Hey guys,

I recently downloaded HD Rez per Jeff's recommendation. Loving the game. Can't believe how ridiculously awesome / fun it is.

So:

Are there any other games like REZ, games (retro / recent) that fell through the crack and were forgotten, that any of you guys would unconditionally recommend, and hence, resurrect through the sheer power of your internet stardom? Not just any old game, but one that you think is so awesome that it is a sin in humanity's soul that they haven't played the game; that the fact your friends haven't played the game questions your faith in your friendship etc. Enjoy the hyperboles.

Love, love, love the show. It's the best part of my week. Don't go to law school.

Hey TRS dudes,

Do you guys watch anime or any animated feature films from Japan? I'm not talking about the anime crap like Pokemon. There are some amazing films such as the ones directed by Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Paprika) which I think Dan would like. I also recommend Jin-Roh, both Ghost in the Shell films as well as all the Miyazaki family films.

Feel free to PM me if you want some other recommendations. You guys seem to like a lot of stuff but anime seems to be ignored on the show. :)

Dinosaurs or aliens: which are cooler?

If a war broke out, and when it was over a great war video game was made, who would you want the groups of people in the war to be. (Think real life and kick-ass game) I'm thinking Canada and Australia since no one would expect it.

If you could only do one segment in the show, which would it be?

If you had to fight off a zombie horde with one weapon from TV or a movie (excluding a lightsaber), what would it be?

Mine would be a Phased Plasma Rifle in the 40 watt range. It's from the gun shop scene in the first Terminator movie. Even though you don't get to see it, it sounds badass.

A while ago I came across this post @ screenhead on the hardest novels to make into films (http://www.screenhead.com/reviews/the-unfilmables-a-list-of-the-hardest-novels-to-film/). I would add Dhalgren (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhalgren) to this list as someone also commented; it is probably my favorite sf novel, and the first that came to my mind to direct it for some reason was Michael Haneke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Haneke), though I can also picture a Richard Linklater/Scanner Darkly interpretation. Plus, there is already a Dhalgren soundtrack (http://www.notype.com/drones/cat.e/sine_005/).

So: choose a favorite novel (or graphic novel) that you think is "unfilmable" and name a director or creative team that might be up to the task.

Has TRS and podcasting in general become your-guys's day-jobs?
I know Dan has directing and Alex and Jeff are actors, but we all know these aren't always bill-paying jobs.

If it has become your day job (or hasn't) what is your day job?
or what was your worst and best day-job of the past?

p.s. 'Life of Pi' is an amazing read!

I don't think TRS pays the bills for them. Dan is a commercial director. Alex gets paid from Diggnation, no doubt. And Jeff acts in commercials but I doubt that pays the day to day/monthly bills.

I would like to know what Alex and Jeff do as a "daily job" to pay the rent. :)

Since Metal Gear Solid 4 is almost here, correct me if I am wrong, but Dan has never played a Metal Gear Solid game. MGS4 being the "BIG" PS3 game, I am sure you guys have to review it. I think it would be a good idea for Dan, and perhaps Alex (pretty sure Jeff played them all) should think about getting the Metal Gear Solid Essential collection which contains the first three MGS games.

I think it would be better to experience MGS4 having played the previous games only to really experience the "loose ends" that are being tied in, what is set to be "Snake's Final Mission".

Hi Rad People,

I just downloaded and installed (thanks to Digg) a branded version of the Miro Player from Revision 3 (http://revision3.com/content/miro).

http://mashable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/picture-9.png

I have used Miro before, and stopped using it, when after downloading all available Happy Tree Friends movies, I was unable to find anything else I liked.

After getting the latest Diggnation and TRS, I looked through the synopsis of other shows, and sure enough, discovered Internet Superstar and downloaded every episode. There is NO WAY I would have found this without the new Miro Player.

Top marks to all involved... pity you didn't advertise it more thoroughly (HINT).

Keep up the Rad work!

Cheers,

themacmeister.

What's your favorite theme in a film/show/game/book/comic?

By theme I mean like love, mortality, dehumanization, greed, lost innocence, man versus society, betrayal, rise and fall, etc.

I think rise and fall is always a very interesting one but I think the best thing to come across is moral questions. As in if a character should do something clearly wrong but that will achieve a good overall or seeing how far people are willing to go for self-preservation. Those are just really cool cause they always make me think wow, what would I actually do if I was in a impossible situation like that?!

I think the Man vs Himself aspect is the most intriguing. Self analysis causes not only the protagonist to question his motives, morals, and opinions but also causes the reader to examine himself. A sign of a good work of fiction is a piece that causes you to leave it wondering about the actions and thoughts of the characters and comparing them with your own.

