What are your passions?
What do you really want to do with your lives? I'm not talking specifically career wise, but that can be a part of it. But what do you younger folk really want to do with your lives? Improve your selves? Improve the world around you? Just get by? (which can be tough enough.)
Basically: what do you want to be when you grow up?

I'm an entrepeneur intending to launch my own website which would be a magazine sort of site and make a living off of that through advertising. I also work in media a bit and hope to also work in radio/television more, along with my website. I can hope, can't I?

I want to 'be' a writer. I don't want to write novels (Simply because I am unable to write novel-length stories D: ) but collections of short stories and poetry. More so than just that, though, I want to write comic books. I draw and paint but have a long way to go before I would even consider calling myself decent though :P That is currently my main goal but there are so many ways to tell stories and I eventually want to be involved in them all. I daydream about organizing a group of artists, anything from musicians to photographers and painters and writers, together and just get everybody to help everybody else out. I don't know, I guess like a local band wants flyers designed or artwork for an album they are doing and the artists and photographers help them out with that. Then later on some people want to make a short film and the band lends their talents to the project. I want to lead or be a part of some sort of thing like that that allows for everyone to do what they want and have support from other artists both by lending a hand to the project and encouraging them to go through with it.
While I would really have to do is hunt around for a few people that have similar interests and start a project of some sort. Unfortunately I do not have the self esteem required for such a task! hahah.
Maybe one day @_@

this is a wonderful idea. I wish it was available when I was young and idealistic. Would have helped me and my friends a lot. We had a great place in rochester back in the eighties/nineties that was pretty good at this... but not with the internet as a resourse, connective tissue...
I really hope you pursue this. Sounds like a passion...
Unfortunately I do not have the self esteem required for such a task! hahah.
Yeah ya do. You had the balls to mention it on this thread. That's the first step toward saying it out loud to friends. Turns out friends wanna help, mention it to their other friends... etc, and shit just happens. Don't be too shy, It's a cool idea. Your friends will like it, if they are also creative, and send others with similar goals to you...

You put a sad face emoticon at the end there, but you should not have.
What those silly tests were telling you is that you need to blaze your own trail. I know you know that is true in a philosophical sense, but you can put it in practice in your real world. You just gotta find your passion, follow your bliss. Maybe you can write, illustrate, what you feel, how you are different, and remember on a planet populated by 7ish billion people, some decent percentage will pay you for your version of entertainment, thoughts, etc...
Think about what you spend your money on. Alternative bands, less than pop culture stuff... Someone (you know, people like you) spend money on those thing. Why can't you create something, by yourself or with other talented people, to make money offa that? And if your not a capitalist, consider it "sharing creativity" with legal tender as the intermediary. Pretty much gotta if you wanna buy a slushy at 7-11 every day or two.

I have notebooks full of software designs. Lots of ideas for a mobile, connected world. Unfortunately, anything I produce in the US at the moment would belong to my current employer. CURSE YOU DAMN H1B VISA!
I am going through the greencard process - so soon I can incorporate myself, and become my own boss. In the mean time, I have taken a job away from my passion - in marketing and sales (still on the tech side, but sales none the less) for a software company. I work with a number of great marketing and sales people, and have picked up more than an MBA could give me in terms of experience (though, I do*want* the MBA to formalise it).
But, passion isn't only about career. I work in a tech field, so sometimes I need to get away from all that. Today, it was weeding the lawn - manual labour, but when my grass starts looking like a show home in a months time, there is pride there. The other thing is food and cooking. I wanted to be a chef at one point, but decided that I didn't want to ruin a favourite activity by turning it into my day/night job. I also do stained glass work, and am about to turn one wall of the garage into a stained glass workshop.
Unfortunately sometimes the career is needed to fuel the passions, so these activities take a back seat to paying the bills :(

This is something I think about EVERY DAY. I have many different views/ideas on how I should live my life...
Career Wise:
I am currently in college working towards a degree in Computer Information Systems (Programming). I go to a community college where I plan on getting my associates degree. Then I want to transfer to another school and complete my bachelors degree. I may go as far as getting a masters.
The thing I want to do more then anything else in the world is to be my own boss. I want to create and develop my own software. Regardless, I'd be happy working for a company developing software.
I want to continue my education the rest of my life. Even if I take only one or two classes a year (after getting my degree), I want to continue learning new things. I may slowly work towards getting other degrees or simply take classes that interest me for my own personal enrichment.
How I Wish I Could Live My Life:
This is the hippy in me coming out...
Nobody should have to work. Everybody should live simple lives each day. Is this possible? No, but its a nice thought. We spend our how lives going to work, is that all were good for? At least I'll have a job doing something I love but damn it, why can't I walk up and down the boardwalk and lay on the beach all day?! Throw a house on the beach, give me a laptop and a sweet highspeed connection and I'm set. LOL

Be inspired, but not intimidated...Sitting in one of my notebooks is a design inspired by Van Gogh's "Lillies" ... I envisage a piece made in cathedral glass about 3x4" in size. travelling through Paris last year (Musee D'Orsay especially) was an inspiration.
Pete has beautiful work on display. Not intimidating - especially when you know what goes into producing art like that, but definately inspiring.
Its funny - the teacher I had said she got a ratio of something like 10:1 women to men in her classes. Most men had some technical background (engineers, scientists, etc), and ran rings around the women in terms of design, aesthetics, and capabilities in stained glass (technically it is lead lighting). Must just be an artform we are adept at. On the other hand, she also said women where far better at "slumping" glass, and could pick up on the combinations that worked in fused art glass. Personally, I would love to try blowing glass - a trip to Dale Chihuly's studio (http://www.chihuly.com/) in Seattle was a rare honour (thanks Microsoft :) ).

