This week: A balls-to-the-wall review of Grindhouse, socks rockin' impressions of Guitar Hero 2 for Xbox 360, and news of MTV's Rock Band. Plus, we can't stop playing Puzzle Quest, and green couch debunked! It's The Totally Rad Show Episode 3: "The Yang" The one in which Dan wonders if Combat really Evolved, Jeff sleeps naked, Alex's voice reaches new heights, and we all enjoy full slabs of delicious baby back ribs.

What happened to "The Ying?" Can you have a yang without the ying? It is like "Love" and "Marriage."

Love and marriage, love and marriage
Go together like a horse and carriage
Dad was told by mother
You cant have one without the other.

1) I completely agree with Jeff on Death Proof
2) Thanks to you guys I'm sadly addicted to Puzzle Quest... I've only been playing since Saturday and I'm a level 14 Wizard :P
3) I'm soo ashamed of you guys right now... next time call me, I have a way with Ikea furniture :)

These babies keep getting better. I really enjoyed this episode. The Grindhouse discussion was awesome--I liked the differing opinions. Made for an interesting segment. A friend of mine went to see it at Mann's Chinese this past weekend and Tarantino, Eli Roth, Rosario Dawson and some others showed up. I now hate him forever.

I'm right there with Dan's lunch comments on Halo. Really nice game, but not really worth the unbelievable adulation heaped upon it. (and don't be stealin' my lunchcast concept, ya bastards ;) )

On GH2, I think I prefer the SG controller by a hair--primarily for the bigger select and start buttons. I use the select button to engage the star power, rather than tipping the thing up.

Oh, and on the ratio of original recordings vs. covers. only three of the songs are by the original artist (Toadies, Primus, and My Chemical Romance). The rest are covers. And Jeff is dead on--the Nirvana one is awful.

I also bought Guitar Hero 2 for my Xbox 360 and I love it. I do have one of the jacked up whammy bars which is a *****, but I'm replacing it soon.

So anyway, great show.
I think you've forced me to want to try Puzzle Quest now.

I agree with Dan. I don't get the big deal about Halo.

The thing Halo did, was convincing the gaming industry how important Co-op is. NOTHING MORE. The AI was pretty good, but the enemies was so ****ing stupid looking that you didn't want to kill them because they were threat, but because they were so ****ing ugly you just didn't want to look at them anymore.
And the level design is HORRIBLE. It's honestly some of the worst level design ever in a game. Jesus god, it's the same 3-4 levels over and over and over again.
The weapons are boring and stupid looking. The overall design is horrible.

Goldeneye was the first FPS that worked really well on a console. Halo is the second, no doubt, it works.
But it's not a very good game.

It got big on hype and co-op.

My problem with Halo was strictly the repetitive level design. Literally, the developers just stuck the same room after another in sequence. I think at one point they took the exact same level and just reversed it.

Halo did a lot of things wonderfully (it controls well, vehicles are sweet, multiplayer is tons of fun), but it's far from perfect--especially when compared to the pinnacle of FPS games like "Half-Life."

Great Episode!!! I love this show. Thanks for giving a schedule for when-ish the show will be availible.

I liked the part of the show where you guys were eating and talking about halo. It seemed so much like when my friend and I are out.

So far my only complaint about the show is all the over talk. It seems like you guys get so excited about what you want to say that you don't let the other person finish.

Other than that, Loved the episode.

Ahhhh Jeff. Thank you so much for your review of Deathproof. I really enjoyed it, but with the way my guy was teasing me over how just lit up my face was during the second act (or 4th in the way you split it up) I was very worried that other people might dismiss it as some sort of girl power stint... or maybe not have the patience for it's drastically different pace after Rodriguez's powerhouse. It being a very slow burn, which I think worked amazingly as the second movie because it let's you forget about Planet Terror and get into this story and these characters and appreciate it fully as a separate entity. Having a second Planet Terror would have taken away from both films in my opinion.

Also, I couldn't disagree more that there wasn't any "menace". The second I saw her start ship's mast, I started gripping my boyfriend's hand like there was no tomorrow. Before we'd seen Kurt Russel, because you knew you were going to soon... but you didn't know just when or how and holy god! I would blame it on the fact that you'd already gotten yourself out of the movie because you hated the dialogue (which I'm going to have to say is pure preference and personality), not that there wasn't sufficient suspense built.

I loved Jeff's take on Death Proof. Despite this show's multiple 'triple-punch-explosions' and the 'escape-from-the-house-explosion', It's not ALWAYS about the explosions, baby!! Character development = Key.

There's an amusing correlation between Alex's level of excitement and the pitch of his voice. Man, when he was saying "just stop the car!", all of the dogs in my neighborhood started howling. :P

Oh, and one more thing I'm loving about this show is the intro -- really pretty nice, graphically speaking. And the way Jeff 'snaps up' into the frame right before his name appears cracks me UP every time I see it.

