I'm pretty sure that there was a Superman musical produced, and positive there was a Batman musical that was bandied about; in fact, if you do some searching on Wikipedia, you can find links to downloadable mp3s of many of the Batman musical's proposed musical numbers-- quite interesting.

In short, not really worried about a Spider-man musical.

ok this passage was the second time I threw up while reading the article:

While plot points of the production have yet to be revealed, casting notices suggest a slightly skewed take on the classic storylines. For example, the character of Arachne, née Spider-Woman, doesn't get her powers from a botched science experiment as in the comic books, but rather will be depicted in the musical as "a beautiful, boastful young woman turned into a spider for her hubris and lack of respect for the gods."

the first was the choice of U2

Evil Dead as a campy fun musical, that I can see. Spider-Man as it is described in the link? Oh my goodess...some "artists" really do live in a bubble..."yes boss, sounds like a great idea, boss..."

Well, look on the bright side...Bono has always taken himself far too seriously, what better way for him to become a high profile laughing stock? His ego needs a really big public pounding. And I think this may be the fiasco, the "moment of clarity" needed for more people to say "Hey Bono, you're an idiot with a really big ego" and maybe he might not be able to escape the consequences of this...horrible fiasco of an idea.

But it might not make it out of it's initial Equity readiing...if the audience starts laughing in the places they aren't supposed to, I'm sure Bono will say...

"Listen to them, they love ME, they love MY work!"

(Sure boss, whatever you say, boss...)

I love that everyone connected to the films (McGuire, Raimi, etc.) are being very quiet but respectful about the prospects of Spider-Man 4. But Kirsten Dunst? OH MY GOD, how in the world could we live without HER??? How could members of HER team deny HER a job??? (sheesh).

Thanks for the kind words, Fred and Kwok, means a lot from you two guys. I've still been here, in the same undisclosed location under Tokyo Tower, just been doing something different -- reading lots and lots of comics. And working hard. And off grid with Nick. He says hi by the way.

can someone please explain this "bono has a big ego" thing to me. i don't see it

I base my judgement on how his music comes across to me, and on how he can think this idea of a Spider-Man musical, with the Sinead O'Connor concept of "Spider Woman" or "Girl" or whatever concept is just really ridiculous, and betrays the fact he has never heard of Jessica Drew, which means he has not been reading comics lately (or since the 80s). Anyone who thinks this is a good idea is obviouly full of himself, something I have thought about Bono for a good long time, again listening to his music. Keep in mind our age difference. Does not make me superior to you, just gives me a somewhat different perspective.

I've also been around long enough to be able to imagine the kind of elitist art school grad who may think the Spider-Man costume would be a great outfit for a ballet number. Scared yet? Does not sound like artisitc hubris? they don't want to face their own hubris, they want to dress it up like "Spider Female" and "Spider Male" and expect us to pay money to see it.

In about 1990, Bono did a version of "Night and Day" on an album called "Red Hot and Blue," where contempory singers did modern versions of old songs. The best versions were of course those that knew, loved, and had respect for the original material, and just did the song as is, and didn't think they had the genius to improve on genius. Irving Berlin and Cole Porter (who wrote all the songs on Red Hot and Blue) always preferred Fred Astaire as a singer. He didn't try and "jazz up" their songs, he just sang them, and it was great. That's lots about music, not Spider-Man, but we are talking about a musical. I know something about musicals.

With Night and Day, Bono sounded like he was masturbating on the microphone. He took a snazzy ballad and turned it into a slow, torturous, moaning jerk off. Now consider this link on the Spider-Man musical: can you really tell me this does not sound like the idiot idea of filthy rich artists living in a bubble, living off of 20 years of royalties from old stuff they did that think anything they touch turns to gold now, no matter how dumb the idea is?

Artistic masturbation. Not keen on that. Maybe just me. I generally dislike things I am prone to myself and recognize as a weakness. People should keep artistic masturbation in the privacy of their homes, and not spray it on everyone else, much less Spider-Man.

Actually, I base my opinion on a bad cover that sounded like what he has sounded like to me for 20 years on many of his albums. U2 fans love him, and hey, good for them, they would no doubt hate the kind of music I like. But I don't have the ego to think I could pull off the kind of stuff his fans like. THAT would be a disaster, be thankful I don't have the money for that.

