For full-blown desktop live cd's I'd say give Ubuntu and PCLinuxOS a try. The spectrum of specialized live distros is huge. Depending on what you want to do there's probably a iso for you.
Distrowatch.com has a nice little search interface you can use to get a basic description of available live cds:

I would recommend that you download whatever live CDs look good to you and give them a try. You're not really losing out on anything by doing it that way.
And as th3_anomoly said, distrowatch is your friend.

Dont know what kind of music you listen too but I just got the new Kenny Chesney LIVE cd and its great. Well its great for someone that likes country music. My wife and I have been to 3 of his concerts and loved them all. This live cd does a great job of capturing that atmosphere.

I have SLAX Frodo on my USB drive but does anybody know a good security live CD? I have used lots like Auditor & knoppix std but it seems they change so fast. What is the best these days?

theres a script that turns a normal install into an iso. this way you can install what you want and need and just make a custom disk. and if you dont want to do that, i think its auditor is the good one

I believe that Auditor has merged with another distro and is now BackTrack.
You can find it here: http://www.remote-exploit.org/

Knoppix
Whoppix
Knoppix STD

I haven't burned any new versions lately, so the existance of these distros are in question.

It would be really helpful if you could link to the things you talk about.

I stumbled upon a big list (currently 310) of Live CDs (http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php) when downloading BackTrack if anyone's interested :)

I recommend
PCLinuxOS (My personal favorite) has a good community.
I do not recommend Ubuntu only because of the desktop manager, but I do recommend some of their sister projects in Kubuntu (Ubuntu base but with KDE instead of GNOME) or Xubuntu (Xfce on top of Ubuntu for speed and compatibity on old hardware) looks nice.
