View Full Version : Fred's This Week in Comics 3/14/2007
Well this was certainly an odd week. I tried something new this week. I tried to read all of my books in order of expectation from lowest to highest. I won't ever do that again. My lord it was difficult to read all that shit in a row. My pick of the week was easy to make. It was The Confession by Bendis and Maleev. Nobody would've called that one. Let's get to it.
Marvel
Marvel had a ****ed up week where they showed me just how good and how bad they could be at the same time. There were 3 Fs and a D in the 7 books I got from Marvel. The pick of the week came from Marvel. They still managed only a C- average.
The Confession - I really wish that Bendis wrote Civil War. I have to describe this in two parts as it was written in two.
In the first story, I finally began to understand Tony Stark's side. I don't agree with him on any level, but I do get it I guess. That's how well Bendis did it. This half ends with Tony admitting that it wasn't worth it. I not only understood that, but I even admired him on some level for admitting it. He admitted it to the corpse of a friend and a hero, but he admitted it.
In the second story, Bendis erased all the Tony good will that I'd developed in the first. Oh, that tricky Bendis! Cap quoted Twain for the second time. Damn if Steve Rogers didn't love Mark Twain. Both JMS and Bendis have found spectacularly fitting quotes from him. I was practically pumping my fist in the air and screaming in the interchange that followed. And then Cap admitted he lost after Tony leaves. It was sad.
The art in this book was amazing. Maleev does it again. I love his work. I only wish that there were more of it. Bendis and Maleev do it again. A+
One thing on The Confession: Did anyone else notice the Old Spice ad (see below) on the back page? Was that a bit suggestive or is it just me?
Spider-Man Reign #4 - This was really good. It was a fitting conclusion to a great mini. I liked the messages of hope and perseverance. I liked that the Sandman helped Peter end the rule of the Reign. I also liked that Jonah went right back to being a bloviating douchebag when it all ended.
The art was really cool. Also, surprisingly very little old man sack in this one. A
New Avengers #28 - I liked this a lot. The story was great. It had enough of the Bendis witty banter. It confirmed Quesada's statements that Cap is dead and that Ms. Marvel was lying to Spider-Woman. It also had some great Luke Cage/Wolverine scenes that I loved.
If I'm going to be honest though, I hate the art. I'm not sure if it's the pencils or the coloring but it's just not good. It's too rough and unfinished. It looks like someone quickly sketched the book while they were sitting at a table in artist alley or something. Bleh. B-
Moon Knight #8 - Yes, I know it's my own fault for buying it. This book sucks. I take back every back-handed compliment that I ever gave it. While reading it, I considered flinging myself off of a bridge, you know - cause it would suck less. Consider yourself dropped beeyotch.
What are the problems?
1) It never comes out. I can't remember the goddamn story. That certainly doesn't help.
2) The art is good but not worth waiting for
3) Huston's dialogue can be most kindly described as terrifyingly bad
4) Little brother syndrome - Much like Ghost Rider and Blade, Marvel will tack any mother****ing banner on this book that they can to sell it and then just jam it into the story in ways that are unimportant or make no sense.
What's wrong with this one?
1) Cap's characterization. I would suspect that Charlie Huston has never read anything else with Captain America in it. He comes off as a douche
2) This book takes place before Civil War 6 and 7. What? Didn't Civil War 6 come out like 3 years ago? Exagerration? never.
3) I was so lost and irritated that I didn't even read more than the first 3 lines of any of the word balloons after the midway point in the book
I literally threw it when I finished it. F
Wolverine Origins #12 - Well, it's been a month since the last one and I still can't think of a way to describe this book that doesn't involve the phrase 'fu*king c**ksucking horseshit'. I'll keep trying. F
