It has to be Captain America #25. Unfortunately, my copy had the forgettable cover of Captain America running with his shield. But the other cover is absolutely riveting. His gloved hand, handcuffed, lying in blood and the day's newspapers. Tragically conveys the pathos of the narrative inside.

I also liked the cover of Civil War: The Initiative with Iron Man standing there holding Cap's shield against the backdrop of an American flag. The art is so well done.

The Variant Cover of Dark Tower 2 (which I didn't buy, but still marveled at in the store). I really wish I could find a link to it, but I can't. Basically it was roland in front of a "vanishing" Dark Tower, amazing pencils

Nah. I finished my stack last night, Criminal and Welcome to Tranquility were better reads easily, and I think Tranq had the best cover. More subtle and a little bit more "artistic".

I also read Criminal and while it was good, for me, it was nowhere near as good as Captain America.

I think the Captain America cover is best compared with the Death of Superman cover -- and the Cap cover wins in that comparison hands down. I even got the sense that in "Identity Crisis" the funeral scene was almost a little bit of a spoof of the "Death of Superman" cover, in that it was the gathering of the heros in full costume at the funeral, but with pathos.
The Cap cover, even though I am not a CW reader (nor do I care much) is really an excellent treatment of a very sensationalistic "event," which could have been done much worse; in fact the whole "event" nature of it almost begged for a sensationalistic crap cover, so kudos to the cover artist for going a different way.
I do have to say though that the cover didn't really 'happen' in the book

But it was evocative of what happened in the book.

Eh to each their own I guess. Cap had a logistics fallacy that I couldn't overlook and the heavy handed forboding via those flashbacks was too much for me. Even if this book had been solicited as just another book I would have known within the first five pages what was really going down. The shock twist at the end is all that would have saved it. I didn't think it was better than a 8/10 while Criminal and Tranq were both 9's (which is as good as I rate pretty much because I give perfect 10's maybe twice a year).
