Archie was my king in elementary school. I even had a crush on Jughead, he was so misunderstood. I want to say they got me into other comics, but I'm pretty sure it was cartoons that did that. BUT my mother having read archie when she was young made her fine with buying me comics, which was invaluable.
I'll probably be hitting up my shop if for no other reason then I almost always go there on Saturdays. It's right next to a blockbuster and an amaaazing mexican place.

This weekend on Free Comic Book Day, there will be a sighting at St. Louis' Star Clipper of that most rare and elusive of creatures: the LCS sale.
"In conjunction with Free Comic Book Day, Star Clipper will be having a sale this Saturday!"
"Bring your friends and family! This Free Comic Book Day event and sale is sure to help introduce budding readers into a series they'll love, and maybe our old-timers too."
"Look for entire graphic novel series slashed to half price, while all graphic novels in the store will be marked down. Apparel, toys, statues, novelties and more will also be discounted. Come in early to get the good stuff!"

i got a chance to read the Spider-man FCBD issue. it has a standalone story that i didn't find to interesting (the art was nice though) but the second half had a preview of the One More Day storyline, which actually caught my attention. its drawn by Quesada so we'll see how long that lasts but it interested me enough to pick up

And you went and backdated all those entries to create the illusion that you've had one all along. You must love us.
Are there any plans for a message board?
Are there any great comics to come out of Free Comic Book Day historically? Anything remembered after the fact?

I too got Spidey and Wolf-Man, along with the one by the guy from My Chemical Romance. A friend of mine is obsessed with that guy, so I figured it was the least I could do.
It is so nice to actually buy something on sale at a comic shop (which, by the way, was crazy busy). I snagged the Kurt Busiek Spider-Man trade; good times.
In addition to the fanboys and looky-loos, I did see one guy blatantly ignoring the "limit 3" sign and going through to pick up one of everything without even looking at them because they were free. I left before he could meet with heartbreak at the register.

Seems like the FCBD concept does bring in business for the shops. The guy at the shop I went to was complaining (good naturedly) about how he hadn't had a chance to even get a drink due to constant customer flow.
my shop was packed and it wasn't with the normal greasy magic nerds
I was chuckling to myself as the CBG explained the concept of a trade to a group of people standing in front of a shelf
alexg

I never got into magic, probably because I'm anti-social, but in a way I'm glad, since if I did, I'm sure there'd be no room under my sofa for comics on account a all the the cards that would be there.
I'm just amused by the pecking order thing it brings out in me
I'm just so much higher on the hierarchy of geeks

I slept in late and only got there like 5 minutes before close. While I got my free comics I missed out on taking much advantage of the 20% sale they were having that they did NOT advertise before hand. Damnit! I got wolfman, spidey and my CBG threw on Gumby in a rare show of... actually talking to me instead of silently ringing me up. It was exciting.

FCBD was great in my store, they had gold and silver stuff.
Spider-man: The art was good, and I didn't mind Slott on it. It is a good stand alone if you've only seen the movies, as it were (I read Spider-man, but it's somethign I noticed)
Wolf Man: Was all right, I'll keep reading it. It was free so...

How 'bout that Wolf Man? Not every day you see a millionaire businessman rocking the short sleeve shirt/tie combo like Homer Simpson. Must be his at-home casual wear. I think my favorite scene was his first transformation, when he attacked the gardener who was gardening in the snow in the middle of the night. Like you do.
Something about Kirkman's creator-owned work seems so... breathless. He tells the story like he's got somewhere to be.

That's so damn funny...I thought the same thing when I saw the short sleeve tie outfit.
The other thing I couldn't understand is why the werewolf had the presence of mind to make his way back to the hospital bed and later his own bedroom before changing back.
This whole "directors cut" thing is lame though. I was impressed that they were truly giving away issue 1, but they aren't. I mean I get it--make you pay for the same thing plus a few more pages, but still, lame.

Oh my gosh! I heard someone say the exact same thing after I took that pic.
this was really funny
I was talking with someone about how I took all these pictures of freaks at the NYCC
they ask 'did you ask them or just take their picture?'
I respond: 'No, I didn't ask them. You leave the goddamn house looking like that and you're inviting picture taking.'
what makes someone decide to buy a storm trooper costume, and then not only buy it but put it on, and then not only put it on but leave the house in it, and then not only leave the house in it but go to somewhere crowded in it?
I will never understand this.

It's interesting how Star Wars has completely co-opted the comic book experience. When you go to a con, like, 1/4 of the people* are dressed as Star Wars characters. I mean, yes, it's all geek culture, but still...
*I have no scientific data to back this up.

05-06-2007, 06:28 PM
Yeah it's true--Star wars seems to be the main area of Cosplay that has taken off in the US. I don't know how long cosplay has been around in japan, but if I'm not mistaken people had already started costuming themselves when they went to see Star Wars back in the 70s (feel like I've seen footage of this on various star wars documentaries). If that's truly the case, then maybe Star Wars spawned cosplay?! (**wild speculation**).
I've long been disturbed by the whole stormtrooper thing...why do people want to spend their time dressing in costumes that were originally meant to invoke fascistic cultures!?

I find it virtually impossible to believe, but Wikipedia maintains that someone named Forrest J. Ackerman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Forrestcostuming.jpg) spawned cosplay at a sci-fi convention in 1939. ?????

My store was mostly active readers going for free swag. There were some kids in the store on saturday which was odd and cool. The guys at store said the only non-regular buyers were people there for the Silver age sale they were having.

Well, FCBD (free comic book day) came and went, and many an adventure was had. It made me really happy to see all the people in the comic shops (yes, plural, I went to three), and it made me even happier to see them actually buying things, not just grabbing some free stuff and bolting. To coincide with FCBD, two of the three LCSs also had back issue fire sales. The result: I bought a lot of .25$ comics. And some regular floppies. And some trades. And some original art. It was a good day. I hope that some of the people who came in for the free shiz will come back for some "real" comics sometime soon.
I have a lot to read.
I talked with Jason Howard about coming to speak at my school, and he was very receptive. He was a really nice guy - and extremely talented. I watched him draw a Ms. Marvel for a customer, and turns out it was the first time he has ever drawn the character. I hope we can work something out before the end of the school year.
There are pics at my virb page in my sig.

One of the highlights of FCBD for me was at the third store of the day which is just off campus of Michigan State. A frat boy and his sorostitue(soroity girl) girlfriend came in the store and the look on her face and she saw all of the comics, comic readers, hero clix....etc was pricless. I'm sure she had to go home to shower and roll around in all of the expensive crap that E! and People tells her to buy to make herself feel better
that's funny. I'm the prettiest person I've ever seen in my LCS