Thunderbolts #112 - The journey I've taken with this book in 3 issues has been strange. I loved #110. I really loved it. It was great. I gushed about it. I was into #111 but still a bit disappointed after the previous one. This issue, #112, was really bad. The art was a bit better than it was in #111. I'll give them that.
This issue was over the top. It was WAY over the top. It's like Ellis heard the praise for the first one and amplified the dickishness of the characters because he misunderstood why people liked it. The scene with Norman Osborn and Radioactive Man was ridiculous. Osborn's a cynical racist - yeah we get that he's a bad guy. I don't need to be reminded constantly as I'm not a ****ing idiot. And going after the Steel Spider next? What the hell is that all about? Let's get a super-villian superhero team together and then we can capture ****ING Z LIST CHARACTERS THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO LOOK UP ON WIKIPEDIA. ****ing hell
and I can't recall seeing Penance once. The news thing didn't work in this issue like it did in #110. The Stan Lee cameo was retarded. Ellis needs to get it together and start hitting the goddamn ball again. D
Punisher War Journal #5 - I planned to drop this last month but then the whole thing where Castle may try to take over for Captain America thing happened and I have to stick in. The good news is that this book helps me stretch my mind trying to figure out if Olivetti or Fraction is less talented. I have no answer for you.
Why does this book have the corniest villains in it? This issue featured the Bushwacker. The Bushwacker, for those of you who don't know, has a cybernetic machine gun arm. My mistake, he has 2 cybernetic machine gun arms. This issue also featured a new character who became an auxillary police officer after 9/11. I'm really tired of reading 9/11 references and parallels in my comics. It's happening far too much lately. This thing was off the goddamn rails before it started.
The art is atrocious. I've seen more attractive things scrawled in feces on the wall in a bathroom. **** this book. F
DC
DC had a good week with a B+ average. Fables may have actually been my #1 book in a week without Bendis and Maleev.
Robin #160 - I liked this. It was odd to like a book again after the stretch I started out with. The story is cool and interesting and I'm not really lost despite the fact that I just started reading it with #159. Killa Nilla is a stupid character though. They just need to um .... not use him anymore.
A word on the art. I hate it. I like the book despite the art. It's just not good. It's very manga-ish. I suspect that Freddie Williams II has caused Freddy Williams I to change their name. Hell, I would. One more thing, why is Wolverine in the Lords street gang? Look at the drawings of them, you'll notice him right away.
Despite that, the story was cool enough. B
Fables #58 - This was a continuation of Bigby and family's trip to Grandpa's castle. It was a great story. It was fun. I liked that this issue was narrated by Ambrose (and from the future no less). The art was really cool. Allred's style is growing on me quickly. All of the panels look like they were drawn on wax paper. The people look like Shrinky Dinks. For some reason, it works. A-
Dark Horse
Dark Horse gets a rare $3 from me and completely earns it. Buffy was nearly my favorite book this week. It was #2.
Buffy #1 - I've been waiting for this for a long time. It feels like forever. I liked it a great deal. My favorite part was that Whedon still seems to have the voice of the characters down. Their dialogue felt like things they would say. The art was good.
There was one funny thing about it though. It's been a while since I've watched it and when they showed Dawn I remembered her as Tara. And then they started talking about her having sex with some guy and I went into a total snit about them 'transforming a lesbian character' when I remembered that she was actually Buffy's sister rather than Willow's girlfriend. I guess Xander's 'You could be her sister' line should've tipped me off. Oh well. I am an ass. A

