No wonder DC is putting out another weekly comic - 52 was four out of the top thirteen comics, selling just under 400,000 comics in January.

Graphic Novels Outsell Comics
Sales Hit All Time High
February 23, 2007

An ICv2 Release. Pop culture trend tracker ICv2 released its latest size estimates for the comic and graphic novel markets at the ICv2 Graphic Novel Conference at New York Comic Con on Thursday, and revealed that graphic novels now outsell the traditional comic periodical format. "Based on our latest analysis, graphic novels passed comic periodicals in 2005 and held that lead in 2006," ICv2 President Milton Griepp said at the Conference.

According to the ICv2 White Paper presented at the Conference, graphic novel sales through retail stores in the U.S. and Canada were around $330 million at retail last year, compared to $310 million in sales of comic periodicals. This is the first time since the origination of the comics medium that book format comics have outsold traditional comic books. The $640 million total also represents the highest sales for the comic and graphic novel market since the early 90s.

A number of factors contributed to that trend, according to Griepp, including the rapid growth of manga (Japanese comics translated into English), the increasing numbers of female readers, greater acceptance of graphic novels as literature, and the growing TV and movie exposure of graphic novel material.

Libraries and schools are also getting in on the trend, capitalizing on the increasing popularity of graphic novels among young readers.

"It's a great time for fans of the comics medium," said Griepp. "There's a wider range of material, of higher quality, than at any time in the last 50 years."

I think more people are reading DMZ in trade format instead of issue form which could be a bad thing.

Not gonna lie I'm a Trade format person.

Yeah, but that proves that the comic industry is so insular that a solicit change can put your sales in the gutter. Not attracting casual readers AT ALL.

I fear for us all. Well, not for you and me Fred, but for the other people.

the 6 books I listed are in my top 15 or 20 every month and nobody reads them. Shows why it's impossible to find nightly news

My LCS doesn't carry indies. I would never have known about The Nightly News if not for iFanboy and the forum. I had to go to another shop to find it. Worth it though.

I read three of those books, all in trade format. I suspect more people read them in trade than in issue.

Has anyone actually found Moon Knight tolerable? I'm actually a fan of the character for no good reason, but the 3 issues I've picked up since I've been back have not been good at all.

I'm a huge Moon Knight fan. The Moench/Seinkiewicz issues are brilliant and the character deserves so much better than what he's getting. Maybe it's the art??? This series doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Yes, I'm still buying it...

it reads much better in chunks. it never comes out so that takes away from the enjoyability of it

I for once managed to stay strong and drop it...

I find that I'm able to drop the bad comics a lot easier this time around the comic carousel than in the past.

Could be maturity, or it could just be saving the money to feed and clothe my son.