Wow, I am overwhelmed by the all the welcoming back. Just give it a couple of weeks...you'll be singing a different tune, he-he-he....

But seriously, take a look at what I've been reading at this week's pull list thread. I've been ingesting about one trade per night, and still have a pile to go throught. Also got to look at some CW stuff. Oh, that was...yeah. Hm. Thoughts on that on the latest POW thread. I've come out on my "Tony Stark" position now that I can make an informed decision. Just scan through for the longest post and (surprise) that's me. My position is pretty different from many.

Lord of the Rings musical? This I cannot imagine. Most of the "Poems" that Tolkien wrote for the novels are actually songs. If you can find a very rae recording of Tolkien himself doing them, go for it. I have it, I love it. He recorded it even before he knew the books would be published.

It's probably just the gay in me, but I love the idea of both of these! If played straight, I think they could be great.

On second thought, the Spidey one could go horribly wrong. While the teen melodrama lends itself nicely to the stage, superhero stage fighting could lead to some uber-cheesey effects.

Hey! Dr. Wally--I gotta welcome you back as well!

Good to see you on here again.

LOTR the Musical...that's just depressing.

Hey AlexG, great to be back. People been swell.

LOTR music: what was a little strange for me was to hear the either Merry or Pippin (can't remember which, those other two Hobbits look alike to me) singing "The Road Goes Ever On and On" from the book in the 3rd LOTR film, in that...oh, what's it called, "modern Irish folk ballad" style, because one of my treasured recordings is JRR Tolkien himself doing the same poem at about twice the tempo.

Here's the link to what I have (http://www.amazon.com/Hobbit-Fellowship-Rings-J-Tolkien/dp/0694522236/ref=sr_11_1/103-8118425-9891833?ie=UTF8&qid=1177006474&sr=11-1), it's pretty amazing, and not depressing at all, quite the opposite. Tons of fun and very inspirational. Side A is Tolkien reading "Riddles in the Dark" (Bilbo's encounter with Gollum from the Hobbit) and Side B is the songs and poems mostly from the Fellowship of the Ring read by Tolkien himself, full gusto. Hearing Tolkien doing Gollum (reading his lines, being Golllum) is amazing -- there is no other who can improve on that. The Elven ballads and Hobbit "fun and hijinks songs" are both great in their own way. And all of it from the books. These were books written by a guy that studied literature that came from people that told stories through song.

I'm constantly amazed that people think doing "the authentic" or the "really serious" version means slow, slow tempo. The version in the movie suited the mood of the scene, but if I heard it on its own I would fall asleep.

What is a little interesting is that Sinead and others that hang with Bono are all Dublin pals. Maybe what Spidey needs is a ballet number to a modern Irish Folk ballad, followed by the Sinister Six doing River Dance.

Sorry, that last bit about River Dance was a really low blow, huh?

I stumbled upon this (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070420/ennew_afp/entertainmentusfilm_070420160104) and after reading it, I don't think it will be so bad.. Who can go wrong with U2? Shoot, I'd take a trip to New York for that... Sounds odd but what are the chances of it being shown in California.. Plus, if its still baseball season... ;)

I'm with ACBG on this one. The only potential saving grace of this fiasco in waiting is the involvement of the Edge and Bono. I read the comments earlier about why some feel that Bono has a big ego and I just don't get it. The comment was made that he's still living off of royalties from things he did 20 years ago and I couldn't disagree more. Their most recent albums have been great. They are still producing great songs that sell well. Contrast that with somebody like the Stones who haven't sold a new album well in years and there you have somebody living off of the royalties for things they did 30 years ago.

Alright, I know I don't post here very often, hi guys, how's it goin...but wow...I saw this and just HAD to post.

WHAT THE HELL, is my first reaction. My second?

This cannot be worse than the show at Universal Studios that is a Spidey musical. If Bono's involved it might actually be "good" music at the VERY least and there won't be lines like the ones in the Universal show like

"Green Goblin is in the Houuuuuuuuuuuse" -Green Goblin

and one minute scene of Spidey swinging from a rope (a "web"...ugh) in the middle of the stage to the song "There Goes my Hero" by the Foo Fighters sang by the Carmen Elektra-like Mary Jane.

Either way, no matter how crappy, I would go see this. It's Spidey.

Also, anyone been to the Evil Dead musical?