Does the leak of GTA4, water down the large hit the first day could take. If you could download the whole version and have it beat before release, would it affect you?

Does this kind of mass release, not lend its self well to the Video game industry? Should these releases be a week early to stores? Don't you KNOW it's ging to get leaked if it goes to Sioux City, Iowa walmarts?

The leak of gta4 doesn't affect me, because i don't have a system to play it on. however, if i did and i was the kind of person that woudl bit torrent games there is no way in hell i'd pay for it.

luckily for the gaming industry I'm not.

not really lucky, it seems that even if you could... you wouldn't pay so they technically aren't loosing money from you.

that is my argument to people who say PC gaming is dieing because billions of dollars a year are lost to pirates... i say they don't intend to pay for games anyway, so technically the company isn't loosing that money, they wouldn't have gotten it anyway.

I second that. They say they lose money from pirates. But those people wouldn't buy the game anyhow. Those who really want something will pay for it. It's an age old excuse to say we lose money to pirates. It's like movies... they say they lose money to pirating... but they don't they are losing money to High en home theaters and so forth.

IMO, I could be wrong.

I said 'if i was the type' If i had an xbox360 or ps3, i'd be more than happy to buy the game.

But your argument stands semi-valid. I think there are people out there that, if pirating wasn't so simple, they'd buy the game instead of stealing it.

duly noted, and no offense was meant, I have in my time done my fair share of downloading against copyright, though as a student with no discernible income there was no way I could even pretend to afford to pay for some of the games yet still found a way to shell out for games that I really enjoyed.
since i have started working at the university full time I get much more satisfaction from buying my games, but I am so selective with which games I buy that it isn't a problem to afford all of them.

I had a conversation about this with someone not to long ago. when you're a student you download a ton of music because you can't afford it. However by downloading I think it creates a better customer out of you in a sense, because later in life you can buy music, You will enjoy the benefits of purchased music over pirated music. Without the downloading prior to buying you would have a much smaller range of music that you listen to, and thus creating a much smaller range of music that you now actually buy... I think it's very similar to games.

To the four RAD dudes,

so I got to thinking, you only get to answer one question at the end of each show. what would be the chances of maybe having an audio only show released later in the week where you go through viewer questions? kind like the 'forum questions' section that you have done in the show previously. I think it would go down quite well. (and would mean we'd get a little more of the RAD each week :D)

just a thought,

hope all's going well!!

Movie Questions for the gang and the forums:

1) Do you buy DVD's or rent?
I buy movies, so I can watch them when ever and how evermany times I want.

2) How do you feel about the Multi-relese of most dvd's, not talking about wide screen vs normal, like say 2-3 years ago you got the Indiana Jones box set of all 3 original moves and the 1 extra dvd. Along comes the new one, and there is a remastered version of the same movies, sold individually or as a box set. How do you feel about that?

I'm really feeling this situation as there are a few things I was willing to re-buy the remastered versions. But with Blu-ray the winner i'm really starting to look at how many times do I want to buy some movies.

lol. I think that's actually a push-in by Steve, besides, Alex is that much shorter than Jeff, the headbutt would have to be very accurately thrown, plus Alex's braincells aren't as susceptible to damage as Jeff's, Alex has been training them for years. I see Alex blocking the headbutt with the top of his head, causing more damage to Jeff.

I concede those points, but I'm now thinking the most likely scenario is an accidental clash of fists, leading to a patented TRS exploding punch, knocking both combatants out.

EDIT: Just remembered exploding punch is not activated unless all three presenters' fists make contact. Maybe Dan would intervene..

Not only do you guys laugh a lot on the show, but I also tend to find my self laughing out loud as well. So my question for the show is, what the funniest nerd/geek prank each of you has successfully (or unsuccessfully)?

Here is my office prank gone wrong ...

Normally the IT guys can get pretty bored and god knows how high you can get off soder fumes. Anyways, at the office when the IT guys would set up a new female employee's desk they would always put some clear scotch tape over the speaker in the ear piece. This would always result in the new female employee tracking down or calling the IT guys for some help. The IT guy always does some nerd magic and in mere seconds the phone problem is fixed.

So an new secretary shows up and she is an extremely attractive young woman who looks like she just finished having her second successful breast implant surgery. News of her arrival spreads through the office. The IT guys being ever so organized, they setup the front desk the day before and told the manager everything was ready. They now sit back and wait for the phone call about the broken phone. Ring Ring in the IT office. Jason, well lets call him Jason, having successfully completed this prank several times before get cocky and decides to say something impressive knowing that it is impossible to hear anything clearly on the pranked phone.

