They're the unsung heroes of the industry, the guys giving our comics the last artistic touch before going to press.
So who's your favorite colorist, do you like a more classic style, or do you prefer the newer, (Morry Holloway) photorealistic coloring (in fact, are there any other colorist at all like Holloway?)
Discuss....

Morry Hollowell? I usually pay attention to this kind of thing but i have no idea what he's done besides some of Civil War. I feel dumb.
I think Laura Martin and Dave Stewart are the best in the biz right now, but I'm also loving whoever's doing the coloring in All Star Superman, Jamie Grant, i think.

to tell you the truth i dont take note of the names of colourists (or inkers for that matter, another group of unsung heroes) but i can tell you the books inwhich the colouring work really stood out. civil war is the first one that comes to mind. having recently read 300, the colours really help sell the story in that as well. i also really like the colouring in ultimate spider-man. its funny how bright colours can work so well in some books but not in others. i can't see the colours in USM working in 300. the last one i can think of would be the colours in any Jim Lee book (i dunno if he uses the same guy) but i also think he benefits heavily from his inker as well. i recently looked over some of my old x-men books and lee definitely works better with his current team rather than the one used in x-men.

The coloring in Captain America has been brilliant. Dark hues - totally unexpected on a book like that and a tremendous artistic choice and achievement.

He did New Avengers with Mcniven and a few of the covers/interiors for some Civil War tie-ins. I love his work though!

he is someone who definitely excells on that book. the colouring really gives that book a whole noir/expionage feel and i dont think i'd be as impressed with the art if it weren't for the colour. i always noticed it while reading the book but never really gave it any thought until this weeks podcast when you guys were talking about him. great choice!

Yeah, he also makes Micheal Lark's pencils and inks on Daredevil look amazing. Much, much better than Noelle Giddings' did with Gotham Central.
the guy from DD and CA is good

I have a confession - I never notice colorists and cannot name any.
I primarily notice them when they're great or awful

I once knew a colorist in my past life... That's all I'm gonna say about that...
I like the colorists for Spider Man Loves Mary Jane (Christina Strain), Daredevil (Matt Hollingsworth), Welcome to Tranquility (Carrie Strachan) and Shazam! The Monster Society of Evil (Steve Hamaker) . Dave Mccaig (Superman:Birthright) is pretty good too..

Matt Hollingsworth right now doing DD and Iron Fist. Laura Depuy is another one of my faves.

I was thinking about this following Sunday's podcast. I confess I was really turned off when I began reading Brubaker's Cap, specifically by the muddy murk-- "I remember when superhero comics used to be printed in color," I said to no one in particular-- but I have belatedly come around on this one. It totally fits the tone of the book and the style of the writing. I can't imagine it any other way now.

Before she went to digital, Lynn Varley, Frank Miller's wife and colorist, made his work shine. The coloring in 300 is every bit as important as the rest of the book, and you can see how much of that style was used in the film. Same goes for the Dark Knight Returns.
Following the same vein, Laura Allred, Mike Allred's wife is fantastic as well. Check out her work in the issue of Fables Allred recently drew.
Not sure of his name, but the colorist for Powers is amazingly good. Pete Pantazis I think. I'm not sure he's still on the book, but that is one well done book.
Can't forget Dave Stewart on New Frontier either.

Oh, oh. JD Mettler's coloring on Ex Machina too. Works so well with Tony Harris' stuff.
