I installed ubuntu and the screen was set to 640x400. It is the only choice listed when I try to change. Never used it before wondering what I can do to change its screen size.

i am new to Ubuntu but this might help. in the terminal type "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver -xorg" a new window should open up do as it says and you will soon run across the option to used diff resolutions.

Didn't work still 640x400. I'll keep searching the net to see if I can find a solution.

I'll just leave it the way it is for now.

you can install the ATI Binary driver from their website...it might change the resolution for you, if it doesn't, you can go and edit the file: /etc/X11/xorg.conf and where you see lines with 640x400, add the resolutions you want in the same format...just make sure your monitor supports them or X won't start, or if it does, it'll have issues. Thanks for trying to help. The pc I had it installed in is bad I believe started to randomly restart. Did it before but it stopped and started it again last night. I think I will use DSL livecd to just mess around and get use to until I get a working system to install it on.

When you reconfigured xorg... when you got to the part where it asked what types of resolutions you want, did you press spacebar to select the right one(s)? That's what I did to fix mine.
