I am currently working five year old autistic boy. I was discussing ways to improve his reading and attention with his mother and I mentioned comic books. His mother wants to read the comics with him and thought the combination of artwork and writing was a great idea
My question is this: What titles do you folks suggest that are simply written and have simple but engaging artwork?
Thanks everyone.

What about....something like Tintin or the Tony Millionaire books (I 've only seen a sample of his Sock Monkey books, and while the vocabulary is sort of absurd and advanced, that might not be true of all his books. And the visuals are crisp and beautiful to look at.).
Or how about Calvin and Hobbes? I think it might be a good idea to ease him into comics through shorter strips first. A full page of panels might be too daunting or confusing if it's his first experience with this kind of thing.
Then there's those Scrooge McDuck comics, right? Those are supposed to be entertaining no matter the age or experience.

Yep, Fat Jack's is still around (http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=12275776). It's not where I shop, but I've been meaning to check it out.
Superheroes.....what about that Franklin Richards book? Or the JLU comic? Trying to think of things that aren't so dark.

Yeah, that's right. My LCS has a half wall devoted to them. I've just never looked at them because they're not marketed to me.
There should be plenty of things.
Marvel's line of kid-related stuff is called Marvel Adventures
Franklin Richards is also a good choice. You may actually enjoy that too. I've read it and it's cool.
