Well this post is especially for Kevin and Dan,

The next time you guys are on Diggnation, I recommend you guys try Asahi Beer from Japan.
When I traveled to Tokyo last December, that beer was the main stuff they were pushing and dudes were quenching! Since I wanted to congratulate you guys on Diggnation 1yr Anniversary Show, even though I am a little late.
Asahi, pronounced ‘A-sa-hee’, means ‘Rising Sun’, and you guys know that Diggnation is the Rising Sun. With a little imagination, the possibilities are endless, exactly what you guys did!

So the next time you guys are on the show, don’t forget my post and try to get them Asahi beers.

As for the rest of the readers drinking now..drink responsibly!

You might want to check out the Diggnation Address (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=524) thread. Be aware that shipping alcohol can be an issue, so check with FedEx/UPS first (I think USPS is a no go for that sort of package anyway).

Did you find a recipe or make it up. You have to be careful about brewing with honey because different types of honey can do funky things while they ferment.

I wouldn't use more than a pound of honey per 5-gallon batch.

Pound of honey per 5 gallon..... For some reason that sounds high to me, for beer anyway. But I haven't really bothered with beer. Let us all know how it turns out!

I do brew some good old country wine, true Southern style. I'll probably send Alex a bottle, not sure if Kevin drinks wine. I know Alex and Heather do on Ctrlaltchicken.

Notice I said "not more than". The character of the beer will be significantly effected by that much honey. Franky, I'm not sure why you would even bother with honey beer. Honey doesn't really add anything interesting.

Oddly enough, the address thread evolved into how to mail homebrew beer, so check what we discussed there.

And. It is soooo odd that you are making a honey beer. My latest vidcast that I am editing this week is a honey wheat beer that we made for our friends wedding. part one should be up by the end of the weekend. You can check out our first six podcasts through iTunes:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=172851077

or on the website: (click on "homebrew")

http://www.swillburgbrewery.com/

Let us know how it comes out.

Have you made beer before? It is much fun, and, if you buy the more expensive store bought beers, much cheaper in the long run.

I'll be sending the Diggnation guys a sampler pack once we have enough beer that we don't drink immediately. :D

Accept, I tend to spend as much as much as $40 for a 5-gallon batch. Hardly a savings if you're used to drinking Bud.

I've never tried a honey beer. Will give it ago one day. If you got some extra honey around make some mead.

As for shipping, I'd definately go with like an overnight or 2 day ship. Less time its out in the world, less time it has to be screwed over.

and the other one the same company makes is strongbow, thats why the guy has a bow.

Its not beer, its cider, and its the only thing better then beer if you ask me. On the other hand, woodpecker is about the worse one you can find. Strongbow is much better, and if you can get Scrumpy Jack, well then youre in for the real deal.

Hard Cider is not beer. Not that there is anything wrong with Hard Cider either ... but Strongbow/Woodpecker are pretty generic hard ciders, and you can get much better "microbrew" ciders ... and WoodChuck is one of the better microbrews.

Similar names, but completely different flavour. I am a fan of the Woodchuck Granny Smith (http://www.bevmo.com/productinfo.asp?sku=00000021675&). Nice alternative to drinking beer - especially ice cold over summer.

Woodchuck also has a pear cider variety. Look for a variety twelve pack. It has all of their varieties. Dark & Dry (amazing), Amber (standard hard cider, very good), Granny Smith (sweet and tart, tastes a bit like what would happen if Pez made an alcohol beverage) and Pear (also sweet, but not too tart).

What I can't my mind around in Harry Potter is the Butter Beer. WTF is that! I mean, some cultures fermented horse milk but cows milk is mostly unfermentable by brewers yeast. That means mold or bacteria. Maybe it's sort of a yogurty cheesy drink. In an case ,it sounds vile.

Sorry dude, Kevin has always been down on Belgian styles that aren't weren't wheat based. I think he expects his beer to taste like beer. Piraat is like 10% alcohol though. Of course, 10% isn't even twice alcohol content of the Northwestern American pale ales that Alex favors.

