The guys brought up an interesting point when they were talking about the Gears of War movie, the fact that it's basically a completely blank slate to build a plot on top of. You have Cole's thrashball career, how it ended, and how he got into the Gears. Possibly how Baird got so bitter. Dom's history and how he met Marcus. Then the biggest focus, Emergence Day and how Marcus played into it with the loss of his father, his trial, and his time in jail. I can't wait to see what they do with these endless loose ends.

Thoughts?

Theyre basically buying an group of fans and an asthetic. The visuals are gritty enough for some kind of hyper violent movie and come on we'll all at least look at the trailer to see what the hell they do with it.

let's face it movies and videogames don't mix. When you play the game your more focused on how to get to the next level or going online and trying to get more headshots, curbstomps etc. So why even try, well for those who bought the game may well just see the movie, this will be straight to dvd, or fizzle out, time wasted when they could of developed a videogame that really deserves a movie being made about it, Metal Gear Solid, still a long shot but storywise you can do allot with MGS, because when you play the game you actually watch an hours worth of cutscenes.

I think the real problem is that they're developed with the wrong motives driving them. Look at the movie with the closest physical setting to Gears I can think of, Children of Men. They nailed the entire atmosphere and had storytelling to match. If that kind of thought and production quality was put into a movie, instead of simply relying on the established fan base to carry it to a mediocre success, we wouldn't have such a negative feeling towards movies based on game licenses. I blame lazy producers.

I think those threads they hinted at in the game are better served being expanded upon in the inevitable sequels. I honestly think it's kind of dumb that a movie is being made. The game is a friggin action movie for crying out loud. That's partly what makes it a great action experience, the numerous homages to the super action/war genres. A movie would simply trivialize that greatness. And if that theme were to be transfered over to a film it wouldn't work.

I think you've got some strong points, but I think the track record of videogame-to-movie translations will really have a lot of people skeptical on this one. Who knows, maybe they'll prove us wrong, but until it actually comes out and is really good, I don't plan on getting my hopes up.