Speaker phone on, "hello IT, why yes, I would love to service you, but with all these plant cut backs you're just going to have to service yourself, although charging admission might generate some revenue."

Roar of laughter in the office ...

Silence ... <crickets!> ... then ...

"Jason what the hell did you say? Some asshole put tape Ms "Smith" phone and her fucking mouse is not working ... "

Well thats all we clearly heard before Jason scoped up the phone and turned into a puddle of flash as the barrage of profanity spilled out from phone. We never asked Jason about the rest of the conversation with the plant manager. It was also the last scotch tape prank in the plant office.

Sometimes pranking can be Hazardous to your employment.

BTW - I am not Jason, but I was in the office ... and even funnier was that I was the one that pranked Jason with scotch tape phone receiver!

I have a few questions regarding the fist punch explosion so prominently featured on TRS.

1. When did you each first discover your ability for the fist punch explosion?

2. Do you have any inadvertent or possibly premature explosions that have caused problems for you? Give an example.

On a side note, can each of you fist punch explode with other non-fist punching explosionists, or does it require two or more fist punch explosionists to work correctly.

Just wondering...Thanks!

Starcom

I have a question. I think I'll add to this deluge of inane interrogation...

The Totally Rad Show is an anomaly in entertainment. It's part of a new wave of television that functions apart from the trappings of traditional programming. You're broadcasting online; you aren't censored, the shows aren't always structured into rigid segments, and you answer only to advertisers as opposed to a gigantic parent broadcasting corporation.

Rev3, in my opinion, is analogous to the new wave of independent cinema in the 1970's. The rules (like those of the old movie studios) have been broken. You've proven (to me, at least) that there's more than one way to do a review show. You've explored the possibility of hosts actually digressing instead of insulting the intelligence of the viewer by boiling a review down into neat, clean sound bites. In essence, the old rules are out the fuggin' window because you answer only to Revision3. Like Scorsese, Coppola, and Lucas in their heyday, Rev3 is giving a metaphorical middle-finger to the tired ways of the past.

In light of all this... Do you think your show would be any different if it was on cable? Have any offers been made or entertained? And finally... What is it about internet television that interests you and how long do you think it will take for programs like yours to impact mainstream television?

Sorry for being longwinded... But hell; it's the internet. And the internet is serious business.

Scenario: You are a famous director (sorry Dan!) with a studio deal for one movie with a pre-established IP. The studio only has videogame licenses. Which videogame do you choose to direct and why?
Do you choose something with a very established story like Metal Gear Solid and try to adapt it or do you choose something like Left 4 Dead where you would have more freedom to do whatever? Don't worry about budget.

Dear Dan, Alex, and Jeff,

My best friend of well over 10 years, TJ just got engaged during the Superbowl halftime show today. Both he and his fiance, Erika, are huge fans of the show and it was because of him that I myself became a fan too. It would sure be awesome if his Idols of Radness would send him some congratulations. Also, I'd love some ideas for a truly unforgettably rad bachelor party. So guys, what one thing would you love to do with your best friends given that last chance?

This is a question I've long pondered...

Have you ever considered a music segment for the Totally Rad Show?! It would be the missing piece in the rad jigsaw! Could you list some of your favorite bands and/or albums of all-time?

I've been curious about this for some time now.

Thanks,

Well, it's true. I actually tried to say it in an unsarcastic way. It annoys me that ppl ask the same questions that the boys have already answered in the show. Like 2 of the questions at the Dolby show, one of which had been answered twice previously. Just saying, you have the chance to ask them something in a Q&A, come up with something original. Either way, I think people should be watching all the episodes anyway. Wouldn't have this happening if people did.

Or they can be like Anakin, and hope that by constantly asking the same question, they might be able to change a person's mind. Ex: Can I have ice cream for breakfast? every single morning...

I wasn't trying to dish anything. It's unusual to ask questions ( and this is not directed at you Jared ) about something you've not attempted to learn anything about, on your own.

I really wasn't trying to bitch you out, 'watch the show' is perfectly sound advice. I just used your post as a jumping off point, and referenced several other fans questions, emails, forum posts, along with yours, as my jumping off point for bitching. I only found out about SMOdcast a few months ago, and every time I was doing something online, I listened to it in the background, starting at the beginning. What I didn't do, was go to the SModcast forums and ask, " does this show have guests? ", or anything benign like that. I'd love to have a cache of unseen TRS episodes waiting for me. In the meantime, I wouldn't come to the 'net and say, " what's episode 25 about ? ".