Forgive me if I am breaking forum rules, but I only browsed for a few minutes after joining and needed to get this suggestion out there!

Everyone, as well as Kevin and Alex, need to try -- Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy --. Yes, yes -- it is Lemonade flavored beer and I thought, "this is gonna suck." But, I am a fan of Leinies, so I tried it. Frickin' awesome beer! When it gets nice and warm like it has been here in Minnesota, it tastes like a million dollars!

So grab some Summer Shandy for the show, and you'll be sold!

A shandy is something you can order in just about any pub in Australia ... Lemonade (7up/Sprite) and Beer. OK, its a girlie drink - an OLD girlie drink. The sort of thing my nan drinks :) ... but, its actually pretty refereshing when its hot ;)

Since this is a summer beer thread, its a good chance to share one of the best beer commercials I have seen in ages.

Most brew-pubs that know what it is will serve you a "shandy".

There's also a drink called a "Snake bite" that is hard cider mixed with Pale Ale.

I gravitate toward colder lagers in the summer. However, as most places serve their beer ice cold, it's a moot point.

I also like a lighter beer in summer ... not a "domestic" beer, but something like a Corona (yeah -even with the lime), an IPA, or similar. Newcastle is as heavy as I go during hot weather.

, an IPA, or similar.

IPA hah! Can you find a bona-fide IPA through commercial channels? Most commercially available IPA's are misnamed ordinary Pale Ales.

India Pale Ale (IPA) was the name of the style of brew sent to the British Troops in India to keep them docile. The beer wasn't actually made in India. You couldn't make beer in equatorial countries until the onset of modern refrigeration. Brewing yeast gets a little funky when the mercury goes higher than 75 degrees F. In any case, the IPA had to be both higher gravity and heavily hopped in order to endure the trip to India from England. The jostling in the ships hold would keep the yeast in suspension longer then normal, this would result in a higher rate of alcohol conversion than normal Pale Ale. The beer would often take on an oaken flavor from the oak casks it was aged in.

The result is a very woody, bitter beer with a pretty heavy punch. Most bars that serve it find that people normally only take one or two before they quit.

It's not what we call a "session beer."

The beer is expensive to brew and it most be aged a bit so it is expensive to store. Then people don't drink very much of it. It's just not a good marketing choice.

Therfore, most commercial IPAs are just slightly hoppier Pale Ales.

I'm a hop-head. IPA is one of my favorite styles. Although, A great APA (american Pale ale) is also a winner. American pales (like Seirra Nevada Pale Ale or Anchor Liberty Ale) are delivery systems for world class Pacific Northwest Hops like Cascade and Willamette. These beers are heavy with hop fragrance when they're fresh. A good Pale Ale hopped with Cascade aroma is better than dozen roses in your face as far as I'm concerned.

British Pale ales (like Bass Ale - the classic 'Impostor' Pale Ale) are pretty hoppy, but much less fragrant.

Damn, now I'm thirsty.

Those wine geeks have nothing on a real beer geek...

Those wine geeks have nothing on a real beer geek...I am a fan of Sierra Nevada, but like a Corona - I have to be in the mood for it. Love it with seafood (food and beer pairings?)

As for wine geeks ... I spent last Saturday going winery to winery in the NY Finger Lakes area. Its a great way to spend the day. Had some utter UTTER crap - but found some gems in there as well. (Cobblestone Farm Winery (http://www.cobblestonefarmwinery.com/) has a magnificent Vignoles - sweeter than I normally like, almost muscat in quality, but outstanding). Goosewatch Winery
(http://www.goosewatch.com/) has some sickly sweet "cooler" style fortified wines (ie fruit brandies), but they also have a White Port - and again, it is outstanding.

Whats the point? I like beer, I like wine. I really like going to different wineries. Unfortunately, breweries tend not to be side by side, so its a lot harder to do a microbrewery tour.

Sorry - slight diversion. but still alcohol related.

Back to summer beers. Go to Outback Steakhouse ... they now have REAL Aussie beers, like Coopers, and Tooheys Draught. Finally, a realisation that Fosters is NOT Ausrtalian for beer.

