I think Pirates is going to kick Spidey's ass... possibly Harry Potter as well (since Order of the Phoenix was the best book)

Spidey may have broke the opening records, but with a very split reaction, and stiff competition in the coming weeks I think it is poised to be beaten in the long run. I think Pirates 3 will win the summer, as it has a nice bit of time until something truly big challenges it. Harry Potter will be a very close second, and could upset Pirates with the Deathly Hollows coming out a scant week before the film. Never underestimate Potter mania.

1. Pirates 3
2. Harry Potter and the OOTP
3. Spider-man 3
4. Shrek the third
5. Transformers
6. Simpsons movie
7. Ratatouille
8. Fantastic 4 2
9. Surfs Up
10. Bourne Ultimatum

Dark Horses:

Oceans 13
Evan Almighty
Rush Hour 3

Sorry Dan but anyone who doesn't think Pirates 3 will be in the Top 2 is just stupid.

Should be good to see how this will play out. Seems like Alex and Jeff are going to be most accurate. Dan's picks IMO seem more like what he likes/wants to make the most and not actually what he thinks will make the most.

I was thinkin' the same thing as I typed my list. Not to mention the fact that while Transformers isn't a sequel, it is a remake/reimagine sort of thing. Movie makers have realized that proven properties sell and are less risky, so they are ridin' them into the ground.

I hated Order of the Phoenix. Well, maybe not quite hate. But it was definitely my least favorite. I did not like Harry at all in that book. That made it pretty hard to read. But I think that the inevitable cutting up and transformation into a feature film, could possibly make the film more enjoyable than the book and thus be a big money maker.

I'm a bit surprised at the optimism over Shrek. I'll personally be very surprised if it hits even #5—I could be wrong I suppose, people being sheep and all, but the franchise just seems played out.

I'm pretty surprised, however, at the lack of promotion Pixar/Disney is giving Ratatouille. Although I guess I may just not be seeing it because I don't watch daytime TV, or much TV at all. My original suspicion was that it got the short end of the stick because it's not a sequel of some kind.

As far as Potter goes I just wish the last book would come around so we can get these silly cliffhangers done with already. My thoughts? Snape is not in fact a good guy and Harry's head is (or was) a Horcrux.

It's not just how Hollywood has changed, but what people are willing to go pay and see. Most of Hollywood is about the numbers (in a very cold and hard sense). Voting with your dollar is the loudest most people will ever be and companies notice.

I think it also speaks to alternative forms of entertainment creeping in (mostly the internet).

So, if you want more "quality" films, go out and see them and tell your friends!
Same goes for podcasts and what not... the big wigs will start to notice and hopefully the general TV/film/enterainment experience might become a bit more democratic (and much more niche).

I say this despite where I work ;] I've held these opinions much longer...

Welcome to the TRS forums!

The more I think about it, the more I realize that I and many others (definitely the majority of the awesomtasticly rad community here) are not representative of your average Joes and Josephines that populate the US. Unfortunately this results in what you see on the billboard top 10 and what's shown on most movie screens.

I'm just cynical and I think that entertainment is very well-democratized, it's just that what is popular is not alway good and what is good is not always popular. I guess it's not so much about how Hollywood keeps churning out crap, but rather how eager your average American consumer is ready to eat it up.

Then again, keeping indie indie is probably a good thing. It's like the time I went to see Lost in Translation with a good friend and his semi-retarded (not literally of course) cousin. After the movie he and I were talking about the nuances of the lighting and editing while he expressed his deep appreciation for the movie with, "man that girl had some nice ass and titties." *heavy sigh* Of course it's the exceptions like My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Supersize Me that make it worthwhile to evangelize movies to friends (even if they bring their retarded cousins :S) and bring them from a "limited release" to thousands of screens.

OH! and don't forget to vote for Ender's Game (http://revision3.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6451) for the next Book Club selection. [/shameless Ender's Game campaigning]

This is very true. Many people I know have near-inverse lists of "movies worthwhile." To a degree I think it is a difference in priorities and how seriously they take the movies. To them it's not really a medium to look for depth in storytelling or a visual craft, it's just an extension of the sit down and turn your brain off entertainment they get via the TV.

Well I liked Pirates 3 AND Spiderman 3. Most of the time I am not wanting to go sit in the theater to watch a movie with subtle nuances, I 99% of the time go with friends to have a good time.

Who doesn't go to the movies to have a good time? Doesn't change the fact that those two movies were huge disappointments. Pirates could've been the greatest trilogy since Lord of the Rings (:P), but they totally messed up with 2 and 3.
Still entertaining enough, but both those movie could've been so much better.

Spider-Man 3 was just some of the worst writing in a movie ever. GOD awful!

I enjoyed Spider-Man 3 immensely, but you all know that already, so lets not open that can of worms again. However, I enjoyed Pirates 3 as well. It wasn't amazing, but it was really good. My only huge gripe was the whole calypso storyline. It felt really unecesary and it fell through at the end and went no where. Other than that, I actually enjoyed the political intrigue, and this film actually made me not hate Will Turner, who I had despised since the first film.

Personally I found the Calypso bit of the story line one of the more interesting in the third installment. It worked on two levels; one, it gave a nod to the origins of some of the other story lines in Odysseus' voyage home in the Odessy, and two it was a solid reference to the later use of Caliban in Shakespeare's Tempest and Browning's Caliban upon Setebos as a personification of the mother of aborigines in the colonial era and later of the slave trade.

Likely, being a Disney movie, this subtle reference was their way of getting around the fact that they couldn't really portray the realities of how the money they were pirating was being made. (The East India Companies were the originators of the African Slave market, if my memory of history serves properly).

