Here’s where you can shamefully confess what you have never read, despite the fact that you call yourself a comic fan.

For me:
-Watchmen
-Preacher
-Any Superman comic
-Infinite Crisis
-Dark Phoenix Saga

Sandman

To name two.

Watchmen
Sandman (well, I have a couple of issues)
Preacher
Crisis

I want to read these, just haven't made it around to a couple and I am fairly sure that I'll detest at least one of them despite the praise on them.

I've read Superman comics Kwok, but rarely good ones.

Well, I read several volumes of Sandman, Preacher, 100 Bullets, Transmetropolitan and others and lost interest or didn't care for them.

I don't feel ashamed about it though. I gave them a shot. Wasn't for me.

True, THe Invisible's is good too, though it runs out of steam near the end, the beginning is great however, It left me unsatisfied.

i think 100 bullets is overrated, i have the first 4 trades and then lost interest, i didn't like the writing style or the art, and the way the story was moving didn't interest me

We have to be careful talking about ALPHA FLIGHT in the thread of shame, people might get the wrong idea.

We should talk about it in the thread of awesomeness!!!

I really don't like the term "overrated." It implies that people who rate it highly are somehow being disingenuous. That it's only esteemed because of hype or reputation or some non-story related reason. I like to assume good faith. A lot of people like it. I didn't. That's all that needs to be said.

This topic has been on my mind, as I just finally started Y: The Last Man - and when I set out that day, it was to get Preacher Vol. 2, but made a game-time decision. I've since torn through Y vol. 1 and already bought vol. 2. And so here's my remaining list of Books I'm Always Saying I'll Get To (in some kinda order of most shameful):

Sleeper
From Hell
Preacher
Powers
Invincible

i agree with that, i dont mean any negativity when i use the term overrated, i just didn't enjoy the book and in my opinion it wasn't worth the praise it got, but people can enjoy whatever they want...

Powers is up there. i think its one of the best comics being published right now. the freedom bendis has with these characters is its strength, he can go in any direction, and in the past year, he has.

This is really what I love about indy comics, in general. With Powers, when Bendis puts characters in jeopardy, there's real tension. With Marvel and DC, when a comic ends with a cliffhanger where the main character is in mortal danger, there's no real tension. We all know that he's going to escape or be resurected or whatever. But if Bendis (or whoever) wants to kill their own character in the interest of a good story, he can. And does.

This is also true, to a lesser extent for comics on the fringe of continuity (Runaways, Alias, Livewires, Manhunter) and out of continuity comics (DKR, Superman: Secret Identity, Red Son, etc.).

Maus - have it, will read it
Transmetropolitan - have some trades, will read it... eventually
Bone - have it, will read it
Marvels - have it, will read it
The Dark Phoenix Saga - have it, will read it
From Hell - don't have it, will read it one day

I'd have to look at my trade collection to see what else I still have to read. There's lots.

Right, I'm slogging through Preacher (on the 7th trade). I think next on my to read trades list is Marvels and Bone.

I'm surprised at the amount of peopel that haven't read DKR or Watchmen. Not so surprised at the amount of people who haven't read Sandman, though...

its that level of uncertainty that adds to the read. your never sure whats gonna happen. its a completely different style of comic reading since it doesn't have the security of the major companies titles. course on the other hand, the writer do have to work harder in order for the death to resonate with the reader. we have to care for this character that we might not now as well as say, Spider-man.

Oh, one more book i haven't read is Bone. but i have the one volume edition on my amazon wish list and i'll get to it eventually. that wish list just gets longer and longer with the more time i spend on this forum. Thanks guys, that just what i need... to spend MORE money on comics

I have as much, if not more history with the Powers characters (it was my first comic) than I do with Spider-man, so it's really all plusses for me.

Something that I've purchased but not yet read is Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland. I'm looking forward to sitting down with it soon, though. The art is wonderful.

Honestly, you could start anywhere. There's no required continuity between volumes. For a big story, I would recommend the Confessions tpb (v.2). For one of the short story collections, I'd say it's a push between Life in the Big City and Family Album.

I don't see how so many of you have not read 'Dark Knight Returns.' I mean thats like being a dirver and never reading a stop sign.

I bought the hard bound version and never regretted it.

Its the best Superhero comic ever written, bar none.

dude, you need them all and V and from hell probably

The main reason I haven't bought those bat-books is because I know DC will put them all out in Absolute Editions, so i don't wanna have to buy 'em twice, y'know? I know either Long Halloween or Dark Victory are coming out in an Absolute edition soon, so I'll get that one then.

As for V, soo enough, young padawn. And From Hell is just too effing long...maybe if I take a week off work I'll breeze through it. ;-)

And last but not lease, Strange Girl is in fact on the way, should be here in (probablly) 2 weeks.

Two I forgot to add to the list:

Alias (still can't find an even relatively cheap copy)
&
those old Dennis O'Neil Green Lantern/Green Arrow stoires. IE. - this (http://www.amazon.com/Green-Lantern-Arrow-Collection/dp/1563896397/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2/103-1173790-9872643?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1173236088&sr=8-2)

there are three morrison animal man trades, i have the last 2 and i think the only one that is really groundbreaking is the final of the three. it has a moment i've never seen in any other comic before it. besides that i dont think you really need to read the first 2, if your tight on cash i'd skip it in favor of the last, you'll get by just fine ;)

Right now I would say the only truly "essential" stuff that I've missed out on has been:

Strangers in Paradise (though, I'm waiting on the series to end and the last pocketbook to come out so I can buy it all at once).
Queen and Country
Cerebus
Gaiman's contribution to Miracleman (I've more or less read Moore's via the internets. **** you McFarlane)
Charles Burn's Black Hole
Mark Waid's Flash run

And I'm sorely lacking in R. Crumb stuff and have really only read about half of Tomine's Optic Nerve books. And there's a couple of Joe Kubert's books like Yosel that I need to pick up too.

Other than that, I think I'm pretty damn well read.

Heh. It happens. I quit for about four years, and when I got back into them, I didn't realize how many good books were actually going on when I quit in the first place. Now I'm at, uh 450 some TPB and Graphic Novels and still have a bit of "classic" runs to catch up on.

Good luck with all that.
