I was watching Medium with my wife last night. One of the characters was a comic fan. He talked about going to conventions, reading graphic novels, the genius of Frank Miller... I thought, hey, we're breaking into the mainstream. But then he turned out to be a serial rapist and murderer. So much for the positive public perception of fanboys.

I don't think you're going to see a comic fan on TV who's not an archetypicial nerd or some sort of creepy stalker/killer type any time soon.

In addition to the rapes and murder, he also killed his neighbor's cat and then committed suicide. Real well-rounded kind of guy.

...he also killed his neighbor's cat ...

At least he wasn't totally evil.

I wouldn't say that all TV representations are negative, but I would say that liking comic books is something that characters are generally supposed to rise above, not embrace if they are to be redeemed.

I would say that's mostly true of movies, too. I mean, the 40 Year Old Virgin was a great movie and Steve Carrell's character was an ubergeek and also very likeable, but a big part of the movie was letting go of a lot of that fanboy stuff (although not completely), which I think is as it should be.

The OC kid wasn't too bad. But he was a kid.

As a loyal OC watcher for the entire run of the show, they represented comics in a very positive light, as well as Seth as a comics fan. Hell they made Ryan a fan of Legion - I don't think there was much "oh he's just a kid" dismissing of it though - it was ever-present as it is for us I would think...

Man that show also skyrocketed indie rock into the mainstream for a while too. Death cab anyone?

This thread is a lot about what brought me to iFanboy, and not other discussion forums. I love comics, I am American, I work with non American expats in Japan, I live in Japan, speak fluent Japanese and have Japanese friends, I am a political junkie on the left but appreciate thoughtful conservatives and independents, artists who don't read comics, and yes, I am a little "queer"... and every one of those groups I move in have something negative or derogatory about one of the others based on nothing but misinformation, tired stereotypes, and it's oh so tiresome, which is why I love this forum. Just take all those groups in every concievable combination commenting on one of the others, and its just the same old tired jokes and stereotypes and it's "not my thing because....well, just because it's (regurgitated stereotype of something heard somewhere else)."

This forum continually rises above. And comis is FANTASTIC as a medium at addressing every single group and/or issue I mention above, with something for everybody. And iFanboy and the community, by and for readers and fanboys, just holds the medium up to high standards by people who know what the heck they are talking about, all tired stereotypes aside.

Bravo.

Somewhere, there's a cat-killing rapist/murderer forum bemoaning that they're always portrayed on TV as comic book readers.
