I considered putting it on my list. Spectacular film. Perhaps, Malick's strongest narrative since Days Of Heaven. Q'Orianka Kilcher's performance is astoundingly good.

Dudes. I saw Superbad last night. it's like.. a mix between Apatow comedies and Grandma's Boy.
I thought it was pretty goddamn funny. Funniest movie I've seen this year.

Apataw comedies mixed with Grandma's Boy (One of my favorite comedies of the past few years)? Holy hell, Dude, you made my day. I knew it couldn't go bad.
So Michael Cera, I assume, is pretty good then? I don't think I've seen him on the big screen, but everything I have seen him in, he's been golden.
Thanks man. That's great to hear.

Just like that preview for ENCHANTED, I think it's called, which played before Harry Potter-- the one with Amy Addams. I wanted to hate it but at the end of the preview I laughed pretty loud.

When I was at the movies last week there was a trailer for some stupid movie (http://joblo.com/upcomingmovies/movies.php?id=2707) he did with a kid and he was billed as Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Maybe that was the last of "The Rock" movies.

I've seen the trailer too. I don't know what was more cringe-worthy about it - the trailer or the fact that others in the theater were laughing.

I loved the shakey cam, Bourne rocks my socks
I loved the shakey cam,
Hey I've been sober for a couple of days, no shakey cam here...
I saw a few movies this weekend.
I saw Oceans 13 Friday night. It was a lot of fun. It had good action, a good story, and great dialogue. The plot had holes that you could drive a truck through. I was so into it while it was on though that I didn't even really think about that until later.
I saw 50 First Dates again. It's another fun movie. It's not great art or anything but it's funny and sweet. I think this was my third time and it hasn't gotten any weaker for me.
I just got done watching Narc with Jason Patric and Ray Liotta. Holy shit it was a ****ed up movie! I loved it. It was truly awesome. I don't want to say too much about it outside of "see it if you haven't" as I don't want to ruin it.

Yea, I don't think it did too well in theaters anyways, so it probably just came and went. I just saw it a few months ago. It kicked my nuts and spat in my Mom's face, and I just went back for more.
I've seen a lot of movies. Generally I'm not surprised by the ending. Usually I have it more or less nailed down by the midway point. With Narc, not only was I surprised but I took the bait and expected what they wanted me to.

True. Aside from the cheesecake appeal of that movie, it's a really good story. My wife is like you and usually has those kind of things figured out by mid way through but this one took her by surprise.
I saw The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie last night, or at least the first hour of it. It had its moments but overall I wasn't into it. To say that I had a difficult time staying awake during it is like saying that water is wet; it's obvious and unnecessary.

Well I had a little horror mini-marathon this past weekend.
I rewatched High Tension , The Descent , and Feast.
If anyone has missed these 3 movies, I recommend checking them all out.
High Tension is a French movie that is crazy, trippy, and awesome all at the same time. I really didn't like it the first time I watched it, but after a while I warmed up to it. A-
The Descent is just a bad-ass flick. I'm claustrophobic and this movie was made to scare the crap out of me. I haven't felt tension while watching a movie like this before. I actually was uncomfortable watching it, but in a good way. A+
Feast is a goofy fun time. It attempts to take the general horror movie and does the trendy "Turns it on its head" movie. The opening sequence is probably one of the funniest/slickest openings in recent memory. B+

The Descent is great. I love the ending.
Which ending are you referring to? There are 2 that I know of...

The other has her dreaming of her daughter as she lies where she fell, as the creatures scream and come towards her.

Pretty funny movie. It's very 80's though. So If you're not into the whole... cheesy special effects thing... you might not dig it that much. I watchd it because of my boyfriend who's very into "So bad it's good" type movies. Although, I'm not and I still enjoyed it. But it played with that line.

