Hey guys, I was over at a friends house last night, he lives in a building and when I was helping him throw the garbage out, we found two garbage bags full of comics still in individual bags with boards. They are all in good condition. What I wanted to know if anyone had herd of a series called: The Authority. The whole series was in the bag. There all in really good condition. My friend told me that he looked them up online and said that the first one is worth like $200 in change. Does anyone know if this is true, or can anyone point me in the right direction to find the value of these comics. There must have been at least 200 or more comics all together. Or if anyone just knows the values of these books off the top of their heads. I'll be trolling the forums all day from work so I'll keep my eyes on the thread. Thanks for your guys help.

Did you take them? I've heard mixed reviews on The Authority. I'm reading Grant Morrison's run and so far I like it. :)

Auhority #1-29 sold for $44.00 on Ebay (http://cgi.ebay.com/Authority-1-29-Volume-1-Ellis-Hitch-Millar-NM_W0QQitemZ130092670011QQcategoryZ35764QQssPageNa meZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem). Not 200 bucks, but not chump change.
Still, if you have them, they're worth reading. It's a very good series.

I'm not really sure. My friend knows that I'm into comics so he wouldn't let me touch them. He thought I would steal it or something. All I know is that it's called The Authority. He also have The Authority evolution or revolution. One of those. But I'm going to have to call him and see which one it is. Is this title big? I've never herd of it until last night.

I don't think it's those. Unless thats the original because the ones that I saw looked much older than those. Again, I need to harass my friend so I can see which ones he found. Also, Does anyone know if a 6-part miniseries called Vigilante is any good? He offered them to me and I told him that I would think about it. Anyone herd anything good about it?

That collection has the #1 issue you're talking about.
I've never read/heard of Vigilante.

The Ellis/Hitch run on The Authority are some of my favorite comics of all time. Millar's run was good too, but he made the characters so unlikeable that it pretty much ruined them as a franchise. I'd also recommend getting the full run of Ellis' Stormwatch as well.

It's a 6 part mini series. I need to read the review more. For some reason when I saw it, it just attracted me. I don't know why.

Look The Authority up on wikipedia and search for the covers. There's been no issue of The Authority that's worth 200 bucks to my knowledge.

Well, if you guys say so thats all I really need to know. I think my friend just found some weird shady site on the net that give out false random prices. Another thing... my friend mentioned something about if the comic is cgc rated. What does that mean? Is it some kind of company that declares the value of collectibles or something?

They judge the value and condition of comics. They are the devil. but if it is CGC graded, then its probably worth a whole lot more than that ebay auction, so your friend was probably right.

Well, I don't know if his is cgc graded, but I think that website mentioned that if it is cgc graded then it is worth $200. I think he might look into that. If it's even worth all the hassle. Oh, and why are they the devil?

If the book is CGC rated it will be encased in plastic and it will have a number score on the top of the book. The higher the number, the higher the value.

Either way. I still don't see this book being worth $200 even if it is CGC'd. Make sure he doesn't try to hose you.

It sounds like they would charge an arm and a leg to get it graded. If it's going to cost more to get it graded then the comic is worth then I think i'm going to advise my friend to pass it up.Well, I'm not going to buy it. lol. I don't even know if i want to read it. I think at most if he is going to sell it, I don't think it's going to be to me. He will probably try to sell it to someone online. Besides, he knows better than to try to hose me. I'll put the hurting on him lol.

If the book was in a garbage bag, chances are the book wouldn't grade well. If the book isn't in pristine condition, then "slabbing" it is a waste of time unless it's a golden or silver age book, or if the book is a historic event, like the first appearance of Wolverine. Your friend was probably looking at a GCC price guide site. He'd be better off looking up the books in Wizard.

The book was in a garbage bag, but all the comics that were in there were all in sleeves and had the back boards. So all the comics are in good condition. I'm sure a lot of them are in really good condition. Out of all of them I think that only one spider-man comic was severely bent out of shape. I'm just going to point my friend to this forum thread and tell him to do what he wants lol. Thanks a lot for your help guys. I appreciate it.
Getting a book graded costs $39 I believe. CGC does suck though because they're encouraging an unimportant aspect of the industry (the collector value/impulse)

The Authority (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Authority) was a HUGE series that premeired in 1999. To me, that is very, very recent. Since you haven't heard of it, I can only assume you are young and/or a new reader to comics.
That's good.
Although I do kind of feel the way I did a few years ago when an intern asked me if I had ever heard of "this movie called Ferris Bueller" because it was really funny.
There is no way that any issue of The Authority is worth $200. Even if it is slabbed and graded highly by CGC, it is only worth what you can find someone to pay for it, no matter what any price guide says. And I have a hard time believing you will find someone to do that.
Just so we're clear, iFanboy is very, strongly ANTI-CGC, ANTI-GRADING, ANTI-SLABBING, ANTI-SPECULATION.

