so do you care about the oscars? has anyone actually seen the movies that are nominated?
personally i usually get on the boat late on these oscar flicks and i watch them on dvd.
anyone got any predictions?
the only movie i saw in the best picture category is little miss sunshine and i didn't think it was oscar worthy (not a bad movie but not a great one either)

I'm not heavily invested in this year's Oscars. Haven't really seen that many of the movies. But I am a big fan of Forest Whitaker, so I hope he wins Best Actor. Loved him in the Shield last season. Awesome performance.

Others I'd like to see win:

Eddie Murphy - Best Supporting Actor
Helen Mirren - Best Actress
Jennifer Hudson - Best Supporting Actress
"An Inconvenient Truth" - Best Documentary (Go Al Gore!)
“Borat Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan” - Adapted Screenplay

i'd love to see Gore win, I'd say that with all the global warming talk in the media these days, he's almost a lock
plus that movie was awesome!

"An Inconvenient Truth" was awesome - and a little bit frightening. Global warming deserves much more attention than it is getting. Maybe if this wins the Oscar, it will help the debate.

I care, but only in the way that me and my friends make a betting game out of it.

Like say for best picture, the front runner is Departed, so if you put money on it, you get the pot, but you only put in like five bucks since it's the favorite to win. Little miss Sunshine is the black horse, but could be the surprise, so you put in eight bucks, if you vote for any of the other ones, you put in ten bucks (Queen, Letters) and you win big there if any of those win.

It's fun and mkaes the time go faster, and makes it easier to watch, because at times, those Oscars...woosh!

I'm hoping for Pan's Labyrinth to sweep all the awards it nominated for, because it was glorius.

Same for Children of Men in Cinematography

My jaw was on the floor for that CoM long shot. It's incredible when they can get that to work, and that has to be the most complicated shot, especially with the need for characters to hit their marks, all the explosions, indoor and outdoor lighting...

For that segment alone I'd place on a higher pedestal than The Departed. That kind of visceral reaction deserves some gold.

How does CoM compare o te book (which I'm currently reading before seeing the movie...yup I'm one of those.)

Oddly I've heard the movie is better than the book (which I have not read). The movie drops the "antagonist" character, and I hear that the ending is entirely different. But from the description of the book, it sounds like the changes were very smart choices. I've read that many people who have read the book thought it lost its footing towards the end, that the story shifted to the point where it felt like an entirely different book.

I went to an event today, a marathon where all the Best Picture nominees were shown in a row. In addition to gaining an aching ass, I am left with the opinion that The Departed or The Queen had better win, and Babel had no business being nominated.

I care, but unlike most years, I only saw 3/5ths of the best pic noms instead of all. Never got to see Last King of Scotland either, and that's been high on my list since I saw a preview for it back in August of last year. I'm not too invested in this year though, except by god al****ingmighty, Scorcese better finally get his Oscar. That picture was easily the best flick of the past year, and the man has obviously paid his dues. Just... for ****'s sakes...

Sounds good.

The big categories for me are original and adapted screenplay. Originally, I was rooting for Little Miss Sunshine, but having picked up the newmarket script, there's a noticeable disconnect between script and movie. I think the actors and directors did a lot to improve upon what was on the page. That scene between Olive and Grandpa in the hotel room? That's all Arkin. You're not gonna find that written down anywhere. So, maybe Pan's Labyrinth for that one?