That stuff at the beginning scared me more then anything that happened with the beastie things.
I don't know how many people in here have seen both Descent and 28 Weeks Later, but I would like other people's opinions on something.
When 28 Weeks Later came out, a lot of people were telling me how great the "night vision scene" was. I was dissapointed after I watched it, because the same idea was done in Descent, I feel, in a much much better way. What do you all think?

agreed, 28 weeks later was pretty weak.
SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
when i saw that all the one chick to see was the night vision on her camcorder, i told my roommate that the lights had to go off, that's the only way to watch a scene like that. It was really cool, but i was a little disappointed in the fact that they didn't stick with it for longer. i would have loved a bit more where all we saw was her holding the camera and everything being in darkness exept the nightvision screen (but i guess that would have been visually boring)

The more I think about it the more I like 28 weeks later. I will never stop being interested in the after affects of a Zombie attack, because we've still only seen it done a few times. I thought it was leaps and BOUNDS better than Day of the Dead. Once I saw 28 weeks later I realized I only liked Day of the Dead because it was the only movie I'd seen do that idea.

"The" Day
The Departed (a good movie. amazing acting. story ran a little long though)

The Prestige (havent watched it yet)
Candy Day
Candy (heath ledgers best movie, easily. absolutely amazing plot line.)
Hard Candy (my new absolute favorite movie. cinematography was aaaawesome)
Fifty Pills (fun teenage movie. the plot was lacking a bit.)
Horror Day
Zombie Nation (ive yet to see a worse movie. maple dropped the ball on this. i coulod have doubled the budget on my walmart pay.)
Dead Silence (five dollars to name a plot device they didnt use)
Hannibal Rising (a good film. could have been better had they made it about a completely original character. i liked hannibal better without this movie.)
I also rented Pan's Labyrinth. That was a pretty good movie, I would have liked to have seen the fantasy side done a little more though.

Omg omg omg omg... why do they STOCK Zombie Nation!??! Everyone dropped the ball on that movie. In fact there was no ball to hand action ever. The ball just smashed everyone in the face. Then it went on to smash any acting ability, sets, plot or logic. In fact, I distinctly remember getting a headache while watching it so I may have gotten smashed just by watching it.
Did you finish? I finally stopped the agony when the zombies (aka girls with some large bags under their eyes) not only talked... but then drove the car away. I'm only got that far because I was on my computer at the same time and only half watching.
Sometimes I still have nightmares of spanking some weird old german man on his bare ass.

Sometimes I still have nightmares of spanking some weird old german man on his bare ass.Actually I didnt even make it that far. I saw the whole idea of the cop kidnapping girls from the beginning. But the acting was just terrible. Bad enough to make me want to shut it off. But I didnt. Then the clip of the man being spanked with a whip one hundred times was bad enough to make me shut it off, but I didnt. Then the lady mistreating her child so heinously was bad enough to make me shut it off, but I didnt. So on and so forth. Then I saw the flash of a girl in black eye makeup, that was obviously supposed to be a zombie. I know girls who look more like zombies naturally than that. That's where I lost it. And that's just the first half hour.

When and where was your buddy performing in it? Was it the one at the Arden like two summers ago? I saw that twice. It was spectacular. Apparently Jim Carrey even showed up to see it.
ST is a great musical, and a really good one for people who don't usually like them. I'm just a big fruit, so I really go for them anyway. The story to this is so cool and so disturbing. It's also really funny. Hope it's a big success. The cast is pitch perfect.

Okay, cool. He was in the ensemble so I'm not sure which one he was. But it was such an incredible production. The guy who played Sweeney Todd would lurk up in the rafters before every show and do his entrance from above (there was a large framework of fire escapes on the back wall.) And they sold pie at the intermission, which is pretty funny if you know the story.

I'm kidding, of course. Actually, the trailer doesn't look nearly as shite as I expected it to. But I really like that Jason Lee is doing all these flicks of cartoons I watched as a kid. Underdog is gonna rule.
Ok, I actually came on to post the trailer for the new Beowolf flick. Completely CGI/Motion Capture, and it looks stunning. This flick will be astounding in Iman 3-D. Check it out here. (http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/beowulf/)

I don't think the ending was awful, but I think Boyle's stylistic touches robbed it of the tension it needed.