Nice wrap up Fred. I noticed the Old SPice add last week, as it ruind the last page of CAp 25 for me screaming " The leader of the Avengers is Dead, Now buy some after shave and think about fellatio" The confession was great, punisher sucked and I really liked moon Knight (am I the only one?). I purchased Buffy, but Im saving it for a road trip to Vegas this weekend.

I missed it in Cap #25. I was really upset when I read it.
I don't know about Moon Knight man. It was the first book I read and it set the 'suck' tone for the first few books. Glad you liked it though. Don't want to step on your choices.
Edit: thanks by the way

Good choice on the Confession, sire. Both of Bendis' books were great this week, and after listening to the Bendis Tapes all day (great iFanboy plug toward the end of the third tape), I came to the realization that he is, wihout doubt, my favorite writer.
And Maleev's art was just.....AWE MAN. Stunning.
New Avengers was great....however, the art is kinda lost on me. I don't dislike it at all, it's just odd.
Otherwise, Ant-Man was good, Black Adam went ape shit in 52 (again, though, the art wasn't that good), and the last issue of Reign was the best in the series, IMO. Some great quips, and just an awesome use of Venom.
Thanks, Fred!
glad to do it darron
I did like Reign a lot. Maleev is my own personal jesus or some other terrible '80s reference. Ant-Man - I read that on Thursdays. Review coming soon.
The art in NA was more scrawling than drawing. Odd. Not my thing.
Hey I'ma throw my reviews up here too,
took last week off, it just seemed stupid to dive into too many conversations when I hadn't read Cap, still can't get it Toronto.
Anyways:
52 week 45: So the week after cap dies, we get a funeral here (not for cap) and it really doesn't carry weight, I guess Isis and Osirus just aren't icons or something, it just seemed off. The weird thing about this book is it seems like pages and pages still needed lettering. Anyways it's still cool to see Black Adam kick some serious ass.
Superman: I've been enjoying Busiek's run here but this issue feels like a waste of my money, how many joke playing "Prank" style villans are in the DCU anyways? It reminds me of the Christopher Walken SNL sketch where he pranks people, are you a stiffly stifferson? Will I come back for wonder woman next issue Kurt? I don't know.
Teen Titans: I still feel like this isn't up to the level it was at before the OYL jump. This issue in particular has some cool bits where each titan is given to a specific evil titan, or titan east. However, it falls into the DCU legacy book problem where if don't know all the history you're missing something, it's a pain in the ass. Still I've been flying blind with DCU history before and Geoff John's has come up with some real pay-offs. Time will tell.
New Avengers: Yeah, good times, so I guess I agree with most others that this book is great. But I agree with Fred, the art just isn't doing it for me. Doesn't Cage have pupils? Auditioning for the new Tintin movie I guess.
Thunderbolts: I liked this book too, more than Fred that's for sure. Yes the Stan Cameo was stupid, but no stupider than the actual reality show he "hosted" Art imitates life right? But perhaps I've got my Ellis blinders on, yes it seems like Steel Spider is crappy, but so did Jack Flag and ellis made him cool in two issues, so give Ellis the benefit here.
Still all in all, it seems like such a dull week after the last one. Can't wait till next week.
nice reviews. So did DC manage to ship the right story with the right cover of Superman this week?
on the Steel Spider thing:
maybe Ellis will make him cool. I'm just annoyed because I want to see them take on bigger people and also I've been reading PWJ and the villains are more obscure with every issue. This month it was Bushwacker. They've also featured StiltMan and a bunch of other tards.
It seems like editorial is holding back cool toys from certain titles. Why are putting them out if you don't believe in them?

Like, oh, I don't know....SPIDER-FRIGGIN'-MAN maybe? Or perhaps DAREDEVIL? How about the entire NEW EFFING AVENGERS?

That's a very good point. That show was nigh-unwatchable. Just cringe inducing.

that's true. I watched an episode or two but it gave me douche-chills. It bugged me though because it was like Ellis was making fun of Stan while making fun of the American public at the same time. I make fun of the American public all the time, and even I think Ellis has been doing it too much lately.
Because they'd lose. Badly
well yeah, but don't you want to see Venom get his ass kicked?

When we make fun of ourselves it's funny, when foreigner's do it it's insulting.
I love double-standards.
well yeah, but don't you want to see Venom get his ass kicked?
But he's so conflicted inside oh Gargan, hang in there guy.
I'd love to see him get his ass kicked. GO STEEL SPIDER!:D

That whole Gargan thing was ridiculous. It seemed like Ellis was just messing with us. Why would anyone care? Am I the only one who remembers the scene where he signed up for the Thunderbolts? Not a guy you can feel very sorry for.
The Steel Spider will kick nobody's ass. I wish he would. He won't though.

Every Marvel comic I read this week was terrible. Thunderbolts, New Avengers, CW Confession & War Journal were all such rubbish. Is Thunderbolts actually going anywhere interesting? Ellis is still a good writer but this book is frustrating the hell out of me. Rather liked the art in War Journal but I suppose it might not be to everyone's liking.
Fables & 52 were the most enjoyable books this week. Not a particularity good week in comics.

Eh. I don't care for the New Avengers team. and the flashback to what was going down during CW/Cap #25 seemed to try an tie things up a little too quickly. It just didn't grab me in plot or just fun action. Enjoyed Mighty Avengers much more than NA.
The Confession was total bull****. Does anyone actually know what the real reason Iron Man initiating CW was? Because from what is gleamed from Frontline, ASM, CW:TC, CW:I, etc, - I don't even think Marvel and the writers know. Great, Dr. Doom and the Zombies. Cap has read some books in the course of 80 years. Yeah, that doesn't make Tony or Cap's empty speeches any more insightful. Lovely to look at though.

It wasn't a flashback to Cap 25. It was a flashback to the NA team finding out that Cap was really dead(which was never shown before) and that Ms. Marvel had lied.

Yeah, I should have said; flashback to the events surrounding the fallout of CW and Cap #25. Presuming the NA are in Japan now (the flashback was a week ago, no?). But my impression of the book still stands. Too much plot crammed into the issue, not enough room to let either story unfold meaningfully.
I probably could have waited a bit to find out what was going down in Japan. In favor of the NA dealing with the loss of Cap and their attempt to rescue him. Or vice versa- rescue Echo, deal with Cap's death later.

