View Full Version : Favorite Comic Art (and Artists)

In another thread, we were discussing our divergent tastes in comic art - how it was easier for us in this community to agree about whether a story is good than it is to agree on the art. In that spirit, let's discuss our art tastes by talking about our favorite artists and why we love them.
If you need a prompt to recall certain artists, check out Wikipedia's article - American comic artists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_comics_artists).
You might also like to include examples of art in your posts.

My tastes in art are wide and varied, but my all-time favorite comic artist is...

I started a thread in the same vein as this a couple of weeks back, except it was more about ones we hate...... i dunno how similar it is to what you were thinking, but take a look:

It may be too similar (I'll let Conor be the judge), but I edited my original post to focus on our favorite artists. Thanks, Mike.

Oh, took a bit to find the pics, but here we go:
Alex Maleev – Bendis and Maleev have a special place in my comic-collecting heart b/c their work on Daredevil was probably the title that got me back into comics back in college. I was doing an art minor at the time and I found Maleev’s art to just be so different from other artists I had grown up with. It was very non-traditional and somewhat “ugly” but became even more beautiful the more I looked at it. The DD run with the child in the hospital totally did it in for me as he amazingly illustrated the child’s imagination. His art has changed a little bit for mass consumption, but still stands out on its own.

Tony Moore - My only exposure to him is on The Walking Dead, but even with one arc, he became one of my favorite artists. I find it to be very crisp and clean and just what I think of when I think of comics. Some of his scenes are heartbreaking and greatly show emotion, and his covers are wonderful.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/175/470284137_d27262fdb5_o.jpg
Leinil Yu – Amazing at drawing kinetic scenes and his work always seems to have this distinct “sketchy” feel to it. A perfect pick for New Avengers, with its dirty messy look. He could completely forget to erase his sketch marks and I totally wouldn’t notice (or care). This pic isn’t his best, but I think one of his funnest.
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/218/470276678_688ca2587a_o.jpg
Jim Lee – I totally associate x-men with Jim Lee’s art. Maybe because I was a young teen when he was drawing Jean Grey and Psylocke.

(Sorry, had to split this to two posts.)
Jeff Smith – As a lot of the art got more and more complex, Bone was so refreshing to me because it showed me that you didn’t necessarily need color or complex sketches to create beautiful stuff.

I tend to enjoy all kinds of art. It sounds bad, but for the most part, I break it down as "Does the story make sense, do I understand what the artist is doing?" Then I can go with it. But that means I might enjoy it, art I love is all over the place.
The only artist I found I could never enjoy is Chris Bachelo, I'm not sure why, but I've just never had. And Salvador Laroca is hit and miss.
But, fav artist:
Tim Sale, Bruce Timm, The Kuberts, JR JR, Yu, Sean Chen, Frank Cho, Steranko, Neal Adams and of course Kirby, the King.

I'm really starting to like Skottie Young,i think its due to the fact that he's drawing a younger team,New X-Men. I couldn't seem him doing JLA or the Avengers due to the style. But i think he does this well, hey maybe the Titans.:-)

Favorite artist? Hm.. The artists that are my all time favorite, meaning, I will buy what they are drawing regardless who's writing the story are:
George Perez: http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/acomicbookgirl/georgeperez.jpg
I recently got this issue. This is one of the DC postage stamps. I remember having George Perez signing the page in the book I had it and he was so happy.. I remember reading Crisis on Infinite Earths.. The first I read it, I didn't care for the stories, I was in awe of the art.. My day was made when this came out.. I mean who can say no to this? http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/acomicbookgirl/AVENGERS_JLA_3_t.jpg One of my all time favorites artwise..
Phil Jimenez: http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/acomicbookgirl/philjimenez.jpg
Coincidentally, they are my favorite writers and artists for Wonder Woman. I also loved the issues Phil Jimenez did for Grant Morrison's run on New X-men.
I can never say no to any of their stuff..
I like Quitley but only if he's doing Grant Morrison's stories..
http://i151.photobucket.com/albums/s121/acomicbookgirl/frankquitley.jpg
I know there's more but those stick out of my mind at the moment..

I want to say he did some of those advertisements for DC's Countdown, I'm thinking the Jimmy Olson one for sure. I don't know if he's doing any current series.

Jim Lee is probably one of my favorites but lately I've been really impressed with Dale Eaglesham on JSA. The man draws a gorgeous book.

Far as I'm concerned, JH Williams III is at the top of the pile I see from guys today (with some hefty competition of course). Issue 32 of Promethea shows exactly why:
http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/11/promethea_poster_1.jpg
And Geof Darrow, the undisputed master of pencil details:

I'm reading some of the Lobdell/Casey WildCATS stuff right now too, and man could I use more Travis Charest in my regular visuals too:

And the indubitable Ben Templesmith:

My favorite comic book Artist (and writer coincidentally) is and always will be Mike Mignola (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Mignola).
His dark gritty look combined with his unique style of shadow and light effects never ceases to astound me, I could go to an exhibit in stare at his paintings for hours just as much as Picasso, Renoir, Van Gogh, Monet, Bernard or any of my favorite painters, which is saying something because I don't think any other comic book artist I could say the same for.

I've always been fascinated by Stuart Immonen's ability to go from his style in Superman: Secret Identity to his style in Nextwave.

Thanks for the welcome. Did you see the preview pages for Stuart's first issue on USM? He's changed his style again just for the book which is awesome. This guy is an art chameleon.
I've seen them. They're awesome. I think we actually have a thread about it around here somewhere. He is very versatile.

If I weren't at work I'd dig up some Liefield just to give someone an aneurysm. Or Ramos, but I like Fred...
In all seriousness though, I've always been a sucker for any Jim Lee stuff. I also love Perez' Avengers work as well.

With all these writer polls going, I figure we might as well look into the great artists of today. Personally I would have to go with Alex Ross as my favorite. The realism and depth of his painting just blows me away. Painted comics have never looked so good.

im really more of a writer centric guy, very rarely will i buy a book based solely on the artist, but a book could have the crappiest art but written by Bendis and im there. that being said i have a long list:
alex maleev
michael lark
alex ross
jim lee
tim sale
bryan hitch
steve mcniven
jae lee
john cassiday
gene ha (i love his new authority book and i will wait for that art)
ed mcguiness
jim cheung
frank cho
Frank quietly
hell thats just off the top of my head, but my favorite is constantly in flux depending on the last issue i read. I'm really diggin McNiven after Civil War, so he's probably up there and same goes for Hitch after Ultimates 2

I've never actually put a list together, so this is all off the top of my head. I know I'll probably get some grief for my list, but here goes:
Chris Bachalo
Humberto Ramos
Skottie Young
Mike Wieringo
Ed McGuinness
Jack Kirby (just getting back into his work, never appreciated how good it was before)
See a pattern? The more stylized and different the more likely I am to like it
