Episode 15 - Gear, Gadgets and a Car?

Jessica takes a look at the ultimate ride and it's green too. Then she kicks back in the livingroom to check out the new Apple TV. Meanwhile, Wil wanders the streets with GPS navigation in hand. Hahn spends his time at home with a media server that stores your DVD's.

kevin already hacked his to play xvid i think he said a couple of shows ago.

that was a neat car, only how green is something that takes just as much oil to make a battery and charge it from a coal powered electric plant?

good show, (clapping), yes a very good show hahn, maybe we could put a blue screen in there so the indigital sign in the bacground will show up a lot better?

The Drive In segments was great! For several reasons...
A) Wil's intro... pure sex. When he turned to the camera and said "the best thing is the price" I almost had an aneurysm from laughing, just the face and the tone and the fluid pivot... whew.
And B) I actually bought that same GPS unit a few months ago and it is great. Although, you don't need a memory card to use the MP3 functionality, you can use the built in memory (what isn't used by the maps). Another great thing is this unit is apparently very hackable, there are tons of things you can find on the net for this, skins, apps, new maps, etc etc.

So far great show!

Edit:
This has probably been asked and answered before, but what are the three cameras used to shoot the show, and why does the one on the left of the main camera (center) look so much brighter (Hahn and Jessica's head shots)? Due to the shadows, there's obviously a light over there, even the right camera picks up on it some (Wil's head shots), but the center camera doesn't seem to and looks much darker.

Yea, I caught that too at the end which reminded me of questions asked in the survey.

Does this mean we can expect InDigital and other REV3 shows to start asking for money to download?

*edit*
BTW, great show guys. I was happy to see the show on the homepage again! Downloaded it right away!

Absolutely not! There's no plans to charge for the show. We (as in the InDigital crew, not Rev3) were just talking about providing outtakes or something to members.

I have to talk to the camera guy. He's handheld on that side switching between Jessica and me, so I'm thinking the shutters open an extra stop. It could also be that our side has two 20 foot tall windows that's framed out of the shot. We don't have blackout curtains, so it could be that...I'll have to find out for sure.

I think we would be more interested in Jessica's members only footage :) JK, great show.

That electricity does not necessarily need to come from coal, but even when it does I would think that it should be easier to reduce emissions and improving efficiency in all kinds of ways in a limited number of power plants that also have the advantage of not needing to be small and mobile than it is to do the same in a bazillion cars.

Anyway, that car is amazing no matter what.

Indeed, that was a great moment.

Great show overall, I would say.

No idea if any of them actually read the forums but here is an answer to something they wanted to do with the AppleTV. This is a way to house movies/multimedia files on a NAS drive and have the AppleTV refer to it for content. I am not going to break down all the steps needed but simply go through the process and whoever wants to do this can go read up at the wiki on awkwardtv.org

1) Log in via SSH (yup it's frontrow/frontrow)
2) load on ATVFiles, ATV-shareMounter and perian (for XviD/DivX playback)
3) set up ATV-shareMounter to mount your NAS on boot. It supports AFP (including Airport Disks) and SMB shares. Mine happens to be a 400GB airport disk which I mount using it's bonjour location, login and password.
4) set up ATVFiles to point the folder you want to use on your mounted NAS drive. You also may want to set up the preferences not to display file extensions, etc.
5) Throw your files on your NAS and that's it! I have my 200 DVDs ripped via handbrake on there with cover art and all.

Oh and the best part... it cost less than that $899.00 linux media PC they showed in this episode as well. Plus it can be done in a way as to not open the machine or void the warranty! NAS can be upgraded with additional storage when needed in the future and you aren't limited to what a small 2.5" laptop can hold or the standard 40GB size of the AppleTV.
(To mod without opening simply follow directions to boot Mac OS X off of a USB drive and then copy ssh and stuff over once booted into OS X. Unplug the USB HDD and no one will know what you did)

Good show guys, that's probably the best one I've seen yet.

LOL@Jessica on the blooper at the end hahaha, that's something I would have expected Wil to say actually... you need to crack some jokes on the show Jessica because we all know you can now.

Poor Hahn, seems like you've been ripped off a time or two or perhaps made a bad purchase... probably not with the Apple TV though, I think you can take comfort with that call.

I'm starting to get disappointed in this show. Not the actors, but the products for review. You guys only do 2 "media player" devices, and split them into two segments.

And what is the deal with all the car segments? Seriously, there are more products out there that are not for your car.

That's cool; if I'd known you guys were here, I would have wandered over to the shop and said hi. Thanks for stopping by, and glad you liked the car! Too bad you were here before the green one arrived...

I caught the latest show and one thing that I'm really in the market for is a PVR that can sync to my iPod. I saw the Interact-TV and while the reviews weren't good but I thought maybe I could run MythTV on it and make it work...then I saw the price...ouch.

There have been a few PVRs on inDigital, have you ever thought of having a competition? I'd love to see Hahn, Jessica, and Wil go head to head on a tight budget to find the best consumer PVR possible. Similar to the home theater completion only on a more realistic budget.

Just jumping on board as a newbie to this forum. I'm old-school tech since before the days of BBS systems and Apple ]['s. In the 25+ years I've been a hobbyist/semi-professional PC Tech/Multimedia Artist, I've had a few industry jobs here and there around the US, but none that really encompassed everything I love and adore doing with PC-based technology and the artistically creative end thereof. So I remain to this day a hobbyist with all the creativity, energy and curiosity of a newbie, whilst simultaneously being so jaded about the industry that I have no real drive to succeed professionally (usually happily doing most or all of my work for others gratis - though I still have dreams of actually being able to make a living at it... gotta love that dichotomy).

After viewing some the most recent installation of InDigital (Ep 15) and perusing the archives, I've bookmarked the site for current and future interest. Nothing quite like on-demand targeted content hosted by real folk to make it worth booting up and poking your head out of the bi-layered firewall.

As time permits, I'll pop in and drop some observations and comments about shows and/or current threads of interest. Greets fly out to Wil, Jessica, Hahn and the InDigital production crew. Should you ever find yourselves in need of an off-camera annoucer VO (for God knows why...), give me a shout (currently assembling a demo reel). I absolutely love to contribute where my knowledge and talents are found to be of value.

Blessings,

VEKdigital

speaking of the Tesla Car since Han was talking about how he didnt like fact that the sounds would be gone from sports cars

well I cant wait until a rich geek hooks something up to the RPM gauge in the Tesla and uses it to play car sounds out the speakers that are in tune with how the car is driving

so we dont have to make "vroom vroom" and "ert" sounds when we drive then in the future like will said

Check out www.theaircar.com as the only true Zerro Emission transportation technology available!

Going to drive that in Cannes France should be high on your priority list. :D
