Hello all, I just had my XBox 360 flash the red ring of death on me. I purchased it back at launch so it is out of warranty. I know Jeff recently said on the show that this happened to him and I am wondering if anybody out there has any advice on getting this fixed. I don't currently have the energy to call MSoft and ***** so that will have to wait till tommorrow.

Does anybody know if I have a chance of getting this fixed or am I gonna have to buy a new one?

Thanks!!

my 360 did that when i was in iraq, turns out all i had to do is spray compressed air all over the place to get all the dust out, and it went back to normal. another time it did it when i forgot to plug in the video plug to the back of the 360 all the way in.

Just thought I would keep this updated in case anyone wants a first hand report of the repair process.

May 5th - Called 1-800-4MYXBOX Told my 360 is under warranty and they would send an empty box for me to put the 360 in and send to them(All postage paid). Would either repair or send me a replacement system.

May 11th - The empty box finally gets delivered by UPS. I package my 360 and send it back same day.

May 16th - Upon daily check of my tracking # with UPS I see that my 360 was delivered to Microsoft today.

In case of a gaming emergency, use the towel trick..It worked for me until I got sick of it and finally called microsoft for a repair/replacement.

There are different kinds of red rings, the one that kills your system happens when the system overheats to the point where the cores stop working. For instance, you will get a red ring if the power surges while it's on, this is not the red ring of death, each light pattern corresponds to a certain problem.

Had our work 360 give us a rrd. An error that had to do w/ vid output, obviously a bad solder point. It was 1 of the launch consoles. Called XBox they said it was covered and that they would send a shipping box. Got it within 4 days and shipped it the same day. It took a full week to make it to their center in TX. Once it got there it literally took 2 days(as the MS rep said it would) for repair then shipped back w/in 3 days. Quicker than it took to get there. So far no problems with the new box. It's actually a different 360 box than the one we sent(diff serial).

All I can say is that Douglas Adams was right, a towel is the single most usefull item in the galaxy

For the humble towel can fix a 360 (http://thexboxdomain.net/2007/01/15/the-towel-trick-fixes-360s/)

Both I and a friend got the red ring of death last week--when we both did the spring update.

Another friend had two broken 360's. The first one he plugged it in and got the red ring of death. He sent it to be fixed and then three months later that one broke. He sent it back again and traded in at EB for a PS3.

Another friend his broke little over a year. Then another friend that works at EBgames his broke three months after the launch. Another friend his CD drive broke.

My 360 sucked--I would get lockups all the time.

Once I get my 360 back I'm going to sell it with all my XBOX 360 and XBOX 1 games and buy a PS3.

If you really want a 360--just wait until the 65nm nanometer chips are out. Microsoft is saying this fall they will be out. I would wait until X-Mess--just to be on the safe side that all the stock inventory of the old chip set has been sold.

My Xbox 360 got the Ring of Death a about a month ago. It kept freezing while starting up and it ended up freezing on the Xbox 360 boot screen. After that kept on happening I got the Ring.

My box was still under warranty. i had it for almost a year. But I got mine back a few weeks ago and I've been playing it tons since. I didn't know how much I'd miss it. So I got my Xbox back and a free month of xbox live and I play my console every day like it's its last.

don't let MS trick you into thinking that the new xbox 360 elite is any better. My friend has already had to go through two of them!

Round One: improperly pushed the HDMI video and gave a distinct red tint
-tried reseating cables, no change
-tried different HDMI tv, no change

Round Two: fans always run at high-speed (very noisy)
-no matter what the system was doing, the fans always ran at high-speed (not normal)
-methinks that the machine was not properly thermally calibrated.

When you think of it PS3 really is not that bad for $600.00 dollars. If you pay 50 dollars a year for Xbox Live--thanks $600.00 dollars for four years for a 360.

You pay Sony $600.00 you get a Blu-Ray player, wireless and free online. Plus the PS3's are not breaking down.

Or you could get a Wii. Wii's are not having problems also.

