Runaways #25 ships on April 4th. It's the first Joss Whedon issue and in this arc they take a trip to New York. Here's the link:

I'd love to comment, but it literally hurts to try and read that. The art looks ok, though. Not my cup-o-tea, but it looks like it'll fit well.

I've never read Runaways (thinking of picking up a trade eventually) but this makes me want to start picking it up. Maybe I'll come back for a primer if I decide to.

The next issue I'm sure will be a good jumping on point, but in all honesty, you should catch up. The whole series is great.
(Ron may think there are some hiccups here and there, but there are some great cameos and good surprises)

agreed, it looks like they're anticipating new readers as there is a recap of sorts in the preview but it is really good.

I hope Whedon doesn't turn the Runaways into Buffy the next generation.

I hope Whedon doesn't turn the Runaways into Buffy the next generation.

How do you mean? Sure he's got an obsession with super-powered young girls, but frankly, Runaways is already bursting at the seams with them.

They also already have pop-culture heavy dialogue. I'm not sure how it could be more Buffy, other than to add supernatural elements.

Plus, he's already got Buffy season 8 to work out any leftover Buffy storylines that he wants to use.

As far as starting to read the series, I highly recommend the first oversized hardcover. More or less a complete story unto itself and very affordable.

I bought the harcover, one of the best purchases, i've ever made.

Ok this is a totally fanboy thing to say but is anyone else annoyed with the fact that Chase is geeking out over She-Hulk? Anyone remember the second new york issue (10 i think) where he ignores her and tells Niko to calm down?

BKV has already set personas for each of the characters and I hope that Whedon wouldn't impose his Buffy archetypes on them. He does great work on Astonishing, but every once in a while, I feel like Kitty is just Buffy version 2.

Extremely fine line there.

It's the art that has me concerned. This is....I don't even want to talk about how lackluster this art change is.

I've heard in more than a few interviews that Kitty was a big influence on his creation of Buffy. That might help explain any similarities between the two characters and the way he writes them.

Agreed. If you look at the art in issue 1 of Runaways Vol. 1 and compare to the last issue, Alphona improved drastically. His current work is beautiful. This new art is... different.

The new art reminds me of the time I fell off my bike and skinned my knee when I was six.

Who colored this? It looks like seasickness and longing.

I've heard that too. It's not so surprising given this

Just be prepared to go back and devour BKV's run when you get really into Whedon's.

Hmm I guess the third hardcover is it for me? BKV and Alphonso stopped with #23? So two hardcovers to go?

I just checked my Amazon wishlist and the volume 3 hard cover goes up to #24 and I think that will be it for me. The art on that preview does not look half as good as Alphonso's. I also was not terribly impressed by Astonishing X-Men either.
