View Full Version : Where do you read your books?
The Screw on Aaron

This thread was inspired by another conversation I had with Mikegraham6 on another thread and I thought it would be an interesting topic.
I read my books in a park in front of Notre Dame on sunny days whenever I can, reading in the same place I can sometimes recall other books I read in the same area on similar conditions so it helps me remember previous months which is very useful. Alternatively I read on my couch and when I go to London I usually read in a Starbucks (no jokes please it's too easy;) ) I don't mind reading on trains or planes or even some automobiles (that's a lie reading in the car makes me sick! ) There are many places to read your books in your different comfort levels I'm curious to hear how different people read books in different places:)
Where do you read your books?

Reality? Anywhere I can find the time really; desk, lunch break, office, while watching television, city park, subway.
Ideal location? In my study on a comfortable chair, listening to Scott Walker records.

If I buy the comic while i'm at work or on lunch, chances are that I'll read one on the train ride home. Then when I get home I usually just read them at my desk in from of my pc. I feel most comfortable reading them at home in my room.

It differs depending on what I'm up to, but I like somewhere where I'm not going to be disturbed. I have to be able to be in my bubble and create the world. Generally on Wednesdays I'll head straight to the couch, set down my stack, wrap a blanket around myself and go cocoon style in the corner cushion. I don't read them all at once, because then they stop being distinct, but I have my laptop there for breaks in between. I will read them all that night though.
I don't really read outside, I'm to easily distracted and would look silly with my blanket.

pre-move: at my desk, in my spinny chair with my feet up
post move: on my bed, comics placed on the floor next to me (I don't actually have a desk in my new house yet... kinda need that soon I guess)

I think the better question is - where don't I read my comics?
- At work at my desk (shhh)
- On the couch
- On the floor
- In bed (I've got my post-SF stack to work through)
- In front of the computer
- On the subway (TPBs only)

Either in my chair here, or surprisingly I can put down half a trade or so each time I go to the gym by reading it between sets. Been doing that a lot lately.

I've developed a comfortable ritual. The store by my office opens at 11:00; after some Civil War-related sellouts, I started taking lunch a bit early on Wednesdays and getting to the shop at about 11:05. Every week I walk in, chat up Dave the manager, get my books and head over to the Subway by my office. There I devour a sub and as many must-read comics as I can before the hour(ish) is up. Anything I don't get finished then gets read in dribs and drabs over the course of the next month, or perhaps next week at Subway. I carry my comics in my backpack pretty much everywhere in case I find myself stranded at Jiffy Lube or someplace and I'm bored.
The sub and comic ritual is one of my favorite parts of the week, one of those simple, pure pleasures of life that make the bad days worth it. It ain't Notre Dame, but it'll do.

I assumed most comic readers carried a few books in their backpacks. Never know when you got a spare 10 minutes or so. Sometimes work is slow or you're just waiting around.

I've got whatever prose book I'm currently working and the newspaper in my shoulder bag. Comics have already taken over my pre-sleep reading time, I had to give something up to my other reading materials.

Normally I'll read them in the Starbucks inside our business school where I have class Wednesday afternoon. I'm also not ashamed to be seen reading them on a bench in the hallway before class, either. Girls usually react "Comics? Huh." Then after a minute or so they ask to flip through them, and realize they're not quite as horrible geeky as they thought. But then again, I'm not reading X-Men comics (sorry, Ron).

Same, sans the newspaper. Although my ds has started to creep into that time now... and I've been thinking about getting a mobile broadband card. So basically I have no idea when I'm actually going to read anymore.

I can't read a prose book on the train. When reading a hefty book in particular, I need to be relaxed & comfortable in my study. Now a comic takes me all of five minutes to read. Ten if the art is pretty. Comics work out better when sitting outside on the curb waiting for the next band to come on.

Man. After getting back into comics, I haven't read much prose at all (I miss the pretty pictures...). Comics as an interlude between bands? That's such a good idea!

It's really hard now. At my last job I was manager and had my own office. I moved companies to go to a larger, more stable company and had to move back into cube land. But there are upsides: same money and no direct reports (i.e. less stress).:D

I'm lucky in that my cube is in the corner of the building with windows on two sides so if you're not coming to see me you have no reason to be over there. Not a lot of foot traffic unlike the last time I was in the cube in my former life as a banker when I sat by the coke machine. Seriously.

Or perhaps the opposite. Maybe your immune system is getting boot-camp-like training. Promise us to take care of the forums when we all die from the uber-flu virus that hits in 2009.

Japanized Chinese Food joint run by Burmese.... that is where I read my books, just after finishing work. 6 nights a week I have been in there for the past month, about one TPB a night. That, and on the train Tuesday and Thursday because my commute those days is long, and I read trades. I have spent much time in that greasy spoon, reading...lots of books.
Funny story tonight, ACBG, you may love this especially as I think you are a big Emma Frost fan (at least I am now). I was reading "Torn" (Astonishing #13-18), I've finished eating, drank my bottle of beer, but I'm still sitting there with an empty plate and bottle, totally engrossed because it's the big moment when Emma's true relationship to the Hellfire Club and Cassandra is being revealed, Kitty and the baby thing, the story arc is in full climax mode, and the nice waitress, a Burmese girl with an impenetreble accent in both Japanese and English comes over to ask something, which she insists on repeating again and again even though her accent in Japanese is totally impenetrable. I think she wants to practice her Japanese or English, I was way rude, I think, because I wanted to say "Buzz OFF lady, I need to find out what's up with EMMA!" (How do you translate that?). Anyway, I imperiously yell out for the Burmese lady that runs the joint for a proper translation, it's just "Do you want another beer?" and I'm like "NO. I'm fine." (Said like "Now GO away").
The cook and lady who runs the joint actually thought it was funny cause they see me in there every night with a new comic, know I'm a nice guy and am one of their best most regular customers.
Oh me and my crazy life. But hey, if I want another beer, I'll order it. And don't ask when I'm engrossed in serious Emma mode with Cassandra Nova and Kitty and the baby thing and Scott's got a gun...You know what I mean?
