Happy Comic Book Day, everybody!

Speaking of Tijuana (from yesterday's discussion) :

What was your best vacation? Worst?

It's that time of year again.

My parents have been going on the same vacation for the past 13 years or so. Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia. I stopped going with them about 3 years ago (after the first two days I have nothing to do), and haven't been on vacation since then because I've been going to school year-round. I've gone on a trip here and there, but no real vacation. Not that I mind.

My best vacation was a cruise to Bermuda shortly after my high school graduation. Most of my best friends were on it, and we'd play cards out on the deck late into the night. We perfected a version of 'Go Fish,' called 'Go **** Yourself' while the majority of the passengers slept. I think the average age on that boat was about 80.

The first night on the island, we took notice of a beach party listed in a tourist newsletter. We followed the directions to a dark and lonely beach. There was no party to be seen. Then we saw the rickety steps leading down to a sinister little cave, where we caught the lights of a single boombox. We headed back to the ship.

My worst vacation was probably Washington DC. It was probably around the seventh grade. I went with my parents and a friend. We stayed at a Howard Johnson's and our view was a brick wall about a foot away from our window. There was a pool on the roof. We went up to investigate. Lots of astroturf, a lot of pool toys in milk crates, and a 5' by 5' square pool. I remember that there were four old guys in it and two of their wives. They said we could swim in the middle. We did not swim that weekend.

Our family used to take tons of road trips when we were younger. Looking back, I appreciated those more now than at the time.

Not to totally derail the question, but last night I had a dream about POULINE! I was looking in the kitchen closet and found that someone had put a little can of instant pouline (something like those instant mac & cheese cups). I was excited that I could finally try it out. Then I woke up.

Best vacation- Last year I went into the woods with no electronic communication for two weeks. Just me, a notebook, music, and books..and of course a tent. It was good for the soul

Worst vacation: I got stuck living in Bogota Colombia for 8 months, no seriously it was not fun.

Happy Wednesday everyone....

Best Vacation was probably traveling through Spain last year with my wife. Something new to discover every day-

Worst: Visiting LA for the first time. Supposed to stay with a friend who lived there and when I arrived I found a note on his door that he had gone to Las Vegas. That left me stranded in LA with no place to stay. Good times.

Best Vacation? Hmm... Toss up between the Philippines and San Diego..

Worst Vacation? Haven't had one yet..

I tend to go to Disneyland at least twice a year and take a day off here and there...

Are you forget the wonderful time you had in my fair city?

In fariness to your fine city, my horrid time there consisted of being lost in 'the bad part of town' from 3-7AM. The larger vacation that was part of sucked. The fun that we had was based on the fact that it sucked. We ended up a few hundred miles south of you and it made me realize that I'd rather set myself on fire than ever go south of DC again.

Happy Comic Book Day, everybody!

Speaking of Tijuana (from yesterday's discussion) :

What was your best vacation? Worst?

It's that time of year again.

Best vacation by far was last summer when me and a couple of friends backpacked across europe for 2 months and went to Berlin for a week and caught a World Cup match (brazil vs croatia). it was an unbelievable experience that couldn't be compared to any North American sporting event. i watched a Germany match on the fan mile projection screens at the Brandenberg Gate with 300,000(!!) germans. it's a shame im at work or i'd post some pics, people for miles, it was crazy!
Worst was the year before when i backpacked Europe for the first time with a different set of friends. the trip itself wasn't bad but when we got to amsterdam (party capital of europe) we pretty much stayed in our hostel, it was boring and a waste of time. i swore to myself to go back with a better group of friends (which i did the next year) and have a much better time (which i did :))

Maturing British cheese becomes Internet star

LONDON, April 25 (Reuters) - A large English cheddar cheese
has become a star of the Internet, attracting more than 1
million viewers to sit and stare at it as it slowly ripens.

First placed in front of a webcam in late December, the
Westcombe cheddar from West Country Farmhouse Cheesemakers
leaped to public attention in early February and has since
attracted viewers from 119 countries.

"The hits went over 1 million this morning. It has been a
real challenge keeping the cheese up and running with all the
interest it has generated," a spokesman for the company running
the website, www.cheddarvision.tv, said on Wednesday.

Watchers have tuned in from as far afield as Albania and New
Zealand, although most are from the United States where a school
has even sent in pictures of two crocodiles to guard the cheese.

"The whole idea was to show people how real food is made --
and it seems to be working," cheesemaker Tom Calver said. "It
takes a year for the cheese to mature. This is not fast food. It
is slow food."

Their director says he got the organization going when he came home from Iraq, and found the country wrapped up in great heated controversy over Janet Jackson's nipple. He said the disconnect was too much, so he got the group going, since vets were having all kinds of difficulties (whether financial or medical due to their service) and the country was paying no attention. I like that they are williing to hammer members of either party if they don't support vets.