Ok. woohoo! I can actually talk about weekly books now!
Thunderbolts - Given what's been said so far, it's odd, but I would actually make this my pick of the week. I was afraid this series was going to turn into "show up, z-list hero faces each T-bolt, Bullseye takes him out at end" My only T-bolts exposure has been since Ellis took over and those two issues seemed more like a video game where a hero shows up to fight each on at a time, like they were mini-bosses. I felt like in this issue, I actually had a chance to spend time with each of the characters (except Penance, thankfully! and Fred he was sitting at the table during the debrief. Hard to tell since there are multiple baldies on the team). Not knowing these characters, it gave a good set up of who's potentially reedemable and who's just straight messed up (looking at you, Bullseye!). Yes, there are tons of Z-list heroes that I've never heard of, but they can't do anything to an A-lister that would disrupt that character's regular title.
Robin - Never read it before, but picked it up as suggested by iFanboy. I liked the art (noir seems to be the new art style, so the cartoony look is somewhat refreshing). The storyline was ok, but nothing gripping. I think I'll continue to give this series a few issues.
The Confession - This would probably be a close runner up for POW. I really liked the Iron Man half, which I think gives Iron Man more of a chance to present his side of things. He is understandably an unlikeable character, but they have to make us somewhat sympathetic to him, esp if he will be in the Avengers still. Lot of talkie-talk, but I liked it. The ending scene was predictable, but still effective. The Cap part was fine, but just didn't seem to have the same weight as Tony confessing.
New Avengers - I really like the team's interactions more and more with each other, and I got a kick out of the Cage going to get milk intro. I like Yu's art in action, but sometimes when the team's just sitting there and talking it doesn't seem quite right. And I'm confused, Elektra's bad now? I also would've paid to see the New Avengers/Mighty Avengers throwdown over fake cap's body.
Buffy - I had to read it twice, but overall seems to have promise, but didn't deliver anything super awesome. The art was ok. Xander is Nick Fury and Dawn is a giant and Willow is somewhere I don't know. The Buffy thought monologues are great, I think it will be a few issues before Whedon solidifies his magic on this.
Franklin Richards - Yeah, I bought this. Very reminiscent of Calvin and Hobbes, though certainly not in that league. It had some cute moments, but probably wouldn't buy another one.

Thumbs up to New Avengers (I for one love the art; Luke Cage's stuff was probably the high point of the week), The Confession, Robin, and the introductory Buffy issue. Just a great week.
Thumbs down to Teen Titans (I picked up 43 and 44). A lot of exposition and horrendous pacing. I will not be picking up any more of this.

Yeah I'm struggling with this one, I've loved it since the relaunch, but the OYL jump has set something off and it doesn't have the heart it used to. And none of Tony Daniels women have hips, but I digress (I mean I wouldn't expect Frank Cho like hips, they are teens after all, but they're not boys either).

I understand that but I think that Bendis probably glossed over that because of all of the other places where it will be handled. The Fallen Son mini is the most notable example I think.

I think the MA/NA fight is going to begin in issue #30

I've actually enjoyed the few issues that I've read of this too. I wouldn't read a trade of it or anything, but it is fun in a single issue a few times a year.
nice reviews kwok

I picked up Robin for the first time yesterday as well because of the ifanboys. I enjoyed it a lot and didn't have any issues with the art like some have said. I did pick up on the Wolverineish guy who was so roided out that if he flexed wrong hi body would exploded and laughed.
I can't talk about The confession since my store didn't get it. My pick of the week was New Avengers. I enjoyed it a lot and was left saying damn you Bendis and your cliffhangers after cliffhangers into intros for the next month.
Silver Samuri after finding out the girl was Ronin turning and looking at the new Ronin and going then who are you and then they changed the subject made me laugh.
Reign was very very enjoyable and a good ending. If you haven't been reading this series bick up the trad eyou'll enjoy it.
I liked Moon Knight but was left feeling a little no wait a lot confused. Is this book that late or did Marvel do this on purpose. This book should have been out around the time of CW 6. Why dod this story at all if it's going to be this late. I think I'd rather they went a different direction with this book. Awesome art though.

Thunderbolts will pay off when we get that Bullseye v.s. SuperPro showdown that we have been waiting for since 1991.
I'm in the middle of the second trade of this. What differences came about with OYL? How did they screw it up?
It's tough to put a finger on to be honest. THe first OYL arc was about travelling around putting the team back together, with a whole bunch of cameo's by people I'd never heard of, and it just felt pointless, like killing time till they'd written the end of 52, or made some more decisions about who they could use, or something, I don't know.
It's gone from a book about reconizable young heroes struggling with identity and legacy to a book where too much DCU knowledge is required to catch everything. Plus it's hard to just immediately CARE about new characters because they're on the cover, you know? They talk about it in the book, how it doesn't FEEL like the titans, and they're right. No Bart, no Gar, and no Conner, makes me a sad panda.

