View Full Version : Pixel Perfect Episode 26: Photoshop CS3 [Discussion]
Photoshop CS3 is out and there are so many new features and changes! Bert scratches the surface by showing off the new tools interface, non-destructive filters, and Martin Sargent. Martin Sargent?? Well, you'll have to watch for yourself.

the new filter management seems like such an obvious improvement yet i never thought about that before. what a great way to improve a pretty solid product! looking forward to getting hands-on with it eventually... :)

So, why is that special layer filter even an option? Why would anyone not want to convert an image to that and use it? There must be some disadvantage to it if they made it a choice. So, what's the disadvantage to it?

My guess is that the smart filter thing is not compatible with CS2 or below so you have to turn it on yourself and it gives you that warning that these changes won't be available in previous versions.

I like the new CS3 but I just can't wait for the extended version. If the animation features in CS3 extended are as good as they look in the product tour, then I should be creating Flash-style animations without going through the trouble of learning complicated Flash.

I got Creative Suite the other week.
The advantage of having the non destructive filters is: Say you just spent hours and hours on an image and you customer liked it except for one small thing which was created with a filter. Without that option you would have to recreate the image again, but instead you can just open the filters layer and remove it. Excellent feature and one I have been waiting for, for a long time.

Well, I have'nt used CS3 yet, but as a programmer i can tell you, that non-destructive stuff uses more CPU (processing power) or memory or both. How big the drain on cpu and/or memory is, depends on the methods they used, but it's safe to say, that you'll loose performance somewhere.
