The NCAA fantasy league got me itching for some real competition, so I set up a head-to-head fantasy baseball league!

-You'll need to have an account on Yahoo to play
-Head to Yahoo fantasy sports
-Click the "Sign up now" button under "Baseball" (http://baseball.fantasysports.yahoo.com/b1)
-Click "Join a Group"
-Click "Join Private" and enter in the following ID and password:

Group ID#: 223134
Password: comicbooks

It's the free league so we can only have up to 12 teams. If you're interested sign up quick. The draft deadline is April 28.

I'm in with iSteve's Avengers! How & when do we pick players?

conorkilpatrick
03-16-2007, 10:46 PM
Once the league is set we'll pick a draft date. We're going to do an autodraft so how it works is you can rank the players in the order you'd want them (or keep the Yahoo Sports rankings) and on auto draft day they will be... auto drafted by computer.

And if they haven't come up with a test for HGH, I'm sure it's years before they find one for MGH.

Give it until Tuesday or Wednesday after people get back from the weekend. I'm sure we can fill up the twelve spaces. More players, more fun.

Sadly, I had to go through a 12-step program to get off Fantasy Baseball - 6 years sober this year. I used to play something called Scoresheet baseball, which simulates real games and everything. I was completely obsessed. It's not something I can enter into lightly. So I will be forced to live vicariously instead.

One year I was in four leagues and it was too much. I couldn't focus on any of them to be at all effective. This year it will be two leagues and that's my max.

admittedly, this is disgusting. In fact, that's why I find it funny.

Furries(weirdos who dress up in costumes and develop a 'fursona' to go along with it) sometimes rub up against one another in their costumes to simulate sex. This is called yiffing.

Imagine their poor mothers having to wash out the inside of those things!

Mine was a play on Buffalo Bill in the mirror in Silence of the Lambs

Would you **** me? I'd **** me.

You're right - April 1st is Opening Night. So that would put the draft on March 25th.

We're not going to do a live draft. We're just going to set a day/time and I'm going to press the draft button and it's all going to happen auto-style based on your pre-rankings (which are already set from Yahoo Sports' rankings but you can alter to fit your tastes).

Why? I thought Yahoo accounted for people participating (who could select live) and those who weren’t (would pick based upon their preranking).

These are the two draft options:

Live Online Draft
You will participate in a live online draft that may last several hours and requires a Java-enabled browser. In addition, you may be unable to participate if you are using AOL as your internet service provider, or access the web from behind a firewall.

Autopick Draft
We will draft teams for your league based on either our default rankings or individual manager's pre-draft player rankings. Once you set your league's draft status to Ready, your draft will happen within 72 hours.

I'm going to find out if we could do a live draft but still have some people set to auto. We should be able to, my other league allows for that.

Would people be up for a live draft on, like, Saturday?

***ATTENTION***

The auto DRAFT will be THIS Saturday, March 24th. Sometime in the afternoon.

As of right now there are NINE teams out of a possible TWELVE. It's a head-to-head league so there needs to be an EVEN number. If we don't get another team before Saturday I have a few people in mind that I can get to join.

But if you thought at all about joining the league, now's the time - we have three more slots!

Figured I’d at least try and help. (Sorry to step on your toes Conor, figured you’d be busy with the podcast today)

iSteve – Please don’t get offended by my response. I really don’t know how much you’ve been exposed to this, so I apologize if you know all of this already.

Setting and monitoring your team will probably be the most important thing. It looks like it’s set up head-to-head, so each week, your team will face off against another person’s team to see which team gets the best compilation of preselected stats (ERA, wins, hits, HRs). Before the week starts, you will need to set your team. So one thing before the week starts is to consider people who aren’t doing good or injured and make sure you have the best possible people playing for your team that week. During the week, you will probably be unable to make any changes to your team, which is why it’s important to make sure everyone playing for you can contribute. Starting pitchers may be the trickiest ones to figure out, since they don’t always pitch every day. You probably want to look to make sure they are anticipated to pitch that week (anticipated start dates are marked usually on your team pages); most pitchers will usually pitch at least once a week, though.