Good yes, REALLY good, no. As good as it was, no. (not talking about the Leifield arc, of course).
Still I will be sad to see Johns leave the title.

It was a moneygrab. They've done it with Ghost Rider, Blade, and a few others that had nothing at all to do with the story. It's frustrating. I've stopped buying Ghost Rider and Blade under any circumstances. I don't care what banner they put on it.
I'm def. happy I finally told Wolerine Origins that it was a turd and left it on the shelf after reading your review.
I can't drop Origins. I hate that about myself. I have the premier hardcovers too. for shame!
Thunderbolts will pay off when we get that Bullseye v.s. SuperPro showdown that we have been waiting for since 1991.

Good yes, REALLY good, no. As good as it was, no. (not talking about the Leifield arc, of course).
Teen Titans and Robin have been two of the best post-OYL books. I'm enjoying it more now than I did pre-OYL.
Still I will be sad to see Johns leave the title.
I like Johns and he has done great stuff with this book but I think the time has come for him to move on; I am really excited about Beechen.

Yeah, ummmm, who was that guy? A red white and blue headdress? Really?!?
It's gone from a book about reconizable young heroes struggling with identity and legacy to a book where too much DCU knowledge is required to catch everything.
that's not good news for me. I have no dcu knowledge really. I've read a bunch of the classic stuff and some random others but there is a lot of stuff I don't know.

I was a bit annoyed by that whole exchange. I left it out of my review because there was so much else wrong with the issue.
(not talking about the Leifield arc, of course).
there was not a liefeld arc. please tell me you're kidding. How does that guy still get work?

well "when in rome" right? Agree to disagree, it just hasn't been exciting me the way it did, I mean the conner luther/kent dna stuff was just so fantastic...
Oh, right, Beechen takes over, and you guys rave about him, so I'll stick with it. Still Tony Daniels? or does he go too?

I didn't know who half of them were, either. You don't need to. You just have to know that they are young heroes (either sidekicks or modeling themselves after older heroes) trying to find their way in the world. Their histories are irrelevant to enjoying the overall themes of the story.

Ravager

I believe that Gail Simone wrote that arc. I don't know for sure, I didn't read them - I just tossed them away in the stack of comics on my dresser hoping to forget they existed.

Don't get me wrong, the book is still enjoyable, but wouldn't it be better if you knew WHY white martians were bad? or if a character has appeared before? Or who that guy with one arm is? and on and on
I guess it's simply my lack of knowledge, but I'd never had a problem before as the characters were more archtypal, you know? (read: Flash, wonder woman, supes types)

White Martians are evil. That's from the classic opening arc of Grant Morrison's JLA!
As for the rest, I don't know... I don't think it matters if I know all of the details of the guy with one arm's back story, just that he's a teen hero, and the teenage experience can be pretty universal. Ultimately the most important thing were the characters that ended up on the team, I think.

I think I'll make up my own backstories when I read it. That sounds like fun. How does one lose an arm? Funny ideas - come on now - submit your guesses
I'll say that he lost it trying to poke a badger with a spoon

Yeah I'm mostly a hypocrite, so often I've told people, "it's a comic, read it first and If you like it, read more, the details will spell themselves out." and here I am *****ing about too much continuity.

Just read this week's new New X-men. Emma erasing Kimura's mind was so perfectly Emma Frost, I couldn't help but smile. But the issue was just a mess of confusing action and convenient plotting. So now Cyclops is taking the new New X-men into the field with him? Pssh, 0/5 Marvel.

They didn't - Teen Titans is really good right now.
i agree with you conor. i was really close to dropping teen titans before OYL. and even though i wasn't impressed with the first few issues of the OYL arc, some of the new character intrigued me and i stuck with. boy im glad i did. that arc ended with a bang and this new one has been moving a mile a minute! I even loved the Kid Devil issue that took place between the 2 arcs. i've never been too impressed with geoff johns (i dont like it when he's referred to as DC's Bendis). he has done stuff i've really enjoyed (GL:rebirth, JSA) but the rest hasn't blown me away but i think this book is his best dc work right now (excluding JSA, thats just untouchable).
haven't read this new ish yet but im looking forward to it