Roger Ebert is the only movie critic in history to win a pulitzer prize. Have you ever listened to his commentary tracks on DVDs like Dark City and Citizen Kane? he's really insightful. basically he's the only critic that i will listen to and i actually respect his opinion. That being said, i would still see a movie that he has panned, but i've also seen certain flicks based solely on his recommendations.

he's definitely the more moderate of the two, Ebert is more intellectual and can come off like a movie snob sometimes, while Roeper will endorse some of the more popcorn friendly flicks.

I have NEVER in my life thought I'd hear anyone call Roper an arty snob. I've read the dudes columns for years before he joined up with Ebert. That guy is as common dominator as one can get.
Often when folks says things like "critics are useless", they really mean "critics who don't share my sensibilities are useless". I find value in differing viewpoints either way and do agree that one should be a bit dilettantish w/r/t informed opinions on a given subject. Of which, none can claim Ebert to not be versed in the finer points of film.

All professional movie critics are arty snobs to some degree. Roeper less so that those he has guest hosted with and more so than Ebert. I see Roeper giving positive reviews to things he never would have when he started out on the show.

Sure. Do see Lynch's Elephant Man and Eraserhead if you haven't. Obviously, you want to check out Brakhage (My mom got me the DVD set for X-mas. Should be able to find that if you shop around), some Fellini (Satyricon will eat your soul), Bergman (natch), Cocteau is also godlike and wonderful.
Lars von Trier, Korine and Atom Egoyan have rather sophisticated elements of surrealism in their work (not to get too deeply into dogme).
You got your Weekend (Godard), Blood of the Poet (wonderful!), The Seashell and the Clergyman (Dulac's only film, no?), Clair's Paris Qui Dort and essentially anything the mighty Bunuel ever put his hand to are worth a viewing.
But honestly, Chaplin created the avant-garde cinema. The mind reels when considering his genius. Do try to dig up that Stan Brakhage dvd set, By Brakhage though. Truly a wonderful collection of an important filmmakers work, even if it is missing the brilliant Text of Light series.

I've seen all his features proper. None of the television stuff though.
The Sweet Hereafter not so much (though I do think it is a great film). Exotica most definitely. Just the floatly, almost ephemeral feel of the entire film owes a bit of debt to the more dream-like works of cinema pur. The Adjuster and Ararat are also quite good (shades of Sturges and Antonioni right there).
Actually, I take that back. The Sweet Hereafter seems to exists in this insular place of sorrow and hopelessness. Very surreal in tone if not in say, Kafka-ish bizarreness.

"Bourne" slays Homer in biggest August film opening
Sunday August 5 3:47 PM ET
The amnesiac assassin Jason Bourne is back, and this time he clobbered Homer Simpson on his way to scoring the biggest film opening ever for the month of August.
"The Bourne Ultimatum," the third movie in the espionage action series starring Matt Damon as a one-time CIA hit man searching for his past, grossed $70.2 million its first weekend to rank as North America's top film at the box office, according to studio estimates on Sunday.
That tally, fueling an unusual late-summer rally at the multiplex, far exceeded the debut ticket sales generated by the first two films in the Universal Pictures franchise.
By comparison, "The Bourne Identity" opened at No. 2 with $27.1 million in June 2002, and the "The Bourne Supremacy" landed at No. 1 in July 2004 with $52.5 million. Those two films went on to gross nearly $485 million worldwide combined.
The latest "Bourne" total marks the biggest first weekend ever for a movie in August, surpassing the $67.4 million opening posted by "Rush Hour 2" the same weekend in 2001.
"Bourne Ultimatum," which like its immediate predecessor was directed by British filmmaker Paul Greengrass, clearly benefited from the rave reviews it earned for its tightly wound, heart-pounding action.
Exit polls showed the movie played to a slightly older crowd than much of the summer's high-profile popcorn fare, with 57 percent of its audience over the age of 30.

Back to topic though Frank Darabont doing Fahrenheit 451 seems like something I could get excited about. Shawshank Redemtion and Green Mile were both amazing. I saw the 60's version maybe... 7 years ago? I don't remember if it was good, the main thing I remember is that the futuristic styling was extremely dated. If was definitley 60's futuristic. It was pretty distracting in my opinion..