Disagree!!!! Halo is definitely one of the best games of all time, before this the only fps on a console that was good was Golden Eye and maybe Time Splitters.. Level design was one of its strong points, this game is long, and no levels don't seem to repeat, in fact as you go through the game you can't help but keep playing!! I remember fist tim I played, I had to finish it, which I did in 2 days, if I didn't have work I would of done it in one sitting.

Half Life, well that comparison is so far, your talking about a game where your PC needs to be the latest and greatest, in order for you to take advantage of the graphics!

Well Episode 3, just as good as 2 I would say. You could tell they tried to no talk over each other as much, or at least it seemed like they were making that effort.

The movie review again, way to long. When you thought they were moving on to the second part of the movie, someone had to add something more, soooo painful.

The guitar hero review wasn't much better. They didn't really show off the guitar, not much game play was shown, didn't list the new songs. I myself have never played guitar hero and was interested in the review. I left with no more knowledge about the game then I had before.

This was the third episode in the 3 I was going to watch before I made my decision to watch more. I'm sorry to say that's it for now. I definately think the show has a lot of promise. I think I'll check back at episode 10.

Dan, I remember the show. I went to Nickelodeon studios in Orlando, FL and actually saw a few cast members preparing for a taping one time. Oh Alex, I love Possum Kingdom. Jeff and Alex, Goldeneye was the most influential FPS for consoles, for the time. I have not gotten that same experience with a FPS for a console that I had so long ago, it was an intensely good time. Then again I don't have an XBox. Half-Life became my new favorite FPS of all time, yeah for the computer though. I cannot wait until Team Fortress Classic 2!

I enjoyed this week's episode greatly if only for the fact that they dropped my name on the show for remembering what Kwirk was. That was definitely rad, I must say. Thanks guys. I still can't believe I'm not the only one who remembers that game. I've never met anyone in real life who knows it.

I also want to point out that I'm very impressed with how quick the guys were to respond to my email. It may have just been a coincidence, but such good fan service will definitely make me want to watch more and interact. That aspect of the TRS and Diggnation is what makes them great.

Great show and I agree generally with what you guys thought about Grindhouse.

A couple of people started to leave during the dialogue scenes of Death Proof in my theatre which was kinda of meh, but the chase scene was worth staying for. Overal Grindhouse was great and I can't wait until it comes out on DVD.

Halo was ok. I've been a player of games since Duckhunt . . . and the thing I remember about Halo was the first time I was able to jump on a vehicle and fire the gun while my brother drove . . . but after about an hour, the coolness went away because of the limited boards and stiff movement.

Havn't seen GrindHouse yet . . . but Kurt Russel is my all time fav actor and he could make a shit sandwhich taste good.

Awesome show. Great Trio and mix of personalities who have one thing in common - a passion for fun. It comes out in the show.

Can't wait until the next episode . . . and do you guys play puzzle quest on a DS?

(I just quit WOW today. Got old and paying for the expansion is a joke. Giving them more money on top of a monthly fee for a large patch is ri-god-damn-diculous . . . "they need to pay their employees" is a load of bull. They are getting a monthly fee from 7 million subscribers so it demonstrates a lack of loyalty when they charge 40 bucks for a large patch in my opinion. I was a playtester for STAR WARS Galaxies and it turns my stomach to see how that game went from the bomb to bantha poodoo and paying for the expansion is bad sign for my WOW experience.)

So I need a game to play when I'm taking a break from writing and my brother has the old DS . . . and I was wondering how the graphics are on puzzle quest because someone mentioned they were sub par or something on the DS?

I haven't looked up a news story but I know the my theater split Grindhouse into two this weekend (which I know was talked about right away). I don't know what to think about that, besides that I'm glad I caught Grindhouse on it's oppening weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing them seperatley but I'd would be annoyed to have to pay for them seperatley.

Copyright law.

the man is right

What is copyright?
Copyright is a form of protection grounded in the U.S. Constitution and granted by law for original works of authorship fixed in a tangible medium of expression. Copyright covers both published and unpublished works.

What does copyright protect?
Copyright, a form of intellectual property law, protects original works of authorship including literary, dramatic, musical, and artistic works, such as poetry, novels, movies, songs, computer software, and architecture. Copyright does not protect facts, ideas, systems, or methods of operation, although it may protect the way these things are expressed. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section "What Works Are Protected."

How is a copyright different from a patent or a trademark?
Copyright protects original works of authorship, while a patent protects inventions or discoveries. Ideas and discoveries are not protected by the copyright law, although the way in which they are expressed may be. A trademark protects words, phrases, symbols, or designs identifying the source of the goods or services of one party and distinguishing them from those of others.

