a lot together.
*begin *****ing*
He seems to have made it his mission to make my life miserable. Seriously, last night he told me in a messege that I deserve to be in hell. His attempts at making my life unbearable kicked up after he saw me at the ren faire on Sunday with another guy.
We broke up months ago after he somehow managed to blame me for problems he has had with his father that started 21 years ago, 20 years before he and I met. Last night he again accused me of being the cause. He keeps putting mutual friends in the middle, trying to get me banned from forums (he got me kicked off a poetry forum just this morning), etc.. He's like one of those stalkery-gonna-make-you-life-hell guys. And to think, until this morning, I've been defending him.
*end *****ing*
I keep playing Bon Jovi. Something about Bon Jovi is relaxing. I open the sun roof of my BMW, down with the windows, blare Bon Jovi, especially "Living on a Prayer," and drive 100mph up 280 to the beach.

I fell for that line. Almost. More like I hadn't had any play since my most recent ex and I broke up, so called up my ex before that and seduced him. Since he said he hadn't had any since we broke up, which he was so trigger-happy I believe him, that made for an awkward night.

AW HELL YEAH! That was my FIRST breakup song...the RBF one. It's what I thought after my first "real" gf ever dumped me through one of my best friends, Johnson, at the time by making HIM tell me. (7th grade). We had talked every single day over the summer, forEVER (Goldfinger-Hang Ups also came out that summer...chockfull of great break up songs, still reminds me of her...), still my longest convo ever: 7 hours. Crazy. Anyway, she said (technically, my friend Johnson said that...) she wasn't ready for a relationship, etc. During that same recess, she was all snuggly with another guy who was also supposedly one of my best friends at the time. We were all in the same group etc., so for the rest of the year (they stayed together for a whiiile), I had to watch them make out and snuggle and make sounds during sleepovers, etc.
That RBF song was my anthem then. **** That ****ing *****.

Not exactly relevant but I went to a BBQ last year in Adelaide (Australia), and my friend introduces me to this guy.
Guy: "Hey I'm Ben."
Me: "Hey Ben I'm Liam, so how do you know Da... WTF YOUR BEN FOLDS!"
And that’s the story of how I met Ben Folds. Apparently Ben Lee was also there but he left before I arrived.

To keep this on topic, my new favorite "Call me when you're sober" by Evanescence is pretty good.
Yeah, I was about to suggest that one too. I can't believe no one has mentioned "You Oughta Know" yet.
Mary Prankster has some great break up songs too.

I dont really know how i forgot about it but the definite break up song is of course "Love will tear us apart". Best version is in my opinion made by either Honeyroot or Red House Painters, or maybe the orignial.
