Who is buying Windows Vista?

And if you are, when?

Or if your not, are you going to, um, obtain it somehow else?

I wont buy it. My friend will buy it tho lol I will check it out on his system to see if I like it. But I am almost sure I will dual boot XP with linux and use linux 99% of the time unless I need to boot into windows to play a game or something.

Vista for me I don't think will be worth spending the money on it.

Yes, I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for an upgrade.

Or if your not, are you going to, um, obtain it somehow else?I am in no hurry to move. None of my current hardware is really up to spec to get the most out of Vista, so I wil wait until I either buy or build a new machine. I am more than happy with XP SP2, and since noone is forcing you to upgrade its not something I am going to rush out an do. Unlike moving to Win95, then to W2K which I did on the day of release for each of them, I waited until XP SP1 was out to take that jump, and will probably do the same with Vista.

My machines are running just fine with XP as they are. Why mess with a good thing?

Everything he said applies to me, except that bit about Win95.

PS. Nice to see a friendly face. :D

I *might* take it for free, if it came on a new system that could run it that was also free

I bought a lower end dell system to use as a linux box not long ago. 2.8ghz Pentium D. 1gb ram, etc. Not complete crap. (other then it being a dell, i'm against buying them and hated myself for weeks after buying it)

Vista RC1 would only run in non-aero mode and the machine was rated a 1 on the Vista scale.

There is no reason why the system needs that much horse power for aero. the same box runs XGL like a dream, and I just gave a 4 year old mac to my sister that runs Tiger just fine. Why can't Microsoft do this stuff?

I know my MBP could run it, but no reason to junk that system up with a dual boot that i'll never use

I will probably buy it and get the ultimate one. I am doing the RCI 1 Vista and it seems pretty cool, just the txt doesn't seemt to look so great or clear, but that may be a driver issue or something.

Im not going to buy it. If i get a legit copy for free, i'll use it. Otherwise i'll stick with XP or Linux.

I don't plan on buying it..nothing about it really tells me it's worth it..I will stick with my XP media center OS for a while.

And to those who wnt to "obtain" it..good luck since Vista will check often automatically and you can't change this to see if it's a valid legit version..if not ..say bye bye to your "obtained" Vista.

you don't think any protection they have on it will get cracked. I give it a month TOPS before they find a way around that

They should just go one of 2 routes though:

1. The OS X route, drop the price to a reasonable level, no activation, registration, serial numbers, anything. Do what you will. I paid for it, its mine, no worries.

2. Make a basic version that is insanely cheap with no activation, or plain free. It would be good enough for the average user, boost company image, keep people from pirating or moving to linux for the cost savings, etc.

I am sure it will be cracked ..but until then best not try and obtain it just yet.

I don't know what my Next OS will be...Vista does not appeal to me very much ..few years when i am ready to change..I might stay windows or go linux or even go Mac.

I'll just get it for free when it come out, Or I'll have it shipped to my offices so we could test it. I am using it on Boot Camp and so far its crap, and it will probably stay as a crappy product.

Waiting untill SP1 arrives for Vista before I even touch it (if it's anything like MS's other OS's then might even wait untill SP2 if need be).

Also the lack of any benefits uprading to Vista (minus the fact that I can look forward to increased memory usage and a slower operating system...).

I'm not buying it. I'm going to have my Mac by then. But since I'll keep my PC for work, I might get it *somewhere,* though I don't see a need to get it at all.

I'll probably download it and let it sit on my PC for a bit. I hear right now it takes about 1 GB of ram just to have it run with everything on. (shaders, menu options, etc)

I'm also gonna wait till everything is mostly compatible with it. So I'm in no rush to get it and install it when it comes out. I also hear theres gonna be 7 versions available which is just nuts.

It's been cracked already, and has been for ages. Look up the latest eth0 crack.

MS can't go the OS X route and lock it into hardware, that's another downside of being popular - cant upgrade without having to keep compatibility.

you need 1gb of ram and a new dual processor system. as stated above, it doesn't run on a 2.8 Pentium D w/ 1gb ram

The Dell system in question probably just didn't have the video acceleration needed for Aero.

I suspect I will buy it somewhere down the road. I'll probably wait for at least a year though. I'm thinking pirating it may just be a bigger pain in the ass than I want to deal with this time around.

 I have "Vista ready" Dell and it uses Pentium D 930 3ghz with a 1gb of memory and 256mb 7300 nvidia then did the MS system scan to see if vista will work on my PC..said everything was fine...said I could run as high as the premium version (though I bet sluggish on premium)

Even if not oh well, does not bother me...I like XP

Someone lied to you. RC1 64-bit took up only about 300 MB on RAM on mine with everything turned on. and 64-bit versions tend to use more RAM then 32-bit ones.

I have a 4200+ X2 (2.2 Ghz Dual-core), 1.5 Gb RAM, and a GeForce 7300 GT. I got a 3 on the rating thing, and only because I'm running single channel memory, havn't had money to get a dual channel kit. The rating goes to the lowest of the 5 things it checks. 3 being the RAM speed and then the others were 4.5 and up. With data transfer rate being highest with 5.8 So ratings can be skewed.

Honestly if you can I would suggest taking it for a test run with RC1. Honestly it's an improvement over XP, but it's not like a massive leap. It's more like when they went from 95 to 98. When some people expect it to be like when they went from 3.1 to 95.

Sup,
Personally, I would be sceptical of an O.S that needs 1G to boot.

From where I stand it looks as if Vista is another vehicle of DRM. I think the main

reason M$ products are proprietary is FOSS developers would die gut-laughing if

they looked at the code base.

synack.

I installed Vista because my wife bought it and liked the look of it. It worked for a while and started giving me problems. I eventually went back to XP, which has its issues as well, so I tried Ubuntu....arghh.. here's an article My Rant (http://itberandom.com/2008/02/vista-vs-ubuntu-my-rant/)I wrote.

Suffice to say, I'm on Vista right now.

Yes, I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for an upgrade.

You mean you wouldn't pay $200 for a downgrade. Vista is worlds slower than XP and way less support then XP. There is nothing, and I repeat nothing, beneficial about Vista other than it's networking. That's the only thing that Microsoft seemed to pay attention to with the ease of everything (even though it spends an hour calculating time during network transfer, and yes I heard it transfers in the background while it's calculating, XP just seems to transfer faster).

Yes, this is a necro thread (over a year old), but I didn't bump it, and it's better than creating a new thread all together.

Vista is doing the job for now, with the hours at my work, that machine gets used for e-mail and Skype, that's pretty much it for now.

I just got Vista on my new machine because it is the first PC after years of Macs so support isnt an issue. If I notice that Vista really sucks as much as people say Ill put XP on there but till then. Main reason I got it is that MS is really pushing Vista hard so I figure Id should go with something MS will keep supporting. Plus they have to get things worked out eventually on it.