The horrible thing is I think I just added Thunderbolts to my pull list at my shop. I'll give it one more month. I don't seem to hate it as much as some people here.
I loved New Avengers. Being a huge Wolverine fan, I like the dynamic of him with the rest of the team. I can't wait to see how the phony Cap battle pans out.
I succumbed to Origins yet again. Way makes me so mad. You can't bring back a character like Cyber in 2 and a half issues as a subplot. It's the one villain that scares Wolverine. You need to make it long and drawn out and scary. But I won't drop it... At least I won't buy the trades. Good lord Fred.
I loved the end of Reign. I think I'll have to end up buying the trade. I love the over all idea of the story and the message it provided.
Loved Buffy, but I'm going to need to get a hold of my friend who introduced me to it (I was more of an Angel fan, and she knows everything about Buffy) to get more of an understanding of what's going on.
Confessions was good, but not the best.

One thing that did bug me about New Avengers was when they were all hanging out in Strange's house (i seem to remember it being his kitchen) and luke says that now that Cap's gone the team has no one but each other. HELLO??? MCFLY????? look - the book sucks and I know that we(those of use that buy it) all are to blame. The problem is that if this bullshit becomes canon someone may go back to it and then I won't know what's going on. Also, I really love Wolverine and I want to have it.

they were in the kitchen
that scene had my number 1 'I hate this art' moment in it. It was the panel with Wolverine yelling with shit hanging out of his mouth. ugh
My two cents on a couple titles:
The Confession - Ultimately this felt like a little too little, a little too late for me. Plus I'm not sure I really bought that Tony foresaw Civil War cuz of a fight in King Arthur's time. And that one line about "dumping in breakfast bowls" was so out of place for the mood and character, it totally took me out of the story. On the other hand, Maleev just keeps getting better - the two page spread at the end of the first story is gorgeous. My Grade = C+
New Avengers - Where I would respectfully dissent from Fred's opinion and some others, is on Yu's art: he is fast making his way on to My List of Favorite Artists. His scrawling pencils have a lot of energy, and he puts a lot of nice details into a lot of panels - there's an almost graffiti-style vibe that feels perfect for this team right now. The story was great fun, too. My Grade = A

Since I went to see 300 last night, I'm just now getting to my books for the week. So I will be posting my thoughts on the various titles as I read them. First up...
New Avengers #28 – The New Avengers is so well written. Bendis really knows how to write the Avengers. The banter was fun, even if a little forced at times. Love the chemistry that is emerging with the new line-up. Luke Cage is such a bad-ass. He’s perfect to lead the Avengers right now. They almost had me with the bait-and-switch on Captain America in the Raft. Glad it wasn’t him. I would have been majorly annoyed. Also glad they addressed the Spider-Woman and Ms. Marvel encounter. I also liked the back-and-forth storytelling from Japan and New York. Next issue promises to be a great throw-down with the NA battling both the MA and the Hand. Can’t wait.

How does the art grab you?
There were a couple instances where the art made me sick. The only example I can recall is the expression on Wong's face when Luke came back to the house. It looked out of place with the rest of the style. So much so that it took me out of the moment and had me questioning what was wrong with Wong. However I can forgive that, because the last page was very cool and the fight scenes were very nicely organized.
I love Kirkman. I read the preview and it seems interesting. Also, his description of the series in the column helps.

Civil War: The Confession #1 – Really liked this one. Nice coda to CW. In the first story, I wondered who Tony was talking to. I assumed it was Cap, but became unsure when it became obvious that it was a monologue. Even though I had guessed it by the end, the story moved me when I turned the page to see that Tony had been addressing Cap’s corpse. Sadness and regret. This speech was the sum of what Tony should have said to Cap in the second story, but did not. A missed opportunity. I liked the identification of Cap with the young soldier in the second story. Cap was a soldier ‘til the end. I’m glad this story portrayed him as defiant until the end, as well. Even in prison, Cap conveyed strength and resoluteness – this was the Cap we know, love and admire. A fitting last scene for him – alive that is.
I liked Maleev on the art.

Thunderbolts #112 – I thought it was a slow, but basically good issue. It was different from the last two. This issue took time to focus on the individual members of Thunderbolts, their stories and their idiosyncrasies. I thought it was amusing that Radioactive Man was complaining about the aesthetics of his suit. Bullseye ruminating on his pseudo-divinity and relationship to God: “Maybe killing as fast as creates makes me God’s only friend.” Then there was Osborn’s seemingly strange sense of humor which revealed itself as madness. I liked this fleshing out of the characters. I do agree that the Stan Lee cameo was a bit cheesy. I don’t know why Marvel would want to remind anyone of that awful t.v. show, “Who Wants to Be a Superhero?” Awful! And evidently they are going to actually have a second season.