Funny enough, we went to the American side of the falls on Friday. We had only ever done the Canadian side, so that was a different view (but we did have our passports in case we wanted to cross the bridge).

Back on topic, I had a Sierra Nevada with my prime rib at the restaurant we had dinner at. It also went well with the stuffed sole fillet that my wife shared with me.

Because I enjoy German style wheat beers, I really enjoy Leinies. You can join their free "club" on their website, and I actually get their newsletter via mail every quarter.

Anyway, as part of this club, I got to vote on naming the beer -- I liked the name "Lakehouse Lemon" myself -- for Summer Shandy doesn't perfectly fit the taste of this beer. I thought -- yeah, great, another sugar coated malt liquor. However, this is much more subtle -- It's much like the lemon was concentrated, then just "hinted" into the beer. It is very refreshing, and I cannot wait for the 1st 90 degree day to drink 12 of these!

Isn't Franziskaner the name of a German Speed Skater chick in a previous Olympics? I remember her posing for a picture in body paint instead of her skating attire. Very hot. The only thing that seperated her from the hottest model was her strong and healthy thighs. Mmmmm. Just asking.

what are you all going on about? skunker? south africa? naked skater?

Franziskaner is a Munich Weissbier, which means its a wheat beer... Its really old school form like the 14th century originally and it kicks ass. Unlike lagers, it has both ethyl and methyl alcohol, which some people say makes for a worst hangover then other beers, but i really think its the smoothes, most refreshing, less hangovery beer in the world. Try it out guys, it apparently comming to the US this summer.

Love this beer, one of my favorites at least as far as Hef's go. I second the Lost Coast statement, although as I've been going to a lot of specialty beer bars lately I've noticed that the ole Great White is almost like the Budweiser of the upper tier of beers.

Personally, some of my faves happen to be Rogue, Ska, and Nimbus Brewing. Well really only Nimbus because it's brewed right here in hot as hell Tucson and tastes good on a hot day :) Cheers!

AussieRogueThe only place in the US I have ever seen a Tooheys, was a bottle of Tooheys Draught at the Outback Steakhouse. I am yet to see it in any of my regular "import special" haunts (Beverages and More (BevMo), Total Wine, CostPlus, or WholeFoods). On the up side - I am seeing Coopers (Yellow, Green, and Red) more often, and I believe that BlueTongue (a microbrew out of Newcastle) is going to be imported (because they are owned by one of the wineries that exports to the USA - I just hope they also export their Ginger Beer ... that is awesome).

In any case, I don't think the boys could handle an Aussie beer. If they are pissed after two local brews, an Aussie brew would floor them before they even start the show ;)

Disclaimer: Yeah, yeah. I am an Aussie living in the US (NC). But most of you knew that already right?

Don't you mean Fosters? Since its Australian for beer and all?[/joke]Fosters - Californian for Chicken? (Love the Foster Farms chciken ads :) )

Fosters is an imported beer - FROM CANADA! (brewed under licence by Molsen). If you get a chance, try Fosters Special Bitter (something I actually used to drink back home) - comes in a green can (and is available in the US) - its not bad. Much better than Fosters Lager.

Yep. An Australian "light beer" (low alcohol - not low carbs) is roughtly equivalent to the average US beer. Regular Aussie beer is NOT as potent as the Unibroue (Quebec? Montreal??) Canadian brews though - man, at 8% or more, those have a kick and a half.

8% or more? What is the most beer has 12% or 16% I don't drink beer, so I don't really know. I look at it like this if it has less than 40% don't touch the stuff. 90% is prefered though.....:D

The only place in the US I have ever seen a Tooheys, was a bottle of Tooheys Draught at the Outback Steakhouse. I am yet to see it in any of my regular "import special" haunts (Beverages and More (BevMo), Total Wine, CostPlus, or WholeFoods).

Dude! I wish I coulda met you when you were in town! I woulda taken you to the store "beers of the world" here in Rochester. (sorry, no website anymore). They are basically a wharehouse store of beer, think Costco, Sams's Club, with nothing but beer, beer making supplies, and a little corner with exotic soda pop. Every country has their own aisle. Place is AMAZING!

