Yeah, I reviewed video games professionally for a lot of years. Maybe we'll go into it at some point on the show. But I do agree that I should be judged on the substance of my opinion and not my background :)

It's a good thing that you restricted your thesis to only the first three in each franchise. Otherwise, the comparison would be almost vacuous. The Sonic franchise has hit on hard times these last few years. I think that as Sega no longer had viable console hardware, they no longer needed to maintain a flag-ship title like Sonic. However, Nintendo's hand held console dominance has insured a good home for Mario and his family.

After the first three titles in each franchise, the quality of the franchise is really tied to the success of the accompanying hardware.

Agreed. I tied it to the first three games, the core platformers, because after that there really is no contest. Mario made the jump to other game types and 3d worlds fairly well, Sonic, on the other hand, has not. As far as the first trilogies of each series, I'd hate to say it, but I'd have to go with Sonic, just for the sheer speed and "holy sh!t" factor you get when you play them the first time.

I'm also glad to know I'm not the only one that achievement spies :) Although I usually suck compared to all my friends because I spend too much darn time on less important things like essays for college and crap like that :)

Those XBOX 360 games don't seem to be dropping much. Still, $30 is better than $60. I bought GoW with a gift card. However, depending on how much online you play, it could be totally worth the full price. Unfortunatly, I have a horrible habit of getting owned when I go on XBOX live. So, I'm going to replay the game on a higher setting a few times before I try again. The game has a lot of replay value from what I've observed.

I have to say that even though I wasnt in your shoes I gurantee that I was just as pissed as you were. But now, look at how things have turned out. They say everything happens for a reason my friend and you have proven to everyone here on the world wide web that it is possible to scream "Damn the Man, Save the empire" or wait was that Ethan Emby on pot brownies, Anyway Congrats guys, and thank you very much for the show.

could design the ultimate rad console, based on all game console that are out so far. What hardware or software would you include, pick and merge, throw away or reconsider, to end up with the console that plays your awesomest games ever?

could choose which TV show to turn into a video game, which one would you pick? Perhaps a LOST game that makes no sense? A Heroes game where you have to save the cheerleader? Or possibly grow a group of friends you can't really trust to break out of Prison with? (a few examples).

I just saw the first comic book segment. And honestly, I don't think Watchmen was the best place to start Alex on comics. Not a horrible choice, but not the best either. What I would have Alex read:

Transmetropolitan or Preacher. I can see Alex really enjoying both of these books. I know people who have never read a comic in their life and have started with these and loved them. Alex seems like the kind of person that could really get into these.

Dan or Jeff if you guys have read either of these books, I was wondering what your thoughts were, and if you think Alex would enjoy them or not?

One thing that is blatantly obvious (to me, at least) is how modern attempts at Film Noir seem like cheap knock-offs of their old black-and-white counterparts.

Do you think modern color films will ever be able to replicate or surpass old Film Noir (With as little editing as possible. Not Sin City style.)?
If so, any ideas how? Maybe you have some recommendations for me.

I was recently visiting the new National Air and Space Museum Annex near Dulles airport near Washington, DC. In a dark corner of the space ship wing, not 30 yards from the space shuttle Enterprise, inside a glass case was the full-size model of the mother-ship from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind."
