KDE's one of many desktop enviroments, it's got a ton of stuff in there, which is great if your new. But it's also considered to be incredibly bloated because it has so much unnecessary stuff.

Some other desktop enviroments/window managers to check out are Xfce, Gnome, Blackbox/Fluxbox, and E-17.

Mepis is a distro of linux, it's one of the simpler one's so it's good to start off with.

I used and recommended Simply MEPIS about a year ago... It was the only distro when I started out that auto-configed my soundcard properly. Since, I've learned to get my soundcard working on any distro.

MEPIS is a great starter Linux. It comes with my favourite choices for software (last I checked)

MEPIS also uses KDE which I like (that's because I have 1GB ram on an AMD 3700+ @ 2.65 GHz) People think it looks childish and some say its very resource hungry, however a lot is integrated and its really well done.

Installing it can be a pain, since it loads a LiveCD style environment that can sometimes be really slow -- my friends have found. However, that's the route popular distros like Ubuntu (even Gentoo is trying) have taken.

Just because a distro doesnt install via GUI doesnt make it any less 'proper' - Gentoo 2006.1 via Command line is still WAY more powerful and configurable then 2006.1 via GUI. IMO, GUI installations can only hurt *nix.

Sup,
Tried MEPIS on new hardware, works great out of the box. Had problems with legacy hardware, but this could be due to lack of drivers'.