When is my work protected?
Your work is under copyright protection the moment it is created and fixed in a tangible form that it is perceptible either directly or with the aid of a machine or device.

Do I have to register with your office to be protected?
No. In general, registration is voluntary. Copyright exists from the moment the work is created. You will have to register, however, if you wish to bring a lawsuit for infringement of a U.S. work. See Circular 1, Copyright Basics, section “Copyright Registration.”

No, copyrights cover pieces of art also. This includes painting, sculpture and even buildings. It also covers photographs.

I posted the photograph in question on Flickr. Flickr's terms of service allow me to assign any creative commons license. Here is the license that covers that photo (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/).

Good legalese (pronounced "Legal-eeze"), but you forgot about the..... uh..... SMBOPACP Act. Yeah, that's the one! The "Standard Message Board Operating Procedures and Common Practices Act". It states.... uh.... and I'm paraphrasing here, that:

"The poster of the source photo, heretofore referred to as Poster, foregoes legal control over the posting of a modified photo, henceforth Posted, as in line with the common operating procedures found on message boards since the dawn of man."

....and, um.....

I know you're joking. One of the problems with copyright law is that it's actually hard to grant people legal permission to alter works or art. In fact, there is no legal binding way you can surrender a copyright without a explicitly contract or license. The law is only set up to protect people who don't want to share their work. This is why the Creative Commons was created. It allows people a standard framework to share their work without having to resort to complex legal paperwork.

For example, I've had publishers find my photos on Flickr and use them in publications. They don't have to worry about costly legal wrangling because I have used the CC license.

Unlike a trademark, a copyright on art is automatic to the creator and cannot be waived implicitly by any action or display. There always needs to be an explicit license. The artist can't give it away without an explicit license, even if s/he wanted to.

The names Don, not brad.
I Totally(radshow) remember that show,
it had a character named Coach Roach, for the guys
gym class, and Coach Rochelle for the chicks.
It came on around the time Dave Culliea's (from full house) show used to come on.
Man that brings back pre-pubescent memories.

Just watched the eppisode late, loved it just as much as the others, especially the disagreements over grindhouse. Alex, you're great in Diggnation and this, but I think you need to watch your interrupting a little bit. Overall though this is quickly rising to my place for favorite podcast :). Thanks!

That was great.

About the show, I think most people knew you guys were sitting in chairs. At least I hope so.
And you guys suck at putting together IKEA furniture, although I'll admit those chairs looked more complicated than most furniture.

Sorry Jeff but your a retard......QT's movie completely sucked, it was boring, it was dumb, and the filming sucked, when the girls were chased with the stunt woman on the hood why didn't they just stop. Totally unbelievable, chic flick gone bad, Alex I totally agree. Perhaps the redeeming parts were those with Kurt Russell. QT should be kicked out of hollywood.

Although i really didn't care for Deathproof it did seem to remind me of something. At the edges of my brain I seem to recall old theaters or perhaps it was the movie houses at the time using old crappy movies and recutting them to make new crappy movies. Perhaps a new scene or two shot and thrown in (hence the reduced popping in the reels) but just repackaged fluff. I figured deathproof was a throwback to that especially since it had the few split seconds of frame with another title.

Am I the only one who remembers this?? Am i just that old?

Actually, I know more people that liked Death Proof than people that didn't...

I liked the cow behind Alex when they were eating at the diner.

Just sayin, Alex shouldn't have been blockin' the cow.

Oh, wait, episode 4 is out? ****!

Diva.....I really am shocked, I couldn't stand it, but Im not a kill bill fan either so must be taste is all screwed up....I think I hold Tarantino to a higher standard cause I know he could accidentally turn on a camera at a family reunion and release it and the critics would bow down and give him an emmy.

Comhcinc Love it your right trans 2 sucked but I loved all the characters too bad they really didn't budget or take the time to give the characters more of a chance to shine. I guess I should give Jeff some slack cause anyone with a trans 2 avatar must be a retard also....

Jeff,

Can I just say that you do an impressive open mouth gape when Alex and Dan say stuff you find incredulous (e.g. their Death Proof thoughts).

Fantastic stuff.

;)

Yeah, so my internet was down for over a month so I just listened to episode 3.
I must say how impressed I was with the review of Grindhouse (and the movie reviews in general). When it comes to movies and movie critiques I feel you have to find someone who is in sync with your tastes since it's all subjective. That's what I loved about Dan's reviews in the past.Well he was wrong about Deathproof, but Jeff was so very right. I had to mention it to my brother because I was starting to believe we were the only two who loved everything about it. Although Alex is clueless in this regard, I can appreciate a difference in opinion when expressed well.