Any fans of Fahrenheit 451 ? They're making a movie version helmed by Frank Darabont.
Well anyway they've announced who the main character is going to be played by, Tom Hanks.
Just curious if anyone on here is a die-hard Fahrenheit fan or if anyone's excited to see this one.

hmmmm.... apparently they are making a Casablanca remake (http://www.cbc.ca/arts/film/story/2007/08/08/indian-casablanca.html) and it's being set in India.
I've never seen the original, but i've been meaning to. It stricks me that this is such a classic, that most people say still holds up, that it shouldn't be made.

Sadly I can't see that link while I'm at work, but if they're changing the setting, it's probably more of an "Re-Imagining" type deal. Ala Baz Luhrman's Romeo and Juliet or West Side Story. Same basic story, different place and time.

Perhaps that isn't the way to say it. My wife watches that show on tv with the aspiring directors (I think it's called On The Lot or something like that) and I've seen a few of the little shorts that they've produced. It felt like one of those.
It just seems bizarre and not very good. It seems to feel unpolished(probably not the best word) to me. It may be great. As of yet, I've never seen it.

I liked the first few episodes of On the Lot but then it turned into this American Idol thing and then I hated it, which is weird, since I love both Idol and film. Putting them both together had this kind of reverse peanut butter and chocolate effect. Disappointing.

The preview: "From the men that brought you The 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, and Superbad comes..." At this rate they'll have a fifty title list in about five years. They have all been pretty good though.
Hot Rod was funny though, don't get me wrong. Typical Andy Samberg comedy. It was great. I just think that a few things weighed it down, and kept it from being the classic it could have been. I still say go see it, or wait for the DVD.

So i watched David Lynch's newest film, Inland Empire yesterday and i have to say it's the most complicated film he's ever made. It's about 3 hours long and contains probably a total of about 40 minutes of coherent narrative (spread across 2 different stories). This is a movie im going to have watch another few times before i can get anything out of it. It's a got some really jarring filmmaking in it though and an outstanding performance by Laura Dern (how she didn't get a nomination for this is beyond me).
anyone who likes a good mindf*ck should check it out. it's classic Lynch taken to the next level.
But can anyone explain to me what this ones about? I have an idea, but i could be wrong.

his movies are like a big puzzle that you have to piece together. once it all comes together you see how brilliant it all is. a lot of the scenes people find jarring are basically to help convey emotion, he just does it in an unconventional way.
i love symbolism and your hardpressed to find more symbolism than in a David Lynch movie

if you didn't like his earlier works, Mullholland Drive or even the more straighforward stuff like Blue Velvet, i'd avoid this at all costs. It seems to me like Lynch made this solely for his hardcore fans. Basically 1/3 through the movie, it loses any type of structure, and most people will see as just a bunch of jumbled, unrelated scenes, but it kind of comes together in the end.

Scarlett Johansson to star in Frank Miller’s The Spirit
http://www.slashfilm.com/wp/wp-content/images/scarlettspirit.jpg
Scarlett Johansen is in final negotiations to star as the femme fatale in Frank Miller’s (Sin City, 300) big screen adaptation of Will Eisner’s The Spirit. Johansson has also signed on to star in Mary Queen of Scots and Into You, but who really cares?
Johansson will play a dangerous beauty named Silk N. Floss, a character that THR describes as “a sexy and intelligent secretary with a vindictive instinct that makes her the perfect accomplice to the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), an evil mastermind.” It appears that the character was created for the film adaptation and will probably be a combination of characters from the comic series.

But can anyone explain to me what this ones about? I have an idea, but i could be wrong.
Hard to answer that question.
Lynch is still playing around with split identity and subjective reality as in Mulholland Drive and Twin Peaks. A traumatic experience creates a disconnect from a character's true self; thus this character projects an idealized or hyper-real sense of themselves to make sense of the world around them.
Obviously, this is most apparent for Diane (Watts) in the fantasy of Camillia (Harring). And to a degree we can extend this to other heroines in Lynch's films. Unsurprisingly, "movies" (and their conventions) being rather iconic are the template used for this hyper-reality.
All these women are actresses or aspiring actresses, involved in what is, on the surface, standard Hollywood plotting. Your murder mystery, McGuffins, con games and the like. Lynch then inverts all this.
I saw Inland Empire in very much this light. The "film" within a film structure, Dern's mortality becoming somewhat suspect as the film proceeds (Wolf in the den), the rabbit family sequence contrasted with the prostitute's confession. Dern's emotional breakdown when reading the script about truth and what that means to us, to her.
Tell me what you took from it though and we could go into that a bit.
Somebody's gotta explain the appeal of this kind of movie to me.
How about simply interesting and thought provoking film making?

