I thought I'd start a thread for people to mention the their fave films that may have slipped under other user's radar. As a resident of the UK, I'm going to start with a film that was made here in 2004 called Dead Man's Shoes.

It's a slow burn movie, where you're initially thinking, where the hell is all this going, but trust me, it's a joy to watch and the build up is totally worth it for the pay off.

Dead Man's Shoes - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0419677/

Enjoy!

I'll also add:

Count Of Monte Christo - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245844/

Frailty - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0264616/

Perfume: The Story Of A Murderer - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396171/

"Frailty" was pretty good, actually.

I'll take this moment to champion the greatest B-horror series ever: "Phantasm".

28 Days Later was fairly successful here, I think. It's a great movie. Plus it featured A.M. 180 during that awesome grocery store scene. :D

I am in the States and so it wasn't like I could just go down to blockbuster and pick it up. I had no read no critic reviews of it going into it. I enjoyed it. It was no Snatch or Lock/Stock, but it was enjoyable.

As an Aussie, it would be remiss of me to not mention some local product.
Not sure how much attention this had overseas, but if you want to know what all the fuss about Eric Bana is, then check out Chopper. It's definately on my top 10 list. His performance in this is awesome. Also Andrew Dominik captured the time period in Australia perfectly. Can't wait to see his next film, "The Assasination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford".

Perfume: The Story of a Murder was pretty interesting..I liked it a lot, but it has some definite gross out moments..his birth comes to mind.

I'll throw out Me and You and Everyone We Know: http://imdb.com/title/tt0415978/

It's a pretty funny flick that I think was overshadowed by Junebug (which was also good)

Cube 3 put together a few unnecesarry details in understanding a little more about the whole cube mystery, but after seeing it I liked not knowing much better. Just like the end of Cube 2.

An amazing movie is Oldboy. It has a great revenge plot even if a bit twisted.

My favorite Cronenberg film. For a movie that is about video games in the not-too-distant future, it ends up being nothing like you would expect. Most directors would make everything futuristic and typical, but here Cronenberg makes everything natural and organic. Some of the best production design I've ever seen, the film literally lives and breathes.

some of my faves are older fantasy movies. Legend, the Labyrinth, and the dark crystal are probably my top 3 faves

Major yes to Velvet Goldmine and Me and You and Everyone We Know. Both are incredible. Here's my short list:

Series 7: The Contenders (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251031/) - released in 2001 before reality TV was omnipresent, which makes it even more creepy.

Primer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/) - this movie will break your brain--and it was made for like $3.85.

Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0165798/) - My favorite Jarmusch flick. Forrest Whitaker is amazing.

You beat me to it. This was an great film that got hidden at release b\c of the uncomfortable premise. As TRS was talking about horror films and if you you should see it or not...watch this film, it does an amazing job of setting up and pulling off a scene without ever seeing it.

MY 2 cents...It's hard to come up with a list. I see everyone else's and I go "Oh yea, that was a totally incredible movie." I guess I'm just destined to seconded other people's choices. Such as:

Brick <---If you have any love of the older film nior. This movie did a smashing job of combining the feel of those movies, but still be relevant and fast moving.

Run Lola Run <-----If you havn't seen it yet, it's a must. (Where Memento got its premise from, sort of.)

Baraka <------This movie, well not even really a movie...boy how to describe it. It's filmed all over the world, with all sorts of different cultures. There are no words spoken, only incredible music. This movie is a masterpiece of sublety. Fast motion photography of hundreds of humans crossing the streets of Tokyo followed by a similar scene of ants running 'en mass. The point of the movie is almost the similarities of not only different cultures, but of all living things. Beautiful cinematography, and music. This is one of my favorite movies.

I love all of the recommendations so far! One movie that I think should be added to the list, merely because most people don't bother watching short films, is Six Shooter (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425458/). It won an Oscar, so it definitely isn't under the radar, but if you haven't seen it your missing out.

Well, most of the suggestions I see here are pretty mainstream stuff....I mean who hasn't seen "Life is Beautiful?"

As for some often overlooked recommendations, I'd go with:

Nine Queens (http://imdb.com/title/tt0247586/) -- smart heist movie from Argentina, I believe
George Washington
(http://imdb.com/title/tt0262432/) -- slow paced movie. If you want constant action, look elsewhere. However, I think it is one of the best films to be made within in the last 10 years.
Barton Fink
(http://imdb.com/title/tt0101410/) -- I know the Cohens are HUGE, but this one flick seems to always get overshadowed by the likes of Fargo and the Big Lebowski
Lady Vengeance
(http://imdb.com/title/tt0451094/) -- Part of Chan-Woo Park's revenge trilogy. Oldboy always gets the press, this always gets cast aside.
Hustle and Flow (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0410097/) -- yeah, yeah, I know this ain't exactly "unknown," but I really like this movie. I always feel compelled to stick it on a list somewhere.

Those are the ones off the top of my head...

A few of the ones that came to mind have already been posted (especially SLC Punk!; Heroin Bob is one of my favorite movie characters of all time) but I figured I'd add a few others:

- Way of the Gun (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0202677/) (mentioned on TRS but completely amazing and underrated; worth it just to see Ryan Phillipe tell Sarah Silverman he's going to ****-start her head)
- Ghost World (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162346/) (the movie that made me fall in love with Scarlett Johansson)
- Newsies (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0104990/) (probably the last good live action Disney flick; fun musical and Christian Bale before he was psycho/batman, that's a win-win!)
- Traffic (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0181865/) (got the Oscar nod but was still an overlooked film)
- The Quick and the Dead (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114214/) (cheesy western + Sharon Stone as a hot lady gunslinger + young Leo DiCaprio + Sam Raimi = awesome)
- Eight Legged Freaks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0271367/) (the only real B-movie of this generation)

12 Monkeys (http://imdb.com/title/tt0114746/) - love.
Les Misérables (http://imdb.com/title/tt0119683/) - someone mentioned Count of Monte Cristo, another of my favorites...

