Alright, so i've run into a pretty strange problem and have been asking for help on this other forum (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/548405-windows-updates.html), but have not gotten any responses, so i figured i'd try here and see if anyone can tell me anything. As things stand, i've exhausted all the ideas i have been able to come up with myself, and those that friends came up with too, all to no avail.

Here is a copy & paste of what i wrote in the other message board so you don't need to click on the link to see the story:

In trying to update the firmware on my Zune the other day, i realized a larger problem: I cannot update windows, even once i turned the service back on via msconfig (where i had turned it off some time ago). I normally turn it on once a month or so, grab all the updates, and turn it back off. But, on the phone with tech support with the zune folks last night, they asked me to update WMP10 to WMP11... then i discovered this problem.

I have rebooted my computer after enabling all of the services i had previously disabled, and then set automatic updates to download and ask me when to install. That was working fine, until about 35%, when suddenly the yellow shield disappeared, and i can't get it back now. Update: i've restarted several times, and the update never gets past 40% before disappearing.

Also, for some reason Internet Explorer 7 can't access the Internet -- at all. I'm writing this in Firefox, which has had absolutely no problems with the internet -- and the IE7 problem also means that i cannot update via the windows update website because FF lacks active-x support. Also, my two flat mates (on the same network) have had absolutely no problems updating their computers.

Any ideas, thoughts, or recommendations?

Cheers

Edit: oh, and this is Windows XP Pro with service pack 2 installed, running on a 32-bit Dell laptop

Edit #2: Also, when i open IE7 it tries to connect to 212.138.64.148 (http://ip-lookup.net/whois-ip?ip=212.138.64.148), which is making me curious if i've been hijacked? Thoughts anyone?

Edit #3: I have now run an Trend Micro "housecall", which did not discover any viruses etc, a full system AVG, and a full system Kaskpersky AV scan (both of which were as up to date as possible) and found no problems... yet Internet Explorer still refuses to work. When i click "windows update" in the start menu, Kaspersky warns me of C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe and says that "attempt to run browser with command line parameters." The details of those parameters are: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" -Embedding.
