View Full Version : Why Oilers WHY?

The Oilers traded away their franchise player Ryan Smyth. This is hard to believe. While he was hit with injuries about half way through the season he has a point in every game so far this year and a scoring percentage of .56/game. In other words, he can play offense. His defense is kind of week, but still, he's been with the team for 13 years.

It sounds like though, he wasn't going to take a slightly lower paycheck (rumors are the discrepancy was over 2-300,000) to stay in Edmonton, even though he's all about the city and the team.

It's hard to take as an Oilers fan. I know this may be a bit of a vanity post since hockey fans online are few and far between in the geek realm, but damn! This is a team that had a 30% chance of seeing the playoffs this year and now they've traded it away. And for 2 no-names and a draft pick. ****!

He's a stud for sure. But, if you can't sign him, you've gotta get something for him.

As much as I want to... I can whine and ***** but I can't defend him too much. He really was the 5 feet in front of the net guy. He lacked a lot of D and physical play. He will be missed for sure, we didn't get a fair trade but I hope that he comes back and is in Rhode Island as a rental.

Edit: I stand corrected, the guy is vital. As of writing, going into the third, the Oil are down 3-0 to PHOENIX! PHOENIX! The perpetual bottom dwellers! ****!

Yeah, and Zito went not only to another team other than the A's (I know, Oilers + football, A's = baseball), but he went to their #1 rival. That's worse.

He'll likely go back in the off-season. So effectively, NYI gets nothing and Edmonton grabbed a couple players for nothing. Certainly hurts their chances, this year, though.

I've heard a few different commentators stating that but I'm not so sure. I know he's over in Rhode Island as a rental but where he goes when his contract is up July 1 is another matter. That loss to Phoenix was embarrassing! We need talent, not some no-names!

From what I understand, he wanted to resign in Edmonton, but they simply couldn't get it done because of lack of cap space. Now that he's smelled fresh air, who knows what he'll do, but I won't be surprised at all to see his ugly mug back up North next year. ;)
