View Full Version : Survey: I need to find out the political orientation of Diggers

Hi all.

I want to do a quick survey of Digg users (I'm guessing Diggnation listeners tend to use digg) on their political orientation.

I have a strong feeling that most diggers are left-wing minded (i.e. they dislike the current bush administration), however I may be wrong.

This poll is private, so vote away. :)

Digg the story here: http://digg.com/political_opinion/Survey_the_political_orientation_of_diggers

No, I think you are correct...Most diggers are liberal...Best way to see this is to check out comments on political stories.

Maybe digg users just aren't mentally retarded.

This question in this thread isn't a proper gauge on one's political beliefs. If you were to ask me Republican or Democrat, I would say Republican. Now, if you ask me if I'm happy with the current administration or not is a completely different question. Just because one may like or dislike the current administration does not reveal their political orientation.

This thread will quickly, QUICKLY get out of hand. It's just a fact.

So, let me just say... liberal, progressive, conservative, fundamentalist... WHATEVER you are, you're gonna start arguing in this thread ;)

So, keep it civil. Cuz seriously, this thread just has "LOCK ME! LOCK ME!" written alllll over it. I mean this has nothing to do with diggnation hehe.

(fwiw, I'm a bleeding heart, progressive, liberal Democrat. You sure as shit know if this was anti-democrat I woulda locked it right off hahahahahahaha!)

Dont think that's a very fair poll - it'd be better to ask people which party they identify with and list the major political parties (assuming your going for american politics). I know several republicans that disagree with the bush administration but are still conservative for example.

/edit: I consider myself to be a liberal though.

I recommend to sticking to polls about favorite colors, candy, porn stars, or ice cream flavor. This is just too dangerous, I'm scared.

I'm a bleeding-heart liberal with just one conservative stance (I'm pro-life), but even when I was much more conservative, I still disliked this administration. Regardless of someone's political orientation, it's possible to dislike those in your own party. Just because I'm a white female does not mean I will like all other whites and dislike men. Just because I'm a liberal democrat does not automatically mean I will dislike (witha passion) Bush & Co., though I do. Many conservatives and republicans out there severely dislike B&C, and some I've known have been so angry that they've changed views to liberal just to disassociate.

A better title for this poll would be, "Do you like the current administration?" or, if you want to know orientation, to ask that, and offer, at the least: Liberal Democrat, Conservative Democrat, Conservative Republican, Liberal Republican, Independent, Green, and Libertarian.

But you can not get someone's political orientation on their opinions of an administration.

I'd like to think that the youngun's here would like to show their maturity by being civil, even if disagreeing, and that the oldies would want to set a good example by not arguing and flaming. As long as any potential flame wars are stopped right away, this need not be a threat doomed to be locked.

I agree with Kowgod, this wasn't the best way to ask the question. I might rephrase it & do this again in a month.

As far as the point of relevancy goes, this forum is the best way to connect with diggers that there is, unfortunately. I can't just ask people to digg a story if they don't like bush, can I?

To be totally honest, I may have underestimated things. I seriously thought by now this would have turned into a flamefest haha. I almost feel like instigating something ;)

Ah well. Just remember, Kowgod for Prez in 2016!

Believe in small federal government. Not pro big business. Big pro civil rights. Not a fan of our president, but Kerry scared me more. Wish we hadn't went to Iraqi, but don't think we can just pack up and come home. I think China is our biggest threat. I disagree with free trade, out sourcing and guest workers. I am for border security and enforcing immigration laws. I think to many people are in jail because of drugs use. Being a Republican, Catholic freemason is not easy.

A better poll would have been:

Republican who likes the Bush Administration

Republican who does not like the Bush Administration

Democrat who does not like the Bush Administration

Democrat who likes the Bush Administration [sic]

I am not going to discuss my affliations or opinion of the administration, but as someone who often discusses politics there is something to keep in mind about political questions. You must be specific and consistent in your questions.

In the proposed poll question above you have made it a Republican vs. Liberal question. In this case it would be better to ask it in terms of Republican vs. Democrat OR Liberal vs. Conservative. One is about political affliation and one is about political philosophy. There are conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans.

Not to over-emphasize my point, but most of us would not accept such imprecise language in regards to out favorite geeks topics so please give the same respect to politics. Often the bad type of politics arguments arise out just this sort of problem.

I completely missed that one. From thinking of the idea, to writing it out, all the way to submitting the idea, the word Democrat never crossed my mind once. Nice job.

I am active duty military, I am special ops, and I am a libertarian. I do not like this administration. I have trouble supporting stupidity and those who wish to restrict the rights and freedoms that I joined the military to defend.

That's why after more than 10 years of honest, loyal service, I am getting out of the military next August.

Supporting the Troops does not mean supporting the war.

We could use some one like you in New Hampshire.

Once I get up there I'd like to start a local militia. We could use some people with prior military training.

To really be completely accurate, I think one should take in to consideration ALL points of the political spectrum. Like for me, for example, I wouldn't be able to vote on a poll that was:
[R] pro bush
[R] anti bush
[D] pro bush
[D] anti bush

I did enjoy a long run as a democrat until earlier this year I realized that partisanship is; 1-Tearing the US apart, and 2-Not what this country was designed for.
It enrages me thatour senators and Representatives would rather vote along party lines than actually vote for what's obviously good for this country.
After realizing this, I also realized I was Independant, and after a while more I came to the realization that I'm centrist (neither liberal, nor conservative).
...but that's just me.

And no, i do not like the current Bush administration... and for that matter, i never have.

I think that the title of the poll making an incorrect assumption. I think it is possible for someone to approve or disapprove of the current administartion regardless of political afflilation. While it's natural to see people line-up by political orientation. It is by no means consistant. Many people, both conservative and liberal, disagree with current U.S. Bush administration. They do so for reasons other than mere political leaning.

Well said and I would fully agree (while I did answer the poll). People assume that because people are against the current administration that not only makes them liberal, but it means that they don't agree with anything that the current administration has done.

Political topics are always heated and often times on digg when they do arise by and large the subjects are polluted with people doing nothing more than tossing in their uninformed opinion rather than researching the topic and stating an informed one. Now I'm not saying that all of them follow this lead, but seriously, the vast majority of comments are not only unfounded, but are in fact propaganda from the other wing.

Regardless who is running the show here, the world is an ugly place and as much as people hate to hear it, we have never been the good guys. That truly is the bottom line and unless you can get American’s to give up the excess that many of us enjoy it will never change.