Don't put any stock in those tests. Back in middle school I took those tests and the results said I should be a forest ranger. My theory is that those tests probably take into account job fields that need people and make recommendations that may not be appropriate.
My first passion was technical theatre. I really enjoyed working on lighting design and set design. But, turned out I couldn't get past my fear of heights in order to be effective. I fought through some near panic attacks up on ladders and catwalks, but in the end I gave it up to be happier. Stage and production management became my new passion. That worked for while, but I ended up leaving that too.
A little older now, I just started a new career all over again in technical writing. I'm passionate about writing and technology so this turned out to be a good move.
I guess the point of my whole post is that as far as careers and passions go, don't expect the same thing to get you going for your whole life. You'll change as you discover new things.
Music is also a passion of mine. A couple months ago I started playing mandolin and I love it. Won't ever be more than a hobby, but I really enjoy it.

I have an off-and-on passion with web design. When I get started with a new project, I'll get really into it and think only in color and px's. Then after I'm done, I won't feel like designing and I'll take a break for a while.

I just want to do something creative that people can look at and say "hey thats cool" and maybe even inspire other people to do cool things to.

-being an actor or director
-making programs to make people's lives easier
I'd also like to see all 50 states by the time i'm 50, but i'm currently way behind.

Most probably 20. Born in Colorado, lived in: New York, New Jersey, Virginia, and Missouri. Also, the state of New South Wales, Australia.
Travelled through or visited: (USA) Pensylvania, Illinois, ohio, kansas, oklahoma, texas, utah, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, california, Hawaii.
Out side USA: Tahiti, Bahamas, Fiji, New Zealand, Australia. Canada.
Wow. Now that I list it all in one post, I'm really impressed with myself. :D

Oh, I know your are, but anyone can read this thread. Personally, I think that movie should be rated 'PG' instead of 'x' or "nc17' or whatever. Adult parents of young adults should watch it together. It would be slightly embarrasing, but iot deals with the realities of adult sexuality... something young adults should learn early. Instead of through Pron, where fetishes and subjugation are held high as how to have intimate relations.
Fantasy is fine, as is fetish, oddity, etc...but only if all parties involved are 100% in to it.

Well, There something to the opinion that if you didn't want things made public on a forum you shouldn't post it.
However, there are gray areas. For example, as a professor, I'm a semi-public figure and have to maintain an online existence professionally. I also have a website dedicated to family pictures for other family members. Neither of which I want posted here.
rabidbadger
04-06-2007, 01:24 AM
Yeah, I agree. As far as I am concerned everything posted every and any where is fair game. Just gotta google the right thing and it's there. Not that I would post anything I find around a forum, but if you put it online, you might as well have shouted it out from a soapbox at Central Park. Sure. Only a few might here you when you do it, but the echo goes on forever.
If it's not specifically a password protected, friends only, site... than forget about it. Doesn't mean your cyber friends should post it against your wishes, though.

Lonleygirl? Is that you?
How many times you gonna change your av in a day. And none of the photos are you. If I wanted to see the kids I'd ask to see your wallet...
Hey, there's an idea for a website...

My immidiate goals are the following: coach another winning soccer team this summer for my cousin, stating working within the public art sector in my city trying to lobby the gov't for more money, starting a successful online tv site, going back to school for 5 classes to get a second degree in Poli Sci.
Future Goals: lead my website to a point where it is very successful and either sell it or continue to grow, have enough money to buy what I want and not have to ever worry about money, start a non-profit organization based on the idea to raise money and bring together world-wide knowledge in order to increase space technology and travel as a world wide effort, not just country by country (don't you think space should be something the world does together? not just one country?), and finally, I'd LOVE to run a political campaign... maybe a couple, working my way up to a bigger campaign over time.

Me, I am a huge HUGE HUGE technology geek. Anything and everything about gadgets, the internet, computers, design (graphic, web...) etc. I am also studying to be an industrial designer (product design) and would love to work for Apple designing Apple products :D
I'm also a Web 2.0 addict, and am on just about every website (http://claimID.com/Universal) out there.
I would mention all of my interests, but I would probably run out of room.

Man I would love to do Jury duty... on a real juicy case, anyway. Been called twice. First time they got 12 before they got to me. (Alphabetical, so maybe you should change your name ;) ) The second time was a civil case about a guy supposedly getting screwed over by a hospital. My Dad had just died from supposed hospital negligence, so they kicked me off...

The quickest way to take over the world is to start a religion that seems like it could be possible and might be real. But in reality just a load of bullshit but only the creator knows that. :D

I got called for jury duty. In massachusetts you get one deferral no questions asked. Then you have to go.
I wouldn't have minded sitting on a jury, but they ended up dismissing the whole jury pool after a couple hours. No jury cases that day. Everyone either pled out or didn't show up.
Though I did come down with bronchitis two days after I sat in the jury room. Lasted almost two weeks and it was the sickest I have been in at least 6-7 years.

Here from the date you first go you have to go back every day for 2 weeks to see if you are on a jury or something like.

Massachusetts instituted a new rule saying that if you don't get picked for a jury then you are done on day one. If you get picked for a jury, then you are on the hook for the duration of the trial. They call it one trial, one day.
