check out the Sticky at the top of the mac forum. but to narrow it down some...

Flip4mac
Divx

^^^ both Quicktime plugins to play media

Quicksilver, but only if you are a power user. I wouldn't recommend it otherwise

I'd get Firefox just because. I RARELY use it, but every now and then you'll hit a site that Safari won't work in that Firefox will handle

A lot of what you need is right there out of the box. What is it that you are looking to do, we may be able to better give you some program options then. What are your interests in relation to the computer?

iSerial Reader

SerialSeeker tends to work better, for me at least. It remembers your db file so you don't need to reopen it each time and it also loads a lot faster. You might want to give it a look

(the above program is used for evaluation purposes only)

As for a alternative to Safari, would you guys recommend Firefox or Camino?

I would use Firefox. I personally like Firefox better then Safari (I just wish Firefox came up faster).

Serial Seeker was the first one I used, but even though iSerial Reader is a bit slower, it looks a lot sleeker, but come to think of it, I might change back.

Safari is the fastest browser on the mac without question. Camino is ok, but I don't really care for the interface, it has never seemed quite as complete as the other options out there. Some people swear by it though, but personally I just think they like the idea of it and convince themselves its good

I don't use Safari on my computer, but I'm sure it's faster. As mentioned, Firefox initially loads pretty slowly, but other than that, it's the same old Firefox, so that's good.

They have Camino and Safari on the Macs in a lot of the computer labs on campus, so I've used Camino a few times. It's really not that good. Even though I'm not partial to Safari, I would use Safari long before I used Camino.

this is my set of faves for the OS X world...

Camino (web browser)
Growl (notifier)
Transmission (torrents)
Ejector (disk ejector in the menu bar)
NetNewsWire [Lite version is free] (RSS)
Virtue Desktops (multi desktop switcher [think Leopard's spaces, but years early])
VLC (media player extraordinaire)
Perian (allows QT to play pretty much anything)
Adium (chat client)
iClip (clipboard manager)
UNO (GUI tweaker, really makes things look nice)

and my #1 program of all time, Spark (http://www.shadowlab.org/Software/software.php?sign=Sprk) (hotkeys for just about EVERYTHING)
I don't launch much without using Spark these days, it's just that easy

hope this stuff helps,
Arth

Mine:
Firefox or Camino(Web browsers duh)
Adium(Instant Messenging)
VLC(Kick ass media player)
Podtube(Makes Youtube videos play in iTunes and on your iPod)
Bitrocket(Because the Bittorrent on Mac's sucks total ass)
Quicksilver(If you don't use this already then go jump off a..I mean it makes commands easier for you)
iBackup(Backs up your stuff, that is until Time Machine gets here)
iclip(Manages your clipboard)
Crossover(You can run Windows apps in Mac OS X, without going on Bootcamp or Parallels)
Perian(Makes everything basically play in QT without installing any other software

Well that is mine. Hope you enjoyed that!

If your on rev3 forums, i'd assume that your slightly smarter/want to do slightly more then the average user does - so i thought i'd mention it. It's always good to have Xcode for the updated libs even if your not going to code anything.

its unix so you have or be able to install via fink gcc++, pop open the terminal and check for it. if its not there then you can go ahead and install it

as for java i used a port of netbeans back in college that worked well. Xcode will do it if you are programing cocoa with java, but for pure java stuff i'd using something else

here is a link to a little about netbeans in os x as well as a link to the download