52 Week Forty-Five – One of the best issues yet. 52 keeps getting better and better. I have always thought of Captain Marvel and Black Adam as adversaries. It was a little strange to see the Shazam family at the Black Adam funerals – in the same way it was odd to have seen them at Black Adam’s and Isis’ wedding. I have a confession to make. I’ve always been a big fan of the Big Cheese. I have most of the Shazam comics from the revival in the 1970s. But as much as I like Capt. Marvel, I’ve never really thought of him as a serious superhero. Black Adam, on the other hand, is far more multidimensional as a character. In this issue, you could feel his grief and pain. You could sympathize with his anger and desire for revenge, even though you might not agree with his actions. Plainly put, Black Adam is just more interesting than Capt. Marvel ever will be. Confession over.
I also dug seeing Renee don the coat and hat of the Question.

Fables #58 – All in all, I enjoyed this two-part story. I hope that Willingham will flesh out even more of the story behind Bigby’s bad relationship with his father. Not too keen on Allred’s art. It’s passable, but I much prefer Mark Buckingham. Hope he's back by the next issue.

What's the deal with Black Adam? He's a bad guy right? Where does he come from? How's he related to Shazam? They both have the lightning bolt on their chest.

Black Adam
Black Adam is a fictional comic book character whose morally ambiguous nature has his character fall between the lines of heroism and villainy; as a result, he has associated himself with both superheroes and supervillains in the past.
The character was originally created in 1945 for the premiere issue of Fawcett Comics' The Marvel Family comic book by Otto Binder and C.C. Beck as an "evil" version of Fawcett's popular Captain Marvel character. Adam was later revived by DC Comics in the 1970s Shazam! comic book, becoming Captain Marvel's most powerful foe in terms of physical abilities. Originally called Teth-Adam (translated into English as Mighty Adam) in ancient Egypt, Black Adam was a previous appointee of the wizard Shazam, but soon used his power for his own corrupt ends, which forced the wizard to punish him. Generally, that punishment was to remove Adam from that time, only to appear in modern times to challenge Shazam's current appointee, Billy Batson, in his Captain Marvel form.
By the early 21st century, Adam had been redefined by DC writers Jerry Ordway, Geoff Johns, and David S. Goyer as a corrupted anti-hero attempting to clear his name, but unable to fully rid himself of his evil influences. Adam's personal goal is to enforce justice; however, his ideals of justice, often involving hostile action or execution, are considered extreme by many of the heroes who have attempted to give the former supervillain a second chance. This current version of Black Adam is the ruler of Kahndaq, a fictional Middle Eastern nation in the DC Universe. Featured roles in comic books series such as JSA, Villains United, Infinite Crisis, and 52 have elevated the character to a level of prominence in DC Comics nearly surpassing that of Captain Marvel.
Adam is depicted as a powerful Arab man wearing a costume similar to Captain Marvel's, except that the red portions are instead black, and Adam does not usually wear a cape (recent depictions of the character give him a black cape similar to the other Marvels'). Some artists, following C.C. Beck's original design, also depict Adam with pointed, elfin ears.

Spider-Man Reign #4 – Most excellent. Even as an old-timer, Spidey can fling those webs and save the day. Touching sub-story about Sandman and his daughter. Wasn’t initially crazy about the art on this mini-series, but I came to like it. It seemed to fit the story.

Robin #160 – I love this comic. Robin is the coolest. It shows why he is not just a side-kick, but a hero in his own right. He can throw-down with the best of them. And even when he does get his butt handed to him (by the doped-up Lords), he uses his brains to deter them and escape. He’s a master detective, tracking down DNA leads (and he hasn’t even graduated from high school), interrogating lying corporate VPs, and hiding damsels in distress. Robin’s the complete package, the real deal. If you’re not reading Robin, then you’re missing out on one of the best comics published today.

Green Arrow #72 – This was one ass-kicking comic. In my opinion, I think it could easily have been the POW. Fun, fun, fun! Nothing quite like a superhero rumble in the (concrete) jungle, with wacko-ex-sidekicks out for a perverse mind-game paybacks to torment former mentors. I know I’m going to catch hell from the forum for this next statement, but I freakin’ love the Red Hood. Yeah he’s a loon, but Jason Todd is one fun psycho bad boy. He’s willing to cross the line to right a wrong. In his own words: “I know that sometimes very bad things have to be done to do a great right.” He’s becoming DC’s Punisher (I’m really going to catch heat for that one).
The other thing I really loved about GA this month was the repartee between Ollie and the Bat. It’s the banter of really old friends who both love and loath each other. Here are a couple of examples.
GA: “You never change.
Batman: “No. Can we table the part where you hypocritically judge me and focus on finding your partner?”
GA: “…Never change…”
GA: “You’re poison, man. This kid (Red Hood) is just another example of how you breed as much trouble as you break. The big bad Dark Knight. You’re a walking psychosis, and every damned manner of sociopathic fruit fly flits toward you.”
GA: “I never said I was perfect.”
Batman: “No one has.”
GA: “Shut up and drive.”
No one can talk to the Bat like Ollie!
I just can’t believe that GA is going to end soon. I hope it won’t be long before it’s relaunched.

