Buffy Season 8

Buffy #1 is finally out. What did the Buffy fans think? What about the two of you who's never seen an episode before? Where are the vampires? Why is Nick Fury here?
Issue one was pretty good. I'm not sure how this would read to anyone jumping in, but as a big fan of the show, i thought this did a good job of reintroducing the characters and setting up the Buffyverse post series finale. The art was good (who is this Jeantys' guy?), succeeding in the difficult job of making the characters recognizable without looking like straight up photo references. The characterization was perfect (duh), though reading the lines instead of hearing them was a bit jarring for me at first. The last page was quite a surprise, and i'm curious to see who that trench coat guy floating above the castle was. Again, this issue was largely set up but I expect everything to pick up come next month.
What did you guys think?

i didn't buy it but-
QUESTION 1: can i read it if i stopped watching Buffy after they graduated high school
QUESTION 2: is it good enough that i shouldn't wait for the trade?

**Television Series Spoilers***
1: Based on this first issue, you can probably get by as long as you know two basic things about the series finale: (A) Sunnydale got completely obliterated and is now a huge crater (B) There are now hundreds of slayers around the world working for Buffy
2: I really enjoyed this issue, but it was mostly set up, so I can't say just how good the series will be. It definitely has potential though.

Pretty good start for Buffy but it's definitely a catch-up/setup issue. Without giving too much away- I liked that Whedon followed the series characters to their logical ends. The great thing about Buffy as a television show is that stuff happened and it mattered. One would think fighting ancient demons and vampires would change one's perspective on things, right?
Didn't care for the art all that much. The whole Slayer Tac team thing was cool though. And I totally forgot Xander had his eye ripped out by Malcolm (heh).

being one of the two who didn't watch the show( i like the movie) i won't be picking it up. but i do think it is neat to continue the story this way

I never watched the 7th season, so this was a huge amount of catching up. I loved seeing Xander as Nick Fury, and I guess I'll have to Wiki to find out why Dawn is huge and why there are tons of slayers. But otherwise, it read like an episode of Buffy, which is a huge complement since I fell in love with the show from the first.
The art feels dead on for Buffy, and of course Whedon translates the voices pretty flawlessly. I actually think the comic achieves things that the TV show never could have with its use of internal dialogue. The part with Buffy walking around in the middle of the book thinking to herself was probably the highlight of the issue.
I'm sure I wouldn't have gotten as much if I never saw the show, but I feel like Buffy's taking such a drastic change that it may be a great jumping on point for potential readers.

I am so glad to hear someone else admit that they like the movie.
There have been so many times when I would get the question, 'What are your 10 favorite movies?' I start to answer the same way as always, 'The Matrix, Se7en, Silence of the Lambs, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Natural....' And like always, they stop me and say, 'Buffy? Wasn't that that shitty movie with Dillion from 90210?' Then, like always, there is a huge bar fight ending with me on the curb yelling 'Pike isn't a name, it's a fish! F#@kers!'
Anyway, Buffy Season 8 #1.....good stuff.

As for the Buffy Book, I think you can jump on without having watched the show but it will cause you to miss some of the little details that make fans geek out...

This particular development is new. It happened between show and comic and this is our formal introduction to it.
Loved that two page reveal (only wish I hadn't seen it in a preview already).
I'm stoked. I'm a huge Buffy fan, and I can't wait to see this thing develop. It's never gonna be the show, but that was lightning in a bottle anway. Still, I'm looking forward to the further adventures of the Scooby gang.
Not my pick of the week (as mentioned above, it's a lot of establishing material at this point) but I anticipate it being the best book in the stack several times in the months to come.

I saw that same preview, and now i think i'm determined to try to avoid any spoilers whatsoever. Even the solicitations for #2 gave away a lot of story points from this first ish. my fault i guess.

well that's good but i want to make this clear........i didn't like the show. i liked the movie. i found the plot just too silly to take serious. sorry
but i still think the idea of the comic is neat. they should the same thing with knightrider and alf.
I would totally buy Alf comics. And the series was silly on purpose(I hope)

The series was equal parts silliness and seriousness. An episode could range from incredibly absurd to incredibly poignant, or even both. That was its charm.
I thought there were Alf comics...

on the subjest of ALF, have you read Permanent Midnight by Jerry Stahl? He was a staff writer for ALF and a heroin junkie. It is a great book that was turned into a terrible movie with Ben Stiller.

Reading this book was like seeing an old friend for the first time in years, and then having all the years melt away. I'm busting out my DVDs as we speak.
(I'm pretty sure Monday was the 10th anniversary of the show's premiere, by the way. You're old.)

Always try to avoid spoilers for the books I'm really looking forward to. I try not to ruin it for other people who may not have read an issue as well. Why would you want a book spoiled? Kinda takes the fun out of putting a character in harms way.
I would totally buy Alf comics.
Wait a minute, you had your chance. I remember ALF #1 going for $15 at my LCS. WHere were you then? CAUSE IT GOT CANCELLED!!
My heart was broken, I should've cashed in on the spec market, if only E-bay had existed.

I can see that happening with season 1 and a handful of filler episodes in other seasons, but overall I think it strikes a good balance. It is a show about a girl in California killing vampires , so taking it too seriously was never really an issue for me. It was a lot of fun, and it would often surprise you with some really powerful storytelling.
I remember the Alf comics too. Alf is kind of hard to draw.
I remember the Alf cartoon but missed the Alf comic. Shame on me. I remember liking the cartoon.
Anybody remember the Punky Brewster cartoon where they gave her a magical backpack pet named Glomer?