You ever been there? I've got a friend who flew Cobra's for the Marines in Afghanistan and he e-mailed me every month while in-country. The place is not Iraq, yeah is's hostile and yeah things aren't perfect (an actual central govermnet would be great ya'll) but the world could only wish that Iraq was the same as Afghanistan.

Don't think that I'm trying to dishonor the Canadian soldiers that have died, my prayers are with both them and their families. But it's a war, and the unwillingness to accept the facts of war on behalf of most Western nations today seems a bit too similar to the Athenians against Sparta. And we all know how that turned out.

I think it's safe to say we all support the troops while maybe disagree about the politics. That's the tragedy for the troops -- they would probably like it for those back at home to get things sorted out while they wait for the next sniper to fire at them or a bomb to go off.

I think it really sucks to be a soldier right now, so my prayers go to them too. Soldiers take responsiblity, seems to me. Politicians taking responsiblity in both parties would be a refreshing change.

i wasn't comparing the war itself to iraq, i was comparing the loss of american soldiers relative to the loss of canadian ones. its hostile enough for the amount of soldiers we've sent there and the amount of deaths that occur.

But i agree with you six gun, this isn't the place for this type of discussion, i just wanted to bring attention to the fact that it isn't only americans and brits being lost in war on terror

yeah it's went pretty well. my biggest jolt was that all my close friends moved away while i was gone. i made alot of money when i was in my early twenties so i'm alright there. i have a recurring nightmare or two but i have had those all my life so that is nothing new. the docs say all my injuries are healed and other that some scarring i'm cool.

the interest thing is how people don't really care about this war.i chalk that up to two things. 1: the goverment is not asking anyone to give up anything like was done in WWII in fact this is the only time in history that a tax cut has happen during a war.
2: it's a tough subject for people to deal with but nowadays it is easy to just tune it out. it's not like vietnam when there was only three tv stations and they showed the war every night.

vets are really getting screwed over. the va does not have enough money to help everyone who needs it.

But i agree with you six gun, this isn't the place for this type of discussion, i just wanted to bring attention to the fact that it isn't only americans and brits being lost in war on terror

Canada has a long history of coming up to bat when needed (Normandy Breakout as one of the best examples) they may be the brunt of many jokes, but Canada is a vital part of the (I'd say pretty well-oiled economic/political)machine taht is the Western, First World. Your nation's sacrifice is not being forgotten by this Yank! :) :D

yeah it's went pretty well. my biggest jolt was that all my close friends moved away while i was gone. i made alot of money when i was in my early twenties so i'm alright there. i have a recurring nightmare or two but i have had those all my life so that is nothing new. the docs say all my injuries are healed and other that some scarring i'm cool.

the interest thing is how people don't really care about this war.i chalk that up to two things.

I second the thank you for your service. You are the only vet I've actually had anything that even resembles contact with.

I think people have no idea what to do about the war and beyond paying taxes don't know how to contribute. The relentlessly grim news from Iraq also adds to peoples dispair over it and makes them want to tune out.

That being said, literally everyone I know supports the troops in that they want them to come home safely and no longer be in harms way.

Who's crazier, Alec Baldwin or Britney Spears? I think if they were forced into a psychic battle of wills the ending would be similar to that of Scanners.

I think Britney still has a slight edge over Baldwin. Shaving her head went so far beyond the pale. Needless to say, I'm glad I'm not related to either of them.

Some words/phrases of the day from the Urban Dictionary:

1) floordrobe

A form of storage for clothing which requires no hangers, drawers, doors or effort. Simply drop on the floor and you have a floordrobe.

"We have a very stylish colonial-style his and hers walk-on floordrobe at home."

2) break your crayons

Make you very upset or sad, or ruin your whole day.

"Dude, don't worry about him, he's just tryin' to break your crayons. Just let it slide."

3) technosexual

A person, male or female, who is so deeply enthralled with technology they discuss it with a level of passion that most people reserve for sex. Not always a geek or a nerd, but generally someone who has the latest and greatest everything.

She became so excited about her new laptop and PDA that her friends knew she must be technosexual.

4) connectile dysfunction

1. The inability to gain or maintain an internet connection.
2. The inability to print, email, or get to the internet.

"My computer had connectile dysfunction (CD) yesterday, so I couldn't check my email."

5) blogorrhea

To write a blog entry just for the sake of posting an entry, not because you have done anything interesting today.

"I couldn't really think of anything good to blog about, so my last post was real blogorrhea."

Yeah, we are totally on the same page, the difference being I didn't go through what you did. Good to hear you are doing OK, if you are in contact with comrades still back in Iraq, make sure they know the American people do wish they could do more for them, I think people have just not been given a way to do that. When they do get an opportunity, it's amazing. That one old guy at Operation Helmet is a good example, he moves faster than the Pentagon. (He's a dyed in the wool old conservative Republican, but the both sides of the political spectrum love him. He's more about doing than talking, and couldn't give a hoot about politics, just want to get as many helmet linings to as many troops as possiible).