I'm not that young (19) but I recently got back into comics so I had never herd of the series. But alot of people here seem to really like it so I guess I'll give it a read.

I can see slabbing your Hulk 181, Giant-Sized X-Men #1, or, more importantly, your Miracleman 15, because it is a really great way to preserve your book, especially if you plan to sell it one day, because in a certain sense it does act as a guarantee to the buyer that the book is quality. However, CGC graded books tend to be waaayyyyy overpriced. I don't know who's buying these rated books at these prices, but I've yet to meet one.

I think it usually tends to be people who aren't into comics, but just into collecting them for their retail value, not for their art or story. Mostly just rich people looking to get a little richer.

I think the reason behind most peoples hate for slabbing and cgc is because it removes the main point of a comic book.... to be read....

Yea, that is very true. Whats the point of having a great story if you can't read it. because its encased in plastic.

Give it read -- best thing I've read here yet. Enjoy it and the collectors can go do whatever. I hope you love it, and if it's good... send it to me! Just kidding, it is good. Just count you and your friend lucky to have stumbled on a pretty good series all collected from beginning to end, for free, and there it is, to give you reading pleasure.

If you ever want to know what people are really willing to pay for comics, just go to eBay.
But if it is the Warren Ellis Authority, keep it, cuz that's some good comics.

Yea, it's the Warren Ellis Authority. During my lunch break I went to midtown comics here in Grand Central and I spoke with another friend of mine there that works at the shop and he gave me the whole run around on the series and the series that came before it (redstorm, i think that was the name.) and the middle series (orbit, i think thats what it's called) with the cross over with the aliens character from the movies. A little confusing at first but I read some of it and it's really good. I'm going to go to my friends house and yoink the first couple issues.

I would also add eBay is NO judge of the true value of comics, and I bet prices fluctuate wildly for no good reason.
By accident, I found I had two copies of Avengers Annual #10 from way back, which is significant for many important reasons, many of which are actually accurately advertised on the cover, a rare thing as anyone hearing Ron knows. The cover is badly drawn, but the interior is perhaps Michael Golden's best artwork.
I checked the price on eBay for the price of this and...shock. $9.00?? Unwashed, heathen hordes, were they born in a barn? This is a perfect example of "Knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing."
I'll keep one copy and give one away to somebody who really wants it, who can really appreciate the value of it, for free.
phui on eBay.

Thats one of the main reasons I tend to stay away from eBay. Nothing on that site is an accurate value anything that is posted there. The only time eBay is handy is when I'm looking for old pc parts or very very old collectibles.

Ah, that's one of my all-time favorite books. Michael Golden's run on Micronauts 1-12 and his Rom covers are gold as well. Good times!

Some would argue that it's an extremely accurate barometer on value. An item's value is only equal to what people are willing to pay for it and that's exactly what eBay reflects.

Well I guess you can look at it that way as well. I just find that there are alot of things on ebay that are valuable but aren't going for much money like Drwally pointed out earlier in this thread. He mentioned the 10th Avenger annual. He knows it's important to the series, and he knows how much it should be worth, but it was like $9.00 when he checked on ebay. It's more of a shame that valuable things aren't priced the right way. It usually just goes by what is hot at the moment.

Then you start getting into the difference between financial value and personal/sentimental/artistic value.

I got a Giant Sized X-Men #1 on eBay about 3 years ago for less than a hundred bucks. It's in VG-F condition. Not perfect, but when I was a kid that was one of the 'holy grails' of modern comics, along with X-Men 94, Hulk 181, Cerebus #1...

I have two variants of the first issue of a B&W fantasy/superhero story written by David Quinn and drawn by the forgotten great Tim Vigil called Omega that came out around '86-'87 that you'd have to pry from my cold, dead fingers to get.