When making my podcast, we filmed some stuff there. (the infamous Fausto's family owns the place.) I should slap some outtakes on the web. I did a whole pan up and down all the aises thang...

Australia has some pretty great beers, I'd argue that Toohey's isn't one of them ;)

Matilda Bay used to be an awful brewery, but it turned it ALL around with their microbrew styled stuff. Beez Kneez, a honey infused wheat beer is fantastic.

St. Arnous is pretty great, as far as wheat beers from Australia go.

I still like Hahn Premium, as it's a fairly easy to drink beer. Most people consider it kind-of shitty though.

Little Creatures does some super fruity beer as well.

Maybe the ppl you know, but Han premium is one of the high end aus beers, and is considered to be one of the best.

Drinking some Commodore Perry as we speak. Good stuff.

I remember either last year or the year before that, Kevin and Alex drank Dortmunder during an episode.

Go Browns!

Hey guys, I recently tried a beer that you might try. It's a light summer beer, and it is very good imho. I haven't seen it around much, and I am in the southeast on a small beach island. So I'm not sure how easily it would be to find. But if you're low on your beer intake, heres one to sample.

Who brews it and what kind of beer is it? (too lazy to google)

I've been all about summer / citrusy beers lately.

I love blue moon's "honey moon" mmmmmm.

I don't know much about it, other than I drank alot of it over my vacation, but this is copied straight from their site...

It is brewed by the Margaritaville Brewing Co. In Jacksonville Florida
They like to call it an island style lager

actually, nevermind, it is a product of Anheuser-Busch, just with Jimmy Buffett's endorsement. It resembles a dark apple juice, and smells like most other brews by them

Anheuser-Busch and Jimmy Buffett?!

I wonder if I could get my Dad to drink this stuff, he's madly in love with both... I don't know if I could pry regular budweiser out of his hands though, I can't get him to drink anything else.

Not a big Anheuser-Busch fan here.
I'd like to suggest Rogue's - Dead Guy Ale.
I also like belgian whites in he summer and 2 winter seasonal beers I enjoy are Sierra Nevada's Celebration Ale and my #1 fave is Sam Smith's Winter Welcome.
ps stay away from St. Sammislaus (I think thats how its spelled)... its about $20 (US) a 6 pack and I'm generally a fan of dark beer so I thought it might be decent... but I hated it. Gave it to friends of mine that enjoy thick Guiness Extra Stout type beer and they took a sip or 2 and poured it out also.

haha no that's not it, i just thought it was one of those kind of beers that you feel is kind of local and not known by many people and then you figure out it is owned by pretty much the largest brewing company there is, seeing as they were bought.

Kevin and Alex should try out Kingfisher beer. All-indian beer that tastes amazing. It might be kind of hard to find, but it is one awesome beer. If you want an indian beer, have that.

What are the laws of shipping brew? I thought it was illegal to ship anything with alcohol but somehow it's legal to sell bottles over the internet? Can someone clear this up for me.

Ya pretty much can't send liquor or any liquids through the us mail. But UPS etc, is fine. Not sure about selling over state/county lines, though, unless you deal with the taxes.

Thought we should start a new list of beers for Alex and Kevin to try on the show, unless they have tried every beer in the world, which I'm thinking could be very possible.
Here's some suggestions (with their origins) to start the list.

Sweetwater 420 Lager - Atlanta, GA
Sweetwater Blue - Atlanta, GA
Yuengling - Pottsville, PA
Speakeasy Prohibition Ale - San Francisco, CA
Abita Amber - New Orleans, LA
Abita Purple Haze- New Orleans, LA

Everyone else throw in ya thoughts and suggestions.

Were any of your suggestions in the "old" list? How about instead of adding to existing threads people just create a new thread for everything they want to post?

You'll get over it.

BTW - Current favorite beer "Hell's Belle" ... a Belgian style ale from the "Big Boss Brewing Company" in Raleigh NC. Surprised that (while I do live in NC) it was in the local supermarket.