If you haven't, check out the IAVA (Stands for Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans Association, I think). I really like that group a lot, and they are strictly non partisan, built by and for the vets, totally non-partisan, owing nothing to any political group with an agenda other than helping vets.

As far as I can remember, and I can remember back to when her first album came out when I was in college (1987?). But I don't think it's congenital baldness --just an extreme statement of principle, no matter whatever that principle may be (not always sure myself). Sinead has always been about statement of principle -- figuring out what that principle is has always been the hard part... Strong headed, but highly emotional -- good recipe for crazy.

Hey 30 Rock Fans (myself included) Look at this crap:

Baldwin's request to quit sitcom denied

Divorced dad Alec Baldwin, caught yelling at his daughter on a voicemail message, said Wednesday he asked NBC to let him out of his "30 Rock" contract so he can devote his time to the issue of "parental alienation."

"If I never acted again I couldn't care less," Baldwin said in a pre-taped appearance for ABC's "The View," scheduled to air Friday.

The actor, in a transcript provided to The Associated Press by "The View," said that he also wanted to quit "30 Rock" so the sitcom and the hundreds who work on it wouldn't "be hurt by the situation."

NBC, however, quickly shot down the idea. The actor has became a key asset for the freshman sitcom, stealing the show as an oily but charming network executive overseeing a "Saturday Night Live"-type program.

"Alec Baldwin remains an important part of `30 Rock.' We look forward to having him continue his role in the show," NBC said in a statement Wednesday.

Okay. Does anybody want to finish an English paper I'm writing for my American Lit II class? Here's the thesis:

Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper and Hemingway’s The Killers exemplify the importance of narrative voice in the craft of compelling character development. While Gilman chooses a subjective, first person voice to reveal the gradual degradation of her protagonist’s psyche, Hemingway writes objectively in sparse, third person prose, utilizing dialogue to reveal relationships. Though their styles are far removed from the other, this reliance on voice is crucial to both writers’ intentions.

Make sure to reference scholarly articles--at least two. It should be around 1000 words, MLA format. Due tomorrow at 3:00.

I've actually done a lot of these. I was on my way to a degree in english(I can eat air) when I transferred to Computer Science. I hate research papers. They're bullshit. Literature is subjective. I don't care to prove that I'm an unoriginal bastard with thoughts that everyone else has. This is what I used to do in situations like this:

You've been asked to use two sources. Search the database for narrative style + Gilman and then repeat with Hemingway. Use four sources and take sparingly from each. In the end, make it more about what you think. The sources don't necessarily even have to be in context. The professor can't check them all and with four sources you make yourself less likely to get checked.

kill that shit - it's relatively short

I think it's all about how your brain works. I'm a very nuerotic organizer, my excel budget is a thing to behold. I really do enjoy it, not just "Oh I want a nice paying job out of college". Although, my real little secret dream is fashion design ie - owning my own boutique. But I figure the accounting can only be helpful in that in the meantime (business experience as well as building a nest egg to spend on the initial investment).

I was film and video production for most of my freshman year. Switched over to Screenwriting after taking a really great Playwriting course. My program is a BS as opposed to a BA, so I was still stuck with physics and a math course. And as a screenwriter I had to take a lot of writing intensive courses.

I'm not graduating on time because I have to make up two 4 credit Design classes (doing grayscales out of magazine clippings).

I ended up with an Art History minor (almost by accident; the minor can be achieved with fun electives like 'The Film Western,' 'Hitchcock,' and my current 'Japanese Cinema.')

It's not that I'm BAD at math per say... it's just that the basic classes rarely ever explain WHY things work the way they do mathematically. That's the only way my brain can remember things. I can't memorize formulas for anything, it has to be something I can know how to derive on the spot.

Funny thing, is after now 5 years in accounting related jobs, I believe accounting has very little to do with math. More about just knowing the rules as to where the numbers go. 10-keys and excel basically make having to know the math obsolete.

I try to write well on here simply because I know that there are so many eloquently expressed views from the other posters. That's where I sort of stalled on that little write-up. I was going to give an example.

"What loftier subjects do we talk about?"

No, but I think we do have a good discourse on why a book is good or bad. As opposed to the alternative hyperbole and bigotry out there. And that's been brought up before, but it's true.

haha so diplomatic.

Forgive me. I'm in term paper mode. All my papers, no matter the subject matter, end with a Braveheart-esque rally cry. Takes a long time to type up, what with the one fist in the air.

my first job was as a programmer on the sport project for the brady and m1a2 main battle tank. it was very interesting.

sounds cool. I'm working on something right now that I can't talk about but I expected it to be really cool. It sucks now that I'm doing it though.
