View Full Version : If Raimi doesn't return, who should do Spider-Man 4?

Okay, so as time goes by, it seems that Raimi is in the middle about coming back, he says he'd love to, and then maybe. So let's think about this:

So if Raimi doesn't come back, who do we think should be the next director of Spider-Man? I really want to know who you guys would choose? To say "They shouldn't do it with out Raimi" is heartfelt, but that won't come to pass. If he doesn't return, there will be a part 4, we all know it. So who should do it?

Note: As much as it'd be interesting to say "Scorsese!" he wouldn't do it, let's be honest here. So realistically, who should take over?

My possible choices:
1) James Cameron - He was supposed to do it long before Titanic. So he has the interest, I'd want to see if he can still do it after Avatar, but beyond that, I think it'd be a cool choice.

2) Danny Boyle: In just watching the trailer to "Sunshine" (Why can't it come out now!) I believe he could handle the action scenes, and he'd bring something TOTALLY different to the project.

3) Ridly Scott: I don't think I need to say how awesome this man is behind the camera, so I'll just say this: Alien, Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven (DC)...think about it.

4) Ronny Yu: Now this man has a key eye, but not the best choices for American Films, but put him behind Spider-Man, and I think we have a case of amazing.

5) Peter Jackson: If Raimi takes Hobbit, Jackson does Spider-Man 4, it's only fair.

6) Wachowski Bros: Matrix 1 Wachowski, not Matrix 2 and 3, and no SM in Spider-Man, or super slow-mo and we have a fine film.

So what does everyone else think, if Raimi doesn't come back, who does it? (Someone will have to)

I know my pick is known for his movies and his love for comics, and I don't know what the opinions are on his movie work, but I vote Kevin Smith. He's just a comic lover so I think he would fit well. Did he do DD? I think he did.

*EDIT*
Just checked, he didn't so I think he would be an awesome fit for Spidey four if they choose to do another.

no he didn't and he has gone on record many times saying he doesn't want to direct an action movie. write maybe.

i think if raimi leaves he will be replaced with a no name director. no big name will want to follow him and in all honesty, when a comic book flick gets a big name director i count my blessings. for every Christopher Nolan theres a tim story in the wings getting ready to f*ck it up.

i think the bigger question is who will replace Tobey McGuire because i think he is done after this one. discounting the Jake Gyllenhal casting (that's too easy) who would you pick? i think if they decide to go the Young peter route, Shia Leboeuf (?) would be a good choice, he's an underrated actor, he can do the vulnerable peter and the cocky spidey that's needed for the role

It's not predicting the future, it's money, the studio has already hired a writer to do part 4. And has been quoted has saying "We're doing 4". Not predicting the future, it's reading statments.

True, that didn't happen, but that was before there was a franchise, and ALOT of money behind it. It's one thing if there's nothing before, now there is.

It might not happen for a while sure, but there will be a Spider-Man 4.

From Entertainment Weekly: (http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20035161,00.html)

On the eve of what is expected to be the biggest Spider-Man yet, Entertainment Weekly learns that director Sam Raimi is seriously considering directing The Hobbit—a choice that could potentially leave Spidey 4 without a director and, says Kirsten Dunst, a leading lady.

Raimi’s name has been floated in connection with The Hobbit ever since a very public dustup between Peter Jackson and New Line chairman Bob Shaye left the Lord of the Rings prequel without a director. Raimi went on the record for the first time about his potential involvement in the project during an exclusive interview with EW’s Steve Daly for the magazine’s Summer Preview issue, on stands Friday: “Peter Jackson might be the best filmmaker on the planet right now. But, um, I don’t know what’s going to happen next for me right now. First and foremost, those are Peter Jackson and Bob Shaye’s films. If Peter didn’t want to do it, and Bob wanted me to do it—and they were both ok with me picking up the reigns—that would be great. I love the book. It’s maybe a more kid-friendly story than the others.”

Sony’s President of Production Matt Tolmach tells EW that the studio is cautiously optimistic about retaining the team that launched the Spidey franchise so spectacularly: “Listen, we’re making Spider-Man 4. Our hope, dream and intention is to do it with Sam. But I don’t have a crystal ball.”

More in the link.

No crystal ball hm? Maybe he should just ask JurassicAlien. :P

I'm confused though. The article says maguire doesn't really want to do number 4, but doesn't say that's because it might be without Raimi. Does anyone know about that? I couldn't blame him if it was just wanting to get away from that character, but that could definitley put a stopper on the sequel, at least for now. Of course it could always go the way of batman or bond.

I never said I thought it was a good thing. I'm so so on the idea. I'm sure if it did there would still be spiderman movies I like in the future, but the continuity between the films would surely turn non-existant. But we can't really expect them to go forever.

(and out of curiosity which two bonds?)

i didn't mean that to sound that way. sorry. and i really don't want them to go own forever after three i think it should be at least 25 years before they make another one

which two bonds? George Lazenby and David Niven, who else (not really)

I really don't want to see any more flicks get made after this one, I think more will water it down, but if they get anyone, I guess I'd go with Gore Verbinski. I know the 2nd Pirates flick was a little dissapointing, but the first was the nuts and the 3rd looks to be equally so. I figure he's earned his big budget stripes by now.

Spidey 4 will happen, Raimi or no...X-men 3 went on without Singer, (that wasn't the point of this thread.) I read at one point they have up to 7 plotted, but that was the studio.

My dream choice for director? Senior Spielbergo, nobody does blockbuster better.

I like the idea of Cameron, but pre-titanic cameron. Not silly "i'm king of the world and just found Jesus" Cameron.

Ridley Scott would be great, but we'd probably end up with his brother. Cue top gun music.

Clint Eastwood could bring the super down ending that would fit a spidey flick...

My unreasonable-whatareyousomekindofidiot choice for director? Fincher, that would be an unholy Spidey flick, he would get his ass handed to him royally in an R-rated beautifully filthy venom murdering random people flick. :)

exactly. we live in the real world where people like money. Everybody looks at this from an artistic perspective except the people actually responsible for the choices. Don't believe me, ask the people behind Police Academy 92, Friday The 13th Part 99, and Weekend at Bernies Part 2

I kow what you mean, nothing about WoftheW seemed Spielberg to me expect for the scene in the basement of the house when the camera/eye was looking for them, but taht was basically the raptor scene from JP.

But Munich, I liked and it felt back to form and really well directed. I think if he gets a film with heart and meaning it's great directing, give him a bland action movie, and that's what you get. (Though his bland directing is heads over genre action directors)

I don't know if i want a new one after this. But my confusion stems from Kirsten Dunst, who at first i didn't want in this role but she grew on me. She stated in an interview that she thinks the characters couldn't live on without her, tobey, or Raimi.

Tobey, maybe

Raimi, of course

Kirsten, don't really care. Its not like she gave an Oscar performance.

Also the character are like 60 years old, someone else is bound to play them again in the future. So she was never gonna always be Mary Jane, the same with tobey. No one actor owns this part.

i agree with you, i really wasn't too impressed with her look in the village (or from what i've seen of lady in the water). but anytime i've seen her outside of movies (entertainment shows, magazines) she looks drop dead gorgeous. Its wierd how someone chooses movies where the characters don't do her justice, but i guess that just proves she is a real actress (too bad those moves where the village and lady in the water, yuck!)