i went and bought it yesterday so hopefully i will get a chance to watch it again soon and things will be a bit more clear.
basically what i got from the film is that Laura Dern's character signs on to a film that is based off of a Polish film and is apparently cursed. the actresses who star in this film get trapped in the role, which is what happens to her halfway through INLAND EMPIRE. basically she works her way to the end of the film and eventually kills the man responsible for the curse and helps free the original Polish actress (the girl watching the tv) and reunites her with her family.
As for the dance montage at the end of the film, i think that Lynch just put that in as a thank you to his fans, it's full of easter eggs from his previous films.

'Superbad' Has Super Haul of $31 Million (http://ifanboy.com/mt/mt.cgi?__mode=view&_type=entry&id=2097&blog_id=1&saved_changes=1)
Sunday August 19 12:59 PM ET
"Superbad" was super good at the box office, proving that a no-name cast could hold its own amid A-list summer blockbusters.
The teen comedy from Sony, the misadventures of two high school buddies trying to score booze, took in $31.2 million to debut as the weekend's No. 1 movie, according to studio estimates Sunday.
"Superbad" knocked off the previous weekend's top flick, New Line's "Rush Hour 3," which slipped to second place with $21.8 million, raising its total to $88.2 million.
The Warner Bros. sci-fi tale "The Invasion," starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in an update of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," opened a weak No. 5 with $6 million.
"Superbad" maintains the pattern of producer Judd Apatow's earlier hits, "Knocked Up" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," which he directed. Apatow and his collaborators, including "Knocked Up" star and "Superbad" co-writer and co-star Seth Rogen, have a knack for packaging crude, R-rated humor with clever, authentic dialogue far smarter than what's normally seen in summer comedies.
Shot on a modest $20 million budget, "Superbad" had a slightly better debut than "Knocked Up," which opened in June with $30.7 million and went on become a $100 million hit.

I'd also like to give props to one thing in Superbad that I noticed. There's a character who doesn't drink, and for the first time in maybe ever, that's not the character's weakness. It isn't that they're scared, or timid, or just too uptight, it's just that they don't drink, and that doesn't ostracize the character or anything, and there's no preaching. That never happens, and I was glad to see it. I'm being vague so as not to ruin the movie by the way.

I just finished watching Party Monster. The cast list looked hilarious, and I thought it might be one of those movies that was so bad it was funny. Either that or it would come through and be good, I did love the club kids story. But no. The movie was awful. It ran up to being so bad its funny and kept going. Awful. Awful. Awful.

Not that I thought the movie was great, but it's not really a comedy...

Not that I thought the movie was great, but it's not really a comedy...That's not what I meant. Have you ever watched a movie that was so bad, it was laughable? Well that's what I thought this might turn out like, at the worst. But this passed that point and was just a bad movie. I just meant that I had low expectations, and it passed them at great lengths.

I just got home from Superbad. That definitely lived up to the hype. I don't think I stopped laughing from beginning to end. That's the first movie I've ever seen get a standing ovation without being over.

The special edition of Serenity was released today.
A two-disc Collector's Edition DVD of the film was announced for Region 1 release on August 21, 2007. According to Whedon, the excellent sales figures for the "Normal Edition" DVD allowed this release.[37] The DVD will include all of the once-Australian-exclusive bonus features, sans the Joss Whedon Q&A session filmed at Fox Studios in Sydney, and with new content including a DTS 5.1 surround track, a second commentary with Whedon, Nathan Fillion, Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau and Ron Glass, the R. Tam sessions (dubbed "Session 416"), and the Sci-Fi Inside: Serenity documentary.[38][39] Universal Pictures redesigned the film's official website to reflect the new DVD set.[40]