Probably after the draft, you’ll want to see if you have holes in any particular position and pick up any people not drafted that can help you.

Kwok, there's no way you can offend me. I appreciate all the help I can get. If anything, you may have over-estimated my starting knowledge of how this is done. When I "set" my team, I do this based upon what's happening in real time with the players right? If a given pitcher is hurt, I shouldn't play him right?

Correct. If a guy is put on the DL (disabled list), Yahoo will generally update it so you know he’s out. Players will often miss games because of random tweaks or sprains, which won’t be marked on the player, so you’ll just have to keep an eye out for that (Yahoo sometimes ties any news to the player’s link).

7. Gotham Goliaths
8. Fred's Squad
9. M. Hundred's Office
10. Dallas Darkstars
11. Graymalkin Phoenixes
12. ACBG's Braves

I am going to enable the draft sometime around 3pm EST tomorrow (Saturday).

Note on the draft:
The order reverses each round so the team that starts the first round ends the second, while the team that ends the first round starts the second.

Pre-Draft Winners: Jerome & ACBG (two picks in a row each)

Pre-Draft Losers: Kwok, Fred & I (always right in the middle of the round)

picking first wouldn't have even helped me

NOW I'm ready.

When you say every red sox do you mean the ones on the team now or past ones? Also, how does head-to-head play work? I'm still confused when it comes to this..

I took out ever Royal, Devil Ray and Pirate..

Every week you are paired up with another team and you accumulate points based off of statistical categories. If you have more points than the other guy at the end of the week you win.

You can change they every day if you want to, but you really don't get enough bench players to do this. It's really only a consideration with starting pitchers.

When you look at your team, anyone with a "BN" designation is benched - they are on your team, but none of their stats will contribute to your team. So if you want to change people around, you can click and hold that blue box next to their name and drag them to whatever position you want them to play (if you want to switch your lineup). Players are only allowed to play certain positions (designated underneath their name) - ex: a catcher cannot play 1b on your team. However each team has a "UTIL" (utility) position on their team that a batter of any position can play in.

The game starting will coincide with the actual real MLB games starting, so it looks like week 1 will be 4/1 - 4/8. You can also tell by looking at your matchup for the week.

I'll need to. My wife is the real sports fanatic in our household. Any athletic skill our kids have comes from her.

Of all sports, I probably enjoy baseball the most. There's nothing quite like taking in a Richmond Braves game at the local stadium. I especially like the feel of minor league baseball.

You can do it two ways:
1. click on drop players then check off Francisco Lirano then press continue.
2. click on add player and on the top part of the page change position to all pitchers click on filter and find the player you want then click on the + sign which should give you an option add this player and drop another player click on that and you should be ok.

Jered Weaver keep.. Freddy Sanchez keep.. Freddy Garcia i'm not familiar with.. You are going to have to fiddle with your lineup big time.. As long as they are bench while on the DL, you are ok. You just have to check and see when they are off the DL so you can put them into play. I hat to say it but its a daily thing like this message board. ;)

When you see a ^ next to the pitcher's name that mean's they are starting that day so you want to change them to sp and that pitcher to either p or bench..

I'm not in the league but some helpful info for those playing and some assumptions since I don't want to read back the league details. I'm assuming that the matches are head to head in stats therefore you are only competing against one person each week. If a player is on the DL, you are basically losing out on that particular stats category whether in hitting or pitching. Also if you have a player that you want to keep but is currently injured then you should be able to put them on injured reserved,IR, and then be able to pick up another player since you are limited to the number of players you are allowed to have. On the flip side you will have to eventually drop a player in that particular position if you want to take that player off of IR. Hope that info helped.

it's a strange system

there are 22 or so stat categories and the score runs head to head in each of those categories

You are going head-to-head in the stat categories and you get one point for every category you are winning. So last night a bunch of categories switched leaders, apparently.

Example:

Your team has 12 RBIs
The other team has 11 RBIs

You get one point.

And then last night let's say your team collects 7 RBIs and the other team collects 10. Now the score in that cateory is:

Your team 19 RBIs
The other team: 21 RBIs

Now you've lost a point and the other team has gained one.