I had the exact same problem with mine! I thought I was doing the right thing by sending my Xbox 360 off for repairs with Microsoft, so thats where the problems started. After waiting for it's return for 3 weeks I called to find out where it is, they advised me that it had been sent the day previous so I waited a week and when nothing turned up i called again this time to find out that it had somehow been sent to some random address in another state. Finally after almost 3 months of waiting it turns up and the bloody thing still hasn't been fixed.

By this time I am screaming at the people on the other end of the phone!

We ended up getting a new one and after about two weeks we had the goddamn Red Ring of Death...again!

I'm not that savvy with hardware but I thought I would take stab at fixing it myself no way was I gonna wait another 3 months. I found one of those e-book guides that also came with instructional videos, Lo and behold I fixed it myself (a very proud moment). So if anyone is out of warranty and feels like having a go I seriously suggest giving it a try, if I can do it you sure can. The site that I went to was http://www.xbox-360-repairs.com

Anyways thought I would have my say, hope it helps someone like it did me

The best fix is a new $199 Jasper Arcade 360. The second best fix is to do a combination of reflowing the CPU and GPU and x-clamp replacement. I do about 30 to 40 4rrod repairs a week and this method seems to be the best I have found so far.

This is of course if your console is past the 3 years Microsoft warranty.

Spam alert!

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm not willing to click on a crazy link from a first time poster with the name of anarchy.

Yes, I would not click on that. I'd say repair via MS or buy a new one is the way to go. I wouldn't go digging in your xbox yourself unless you moonlight as a technician or an electrician.

I clicked it. I run Linux, I doubt even if it auto-launched a virus that it'd be targeted to my OS.

It redirects to 3redlightfix.com, which tries to get you to sign up for $29.95 for a repair guide or something for broken 360s. I'm guessing the link above is a referral link so the tool who posted it gets a cut in any sales he/she manages to generate.

Microsoft is giving every XBOX 360 a three year warranty from the date of purchase.

From the date of MANUFACTURE not purchase.

I'm on #4 with less than a 10 months of warranty left.

This year the 3 yrs will be up on a lot of the extended warranty repaired boxes. Then we'll see some screaming when the barely fixed replacements they got the last time all break. If the failure rate for new 360's is 30-70% (best I can remember), the failure rate for replacement 360's must be in the 90% range. So I'm 100% x3.

I'll be joining the class action.

This is really just an astonishing problem. I am a bit confused as to why M$ has not released a new hardware revision of the Xbox. There's been like 3 PS3 hardware updates - why haven't they put together a proper box and put it on the market? They just did the cost analysis and realized that people will continue buying/playing without complaint so why change?

I was very close to getting an Xbox a while back, but these problems and a couple other little issues held me back. Am I alone?

Well, at least M$ gives you a free month of Live membership for the time that your Xbox is off for repair. I think 2 or 3 would be more appropriate.

Nope. I have thought about it in the past, but it's still overpriced, IMO. Especially for such unreliable hardware. There are only a small handful of games that I can't get anywhere else, and I'm already drowning in unfinished games for the systems I own. Still, I would like to play through Gears of War and Shadow Complex. Some day... Maybe.

Ya, a month ago I decided to buy a console. I was hesitating between PS3 and the 360. I finalyl went with the PS3 because of all those stories of failures and because since I'm not a hardcore gamers and most of my friends don't have any gaming console or if the they do they don't play that much, I prefer the free online. Also, Blue-Ray was a + for the PS3.

i think the circle that you run with has a lot to do with what system you end up buying. I chose the xbox 360 because all my friends have xbox 360. The only issue I've had were a couple of unplayable games (still can't play fable 2 without it crashing, Halo 3 when I first got it but returned it and got a replacement). My brother got red ringed but he sent his box in and got it back within 2 weeks so no worries.

when it was xbox vs PS2 I chose the xbox because of the hard drive and I was sadly disappointed with the system and games, I feel like I made the right choice this time around.

I just realized that the PS3 wasen't my first console... I own an original Xbox... but I played so little with it. Have Fable, a race game and GTAIII+Vice City. But mostly only watched DVD on it. I really should have got the PS2 instead of the Xbox. But I stopped playing when I went to university and my TV was so small that it was almost impossible to play my Xbox.. and mabye also because I started playing WoW.
