Ok.. that's so old it shoudl jsut work... umm...

Here's an install guide for ati drivers for the last 3 versions of Ubuntu. (http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Installation_Guide)

I think that may be your best option since most poople got it working with the FGLX (or whatever the code is :P) drivers.

No problem, I'm trying to be more helpful than the "community" was for me.

Well at least you have searched, just make that clear in the post. Most of the admins and mods are alright but a lot of the users are tools.

The newest FGLRX drivers don't work for (I think) anything Radeon 9500 and under. I have a 9200 and have to either install an older FGLRX driver or use the open source ATI drivers ('ATI' in Ubuntu, I think... 'Radeon' in Arch... or maybe that's reversed? Been a while since I set that up).

I have no idea what your card is but my old 9200 can go up to 1024x768 with generic default video drivers in ubuntu so it may just be an issue with setting up the xorg.conf file correctly. Did you go in and add the resolution you want to use in the right spot? Did you make sure to add it in the correct colordepth part?

and apt-cache search reveals:

xserver-xorg-video-ati - X.Org X server -- ATI display driver

Install that, uninstall FGLRX/VESA/whatever you currently have installed then

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

and make sure to choose the ATI driver when given a list of video drivers and also make sure to select the resolutions you want when given a list of those.

Then restart X or restart, whichever you prefer. If the resolution isn't better (And you can't alter it) then I'm not entirely sure. ATI drivers always have had issues in linux. Maybe you could install the latest stable Feisty release? It seems to have simplified a lot of things, maybe that will be easier for you.