It's true, the sad thing is, booking $$ on an already proven (or in many cases, not even proven) movie make monetary sense to the film distributors. Why risk losing money on a film no one had heard about when you can easily make another $50 million on Fantastic Four 2, good or bad?

Now, I like all sorts of movies. The best thing is, I am getting a house built right now that has a basement so I can have a full up movie theatre down there. The only time I'll ever have to go to the theatre again will be to see IMAX films (which I'll pay the extra $$ to see). But, this way, no interruptions from rude folks, no having to get to the theatre 1 1/2 hours early to get a good seat for a premiere. Ohhh, I can't WAIT! And it will be at least 7:1 Surround and, eventually, THX certified. Boo-ya! :)

I was just about to go into a loooong explanation of why I think you're wrong about Snape…

I reread book 6 since 7 is coming around, and having at least forgotten consciously of your comment I had a bit of a similar inkling myself (suggestion enough to reset assumptions? Likely). And of course thinking about it, I did a bit of a search, and it turns out JK Rawlings has made a comment on this topic. I won't quote the comment as it's readily available and certainly a spoiler.

After watching it, I have to say that my money would be on Transformers topping the charts for the summer blockbusters.

Spidey? Really? I knew it was big, but I figured word of mouth would stop people in the end.

One could say the same about Shrek—That was the biggest surprise for me.

Is there a site that has all the latest figures?

The Hollywood Reporter estimated that the total box office has reached a record $4.11 billion this summer, led by the sequels Spider-Man 3 and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. The total take surpasses the $4.009 billion record set during the summer of 2004,

Superbad, from producer Judd Apatow, became only the third film in this competitive summer to reign as leader of the pack for two weekends in a row, with a domestic total of $68.6 million.

The Aug. 24 weekend marked the seventh weekend in a row in which box office was stronger than the comparable weekend a year ago. The 108 films tracked by The Hollywood Reporter collectively grossed $108.5 million, a 5 percent improvement over the $103 million grossed during the comparable period in 2006.

Ok, so judging movies based on total cash raked in for films released between June and August in the USA, we have the following stats:

1. Spider-Man 3 $336,530,303
2. Shrek the Third $321,012,359
3. Transformers $310,136,000
4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $308,289,672
5. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $286,070,000
6. Ratatouille $200,726,000
7. The Bourne Ultimatum $199,603,000
8. The Simpsons Movie $177,696,000
9. Knocked Up $148,127,000
10. Live Free or Die Hard $133,239,702

---

11. Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer $131,451,007
12. Rush Hour 3 $120,416,000
13. Ocean's Thirteen $116,934,657

http://www.boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2007&p=.htm

Now to be fair, movies released in August maybe haven't completed their full run, but I doubt there's going to be much movement in the list above.

This was my original guess:

1. Shrek 3
2. Pirates 3
3. Spiderman 3
4. Transformers
5. The Simpsons
6. Harry Potter
7. Ratatoullie
8. Fantastic 4
9. Surf's Up
10. Bourne Ultimatum

Dark Horses

Ocean's 13
Rush Hour 3
Die Hard 4.0

I'm pretty pleased with that, as I got 8 of the top 10 movies correct. Surf's Up seems to be the movie that underperformed this summer, while Knocked Up totally overperformed (justifiably so if word of mouth is to be believed). Nice to see I only got one movie wrong for the top 13 (Surf's Up). Didn't manage to get any positions totally spot on though.

Well, I pretty much got pwned on my list....I only got two completely right. I did nail Spidey as number 1, though, so I'm pretty happy about this...considering I loved that film.:p

My top 5 picks for the summer were
1) Spider-man 3
2) The Transformers
3) Shrek 3
4) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
5) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

and the top 5 for the summer were
1) Spider-Man 3 $336,530,303
2) Shrek the Third $321,012,359
3) Transformers $310,136,000
4) Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $308,289,672
5) Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix $286,070,000

So I got Shrek and Transformers backwards but I'd say that is pretty darned good!

Not bad, not bad if I do say so myself...

Just came across this...

Shrek the Third and Transformers helped boost Paramount Pictures to the top of the box-office heap this summer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Paramount sold $727.3 million worth of tickets, led by DreamWorks Animation's third Shrek movie (the second-highest-grossing film of the summer, with $320.7 million) and the DreamWorks/Paramount co-production Transformers (third overall, with $310.6 million). Paramount was the only studio with two $300 million-plus winners, the trade paper reported.

Universal Pictures took second place with The Bourne Ultimatum, Knocked Up and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. (Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.)

Walt Disney Studios scored with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End and Ratatouille, but its box-office tally was about $200 million less than the previous summer, placing it third for the summer.

Warner Brothers Pictures improved its standing, moving from fifth last summer to fourth this time around with the help of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix ($286.8 million) and Ocean's Thirteen.

The record-setting Spider-Man 3 (the summer's top-grossing movie, with $336.5 million) gave Sony Pictures a strong start, but the studio suffered after that, placing fifth.

1. Pirates 3
No way, it's not 1 or 2
2. Harry Potter 5
See above
3. Shrek 3
I have a feeling this is just right
4. Transformers
I think more people will go see this than a superhero movie this year, thinking they are different.
5. Spider-Man 3
I didn't much care for it, but it's Spidey.
6. Surf's Up
7. Ratouille
These two have to be. The kiddies are home from school.
8. Evan Almighty
Jim Carrey might be able to carry a sequel without him. The new guy is popular also.
9. Ocean's 13
I love these movies. I think the ladies like the leading men. Date movie.
10. Die Harderest (4)
It's Bruce Willis

Dark Horses
Simpsons Movie
Eh...we'll see...
F4 2
Super hero movie, nuff said
Borne Ultimatum
I'm on the edge as to whether people will go see it. I want to.