Boondock Saints (http://imdb.com/title/tt0144117/) - um most people probably have seen it by now right?

A few I would have recommended have already been mentioned so I'll just second Run Lola Run, Cube and Frailty.

I also enjoyed:

Last Night (http://imdb.com/title/tt0156729/) Beautiful movie following what a few people are doing their last moments on Earth. The pacing is slow but it fits the film so well. I adore the ending, too but don't want to give it away.
Ginger Snaps (http://imdb.com/title/tt0210070/) Awesome "B" horror movies. They've made 3 if I recall correctly. I like them all though #1 is best. These girls really got to me.
Children of Men (http://imdb.com/title/tt0206634/) What would happen to us all if there were no babies to be born at all for 18 years, for no reason we can discern? There world would likely be drifting towards chaos and desperation as it is in this movie. Very moving and believable.
El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0457430/) I love this movie beyond all measure. Very dark fantasy, just the way I like it. The little girl is wonderful and the story is incredible. Great acting, directing and photography. I really believe this is the perfect movie.
Cidade de Deus (City of God) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0317248/) Based on a true story of the gangs of the 60's and 70's in Cidade de Deus, west of Rio de Janeiro. Told from Rocket's point of view - a boy trying to fight his way out of the violence of the slums.
Quills (http://imdb.com/title/tt0180073/) Geoffrey Rush plays the Marquis de Sade and he is amazing. Loosely based on the Marqui de Sade's life (and I do mean loosely) it depicts his time spent in a mental asylum where he met Abbé du Coulmier (Joaquin Phoenix - also freaking amazing in this film and sexy as hell, to boot).

Edit: Heyseuss, you necro-bumped this. :P I can see why though.

I watched this with my ex-girlfriend and we laughed at it the whole way through. We're like, what high school is this? What young teenagers act or talk like this. It was so silly to us. Yes it did nail that feel you mentioned, but the premise is just so out there and nothing in it was very believable.

Wow, there are some awesome recomendations here, I've just added alot of movies to my netflix queue. few of mine have already been suggested but I'll suggest them again anyway;

Primer; Made for $500, features no special effects, and is easily the best time travel movie ever made. It does require multiple watches to piece it all together, but that's part of its appeal.

Brotherhood of the Wolf; The guys bagged this out a while ago, but I absolutely love this movie, the visual style is brilliant, it features some kick-ass kung-fu, and Monica Belluci, where's the problem?

Wild at Heart; One of David Lynch's finest. Nicholas Cage, Laura Dern and the coolest/toughest line ever spoken in a movie.

Eraserhead; David Lynch's first movie, and the only movie I've ever seen that truly captures the surreal uneasiness of a nightmare. He really understood that nightmares come from real situations with a disturbing twist, and not monsters and ghouls.

The City of Lost Children; French surrealism at its best. A fearless young girl tries to rescue her brother from an evil scientist who is stealing childrens dreams, beautiful and disturbing.

Oldboy; A very twisted tale of revenge.

Thats all I can think of right now, hope someone finds some enjoyment from these suggestions...

Means you've been part of passive necrophilia.

Doug Anthony All Stars anyone ?That is a reference that will be missed by 99.9% of the forums members :)

Loved them on The Big Gig.

BTW - Blockbuster (USA) FTW ... but only if you live near a store and go in and exchange movies there as well. I confused the hell out of one local Blockbuster store when I asked if they would accept a card from another store ... and gave them my membership card from Australia (Kew? Glen Waverley?)

House 2: The Second Story for one reason. John Ratzenberger (Cliff from cheers) makes an appearance as a Electriction/Adventurer. And I quote "There it is. Looks like you've got some kind of alternate universe in there or something. " I cant believe i bought this movie for a 30 second scene.

"I have a hammer".

Good reasons to stay in on the weekend were them and The Late Show, (I remeber when they were just D-Gen).... followed by Rage ! Rage f'ed up my sleep patterns so much. Alright, I just made myself sad, must go dig through some old VHS's.

Edited movies, high prices, apathetic docker wearing staff and studio deals. Can't you get Netflix ?

Did the card work ?

When I didn't live 'in' los angeles but was 'living' in a hotel for 7 months, I was right next to a blockbuster and rented a playstation. When it came time to return it, and the games, I realised I'd gotten the games from a farther away blockbuster than the console. Went for a drive and returned the games, got back to the nearby one and was told that I had to return the console by 8pm and I would be charged the $20 console renting fee, plus tax,.... because it was 8:06!!! Yup, that's right, I couldn't stop them either because they had my credit card info. I nicely said "c'monnnnn", but manager didn't budge, so I knocked over a pole in thier parking lot.

Ah!!! I couldn't think of the name of that movie...I remember House 1 was pretty friggin' scary and House 2 was funnier than heck...I don't know if they meant it that way...I don't think that I loved a skeleton ghost thing as much as gramps...Well the Crypt Keeper and gramps are neck and neck...er bone and bone...Anyway, thanks for the walking down memory lane with me...

I also agree with everyone who said Old boy. It's riveting and quite disturbing. You know a film is good when it is plagiarized and a shitty Indian version is made.

Old Boy and City Of Gold also get my vote, there's also a City Of God series available on DVD.
