I'm looking for a serious web hosting company, but it's a jungle out there. On one site company A is praised and on another site it's the most hated hosting company in the world... So I just wanted to hear what you guys (and gals) here has to say about it, any recommendations?

I will be hosting at least 4-5 websites and I'm looking at shared servers since I can't afford a dedicated. Around $20 a month or so maybe.

Cheers!

I have had good luck with my free 3 year 1and1 host, but that just ended and will change to micfo.com because of the Fantastico one click install of things like phpbb and joomla.

If you think you are gonna get huge traffic my friend owns bluetower, and one of his clients is ebaums world. So if he can handle that he can handle anything...

Dreamhost

You can find coupon online for 97 dollars off your first year. Making it around 3/4 bucks a month for 1.6 TB of bandwith and 140GB of disk space the offer unlimited domains etc

I use Dreamhost for my site. It's cheap, but you get what you pay for. The best hosting I've used so far is Site5 (http://www.site5.com/).

I would personally recommend ReadySetConnect. (http://www.readysetconnect.com/?chf)

I've used them for over 3 years now, and they have been pretty solid. They're a pretty easy company to deal with. Great people, and great support team.

I'm going to jump into this thread also. I'm looking for a hosting company which will suit a video website similar to revision3.com in terms of amount of data, etc. I need something with a high montly transfer amount, high mbps bandwidth and enough storage but not alot to begin. Also, is a dedicated server something that you would say is a "must" for a site running a lot of videos?

MediaTemple (http://mediatemple.net) perhaps? Or what about CacheFly (http://cachefly.com)?

Thanks, Mediatemple and dreamhost look promising so far.

Any body have any comments on "Mosso"?

UneasySilence (http://uneastsilence.com) uses them - they seem expensive though.

Does anyone have any recommendations on web hosting companies that have reseller programs?

I have one recommendation so far which is RapidHost/viaVerio. I'm talking with them about pricing and services now.

But I thought maybe someone here might have used a company and have some first-hand input.

I'm going to be building and hosting a few sites but have no interest in the having my own servers. Sort of branching out into a home based business. Given the area I live I'm not sure having my own web servers at home will not be practical.

Thanks

Like I said above, my vidpost host is bluetower, and they have a reseller program. (http://www.bluetowerhosting.com/reseller.htm) Don't know how it compares because, well, I don't know what it is...

I currently use Vizaweb, but realy need a host that has Java App Server (Apache/Tomcat or WebSphere, Weblogic, JBoss, etc). Unfortunately, most hosts are great if you want to host you blog or use a PHP loader like CPanel or Fantastico, but don't have the ability to load up your own code (beyond HTML, CSS, etc).

So, as an aside ... if anyone can recommend a Java App Server host without needing to go to private colo hosting, I'd appreciate it :)