Wonder Woman #5 – I expected not to like this issue, but the truth is that I did. I totally bought into the story that Wonder Woman would be an inspiration to battered women. It's logical. It was a good issue – not great – but good. The art was passable. I liked the way they drew Diana as this larger than life figure, standing a good head above other women.

It was a surprisingly touching story and I thought was pretty good. Much better than the art on New Avengers.

Little known fact: while Iron Fist was Daredevil, Abe Vigoda filled in for Danny Rand.
While I am certainly on the pro-Yu side of whatever debate there may be, I would concede that he still has some room to improve – looking over the last two NA issues, there are panels that could definitely be clearer and a few wonky things. For me, these are far outweighed by his overall style and some awesome panels – the beginning of #27, from the scenes in the bar to that first splash page, are tremendous; I loved the convenient store scene in #28 and generally most of the multi-ninja get-it-ons. But, it’s still early for him – I mean, look how long Maleev was revered on Daredevil and now he’s totally taken it to a new level.

Nobody ever gives the business to the inker... or, wait, is he his own inker?
I'll have my "I'm With Yu" banner ready by this afternoon, for the pun value alone.
I finally read Thunderbolts. If they do to the Steel Spider what they did to Jack Flag, I'm afraid they'll have seen the last of me. I actually remember the origin of the Steel Spider, so Mr. Ellis will be going after someone I know this time, and I think it will just be too much. I don't like feeling like I'm paying for the author's therapy.

Lone Ranger #5 – I love this re-imagining of the Lone Ranger. This issue marks the Rangers public debut as defender of the downtrodden. Brett Matthews, the writer, portrays him as young and inexperienced, but not without skill. He is full of righteous anger over his father and brother’s deaths. But he is clear that it is justice he seeks, not vengeance. Tonto is different from any previous incarnation. He is no naïve sick-kick. Tonto is the wise teacher and mentor to this green vigilante. He has his own demons, which he doesn’t care to share. The art by Sergio Cariello is excellent. The cover of the Lone Ranger with both guns drawn is exceptional.

It's 81 degrees here in good ol' Southern California. Yup, I think I just may go swimming! Such a nice day out. Actually, swimming does sound goood. PEACE!

This is the tail end of Josh's first winter in NYC after living in LA since 2000. He is taking it hard. Southern California softened him.

Ok, before, I go...you wanna hear something funny? I've NEVER been in the snow. I could drive 2 hours to Big Bear, but never have. Just one of those things, y'know?

I just made it home. 2 hours for a trip that generally takes 35-40 minutes.

I'll allow it.
if it makes you all feel any better, the pool was a 'frigid' 52 degrees.

Yes.
Especially considering I just fell down the sleet covered steps in my futile attempt at shoveling them clear.
I'm ordering a pizza and I honestly don't care what happens to the delivery guy on his way back from my house.
I'm imagining the Bumble from the Rudolph cartoon roaming around out there.

I feel like a live in a goddamn fjord. I keep looking out the window expecting to see Bjork running through the yard dressed as a duck or a giant teddy bear.

Currently waiting on a either a metal shovel or a garden hoe or something to cut through the ice. I have a lot of steps going down to the sidewalk, and they are under solid white ice. It's basically a slope at this point, and my regular shovel is merely angering it.
Meanwhile, the asshole across the street just plowed his snow to our side, filling two parking spaces. He then drove off. Thinking of taking the hedge-clippers to his new garden hoses.

Wouldn't blame you one bit.
the problem here is that the city will come through today and leave me a brand new 5 foot snowbank at the bottom of my driveway. Would LOVE to leave nails at the bottom of my driveway if I didn't know it would ultimately probably **** me
BTW, I've had and I'm moving to Belize. Does anyone know if they have high-speed internet there?
paper

Not sure about high speed internet, but they do have the second longest barrier reef in the world. Won a contest on a cruise with that one.
Nice Jean Shepherd reference.

This is what attracts me to Belize