You don' thave to read every single thread, I sure don't, ( wouldn't know it by my post count ), but you, or anyone else, posting in a thread that you haven't read, is silly. Again, not aimed at you, but asking anything on the internet when the answer is easy to find if you try, is silly.

As Heyseuss points out, the guys have talked about why they don't have a "music" part to the show. Iirc, it mostly boiled down to the fact that none of them felt they knew enough about music and the industry in order to talk about it in a meaningful/review-style way.

Hope that helps,

I find all the segments that have to do with the personal history of the TRS guys to be most fascinating....

There are a few questions that could be asked to discover more about the guys:

1) Most influential book you read growing up? (catcher in the rye for me)

2) Favorite board games (Monopoly, scattegories, balderdash, scrabble)

3) Favorite classic video game system and game (NES - Mike Tyson's Punchout / SNES - The Legend of Zelda / N64 - Goldeneye with friends Ocarina of Time by myself)

4) Most toys you collected as a kid (TMNT, Ghostbusters, Transformers etc....)

5) Favorite kids cartoon (transformers, TMNT, thundercats, X-men etc...)

Anyway I love the segments dealing with the past loves of the TRS guys.... Keep it up.

Here's a question I've been wondering. Do you think that the re-hashing of everything from our generation (TMNT, He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc.) is preventing the current generation from creating and latching on to their own new, original movies, comics, and T.V. shows? Are we forcing them to adopt our childhood as their own?

I have a comics question for Danny, but the others are welcome to chime in too.

Dan, as someone who doesn't like the 'capes and cowls' style of comics, and who also loves Asian cinema, have you ever had the fortune to read any of the manga by Koike and Kojima?

In particular stuff like LONE WOLF AND CUB, SAMURAI EXECUTIONER and LADY SNOWBLOOD.

That stuff is just sublime. And as far as I'm concerned PREACHER and LONE WOLF AND CUB are the two greatest comic book works of all time.

There's a lot of great movies and books that feature mentor characters (Obi-Wan, Mr. Miyagi, Morpheus, etc.). Sure, they're usually in hero's journey stories, but that's okay.

So, is there any particular mentor character that you've really admired and maybe wished that they could be a real-life mentor to you? And if so, is there a particular quote or piece of wisdom from that character that you aim to live by?

Dan has his PC set up to work in front of his couch so PC gaming is out for him. I could be mistaken, but aside from WoW Alex isn't really into PC gaming, or at least prefers console gaming for action games. Jeff was hosed by the company that sold him his PC (I predict Bad Karma is coming to those that sold him his PC and wouldn't fix it when it's clearly their fault) and that I know of still does not have a gaming PC. Is there any chance that TRS will be able to review a PC game any time soon?
Also, as I'm sure Danny knows, I've been around since the beginning of TRS, you guys just keep getting better. Thanks for the hours of great entertainment and guidance. :D

Reter Molyneux recently said that Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" had some interesting ideas to it that could be used in a video game. I think Fallout 3 feels a little like "The Road", with the whole Father/Son relationship and the setting of the whole game.

Are there any games/books/movies that feel have either directly or indirectly influenced another medium and is there any book/movie/game that you would like to see attempted in another medium?

not really lucky, it seems that even if you could... you wouldn't pay so they technically aren't loosing money from you.

that is my argument to people who say PC gaming is dieing because billions of dollars a year are lost to pirates... i say they don't intend to pay for games anyway, so technically the company isn't loosing that money, they wouldn't have gotten it anyway.
Also, they are still in possession of the source, so nothing is being taken away from them.

What are the real damages being done?

I'd argue that someone downloading music/movies/games is doing no harm to the industry, and in fact may be helping it through word of mouth, influence, etc...Especially the majority of musicians, who garner most of their revenue from live shows.

Now someone distributing copy written content, they may be infringing on sales by making material available that may have otherwise been purchased.

Didn't think this question would warrant its own post so here goes.

Are the daily episodes edited like the old weekly format or is the editing now spread out over a few more days? Reason I ask is I find it odd if the episodes are all put together over the weekend like the weekly format was there really shouldn't be a reason for the irregular and sporadic posting of the episodes. I mean if everything is done over the weekend then shouldn't the episodes be posted on a fairly regular schedule through out the rest of the week?

I think the sporadic or unpredictable nature of episode posting is more of a Rev3 thing than a TRS thing. It happened a few times before the format change too.
