Doesn't everyone, even her fans at some deep down level, actually want her to go to jail?
I mean, it is only going to make her more popular.
And maybe she can do another film while in there *coughs*

Morning all--another fine Wednesday--I'm happy, my wallet cries.
Yeah, I kind of agree with Ekval, I think many people take pleasure in watching Hilton suffer a bit. There's a German word for that I believe--Schodenfr-(forget it, can't spell it).
Our media culture is seems to enjoy building people up so that we can take them down. I think I'm guilty of getting enjoyment out of this too.

Good morning fellow iFanboys,
Love the name of the thread. Hermaphrohawk makes his/her reappearance on the forum.
On the Paris question, I'm not cheering that she's going to jail, but on the other hand, I have no sympathy for her. She's a spoiled heiress. She's famous for being famous. Actually, she's famous for her non-stop partying, showing her who-ha to anyone with a camera, and performing oral sex on boyfriends. I don't think 45 days in a county jail will do her any harm.

I just got the full Paris news, and she's been bad. Actually, she was driving with a suspended license the first time she got arrested with a DUI, but they missed it. Now I think it's two DUI's, and either one or two driving with suspended liscence, which all spells "I am above the law," which spells, "We are going to therefore make an example of you."
On a brighter note, the whole Paris Hilton event gave the Republican party the diversion it needed to not have its presidential candidate debate become the butt of too many more punchlines...
*sigh*
Ronald Reagan mentioned 19 times, George W. Bush mentioned twice, and Giuliani stood up as a defender of family values. This from the guy who dumped his first wife on TV, didn't he?

Seriously man...I mean, gravity and light are technically theories too. We don't know what gravity is, Newton had ideas, so did Einstein, but does that mean we can choose to disbelieve.
Pope John Paul II even acknowledge the veracity of evolution. But hey, 'believe' whatever you want, free country.

Mark Riley is now the only guy I listen to on AAR as he's the least partisan and most realistic, and one of his guests made the same points -- both the Democrats and Republican candidates are barely scratching the surface on the Iraq issue, while it still rages on, which is tragic. But hey, this far from the election, and with this many candidates, it really is the job of Congress to deal with Iraq. The candidates for President? Talk to me in one year. I thought having the debate at Reagan's library was pretty transparent. Nobody, not even conservatives, are going to buy that one.
Since so many Democrats running for President are actually current members of Congress, how they vote, and if they around to vote, in the next year should be important.
Riley had a funny remark on the evolution thing - he said three raised their hands when asked about believing in evolution, then their "knuckles hit the ground again."
That said, Japanese TV is pretty lame too. They have also refined the art of putting out pap to keep atttention away from real issues. I saw a CNN Asia interview of Prime Minister Abe and his wife, and the interviewer said, "As the First Lady of Japan, they call you the Hillary Clinton of Japan, what do you think of the comparison?"
The old guy behind the Ramen counter and I looked at each other, and were like, "First Lady what? This is the first time we've ever seen the woman's face on TV!"
(BTW, the last earthquake widely reported to have hit Tokyo was actually on the other side of the country...)
DMZ is a REALLY great book though, THAT is my thrilling latest discovery...

My sympathies on this issue is more with the residents of states like Alabama. People can choose to believe what they want, but all parents of all 50 states deserve the right to have their kids get basic scientific education, not Sunday School class Monday-Friday, as mandated by politicians with religious agenda. Sunday School is great, but great on Sunday, and for those who want to go.

Here's a weird question -- Does Darwyn Cooke and Michael Lark draw more realistic boobies than someone like Jim Lee, or am I just queer?
I was leafing through my copy of Batman: Hush before reading it, just after reading a Catwoman illustrated by Cooke, and I thought a couple of Lee's drawings of Catwoman made me think of the bulbs of those things you use to put in eye drops...
Ditto goes for those pictures advertising Thunderbolts -- Melons, yes. Eggplants even....but not real human...

Yar, Canada is out of luck, me hearties!
Warner Bros. cancels Canada previews
TORONTO - Canadian film lovers hoping to catch an early peek at "Ocean's Thirteen" and the upcoming Harry Potter sequel will be out of luck after Warner Bros. canceled all of its advance screenings and accused Canada of being at the forefront of the piracy market.
Darcy Antonellis, Warner Bros.' senior vice president of worldwide anti-piracy operations, defended the move Tuesday, saying weak Canadian copyright rules have made the country a haven for organized crime syndicates to make and sell illegal DVDs.
It is currently not a criminal offense in Canada to make recordings of movies in theaters for personal use. In order to prosecute a pirate, there must be proof that the copy of the film is being made for commercial purposes.
"Canada does have the highest camcording rate (by individuals in theaters) of any other territory," Antonellis said Tuesday by phone from Los Angeles.
"This is eliminating one of the avenues of leaks that we have already identified."
Warner Bros. said roughly 70 per cent of its releases have been pirated in Canada over the last 18 months.
The studio's ban on advance screenings, affecting roughly a dozen Canadian cities, will begin immediately. Movies affected include the upcoming Brad Pitt-George Clooney film "Ocean's Thirteen" and the hotly anticipated "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix."
The move is less severe than one proposed last year by 20th Century Fox, which threatened to push back the release date of its films in Canada over the same issue.

I would think the average kids program aimed at the same age group that video is aimed at would push tolerance, acceptance, and some basic counting skills. Maybe I'm wrong.
Makes me also wonder how much of the stuff kids see on tv soaks into their brains.

Reality Check for US peoples -- Mickey Mouse's copyright protection has expired in all countries except the US. The only reason Disney still has copyright protection (only in the US) is because Disney successfully lobbied the Republican controlled congress for an extremely unusual extension of the life span of the copyright the year it was due to expire, and Mickey was scheduled to become US public domain. Before being voted out of power, the past Congress gave Disney special copyright protection.
Disney is now officially screwed in Japan because even their movies which are over 50 years old have lost copyright protection. 50 years is the standard timespan intellectual property is given before it becomes public domain. Small time sellers can sell bad copies at the cheapest of prices, and not pay Disney a single yen in royalities, totally legit.
You decide: "The Road to 9/11," the ABC documentary which claimed it was based on the 9/11 Commission's report but was condemned by the same Commission as being full of factual errors and political bias, came out the same time as Mickey got his special copyright protection. ABC is owned by Disney.
That Hamas is using Mickey DOES seem pretty funny to me, in that people with extreme political agendas have this continual ability to be blatantly transparent and ridicuolous in their propaganda. In a way, it's kind of the M.O. of groups like that -- "We'll poop on your country and use your own icons to do it, too, so there!"
In issue 29 of 52, Ted Grant calls Infinity Inc. a bunch of 'jerkoffs'. I love Ted Grant.

I find all the Ted Grant love very fascinating, and trying not to spill over to much from the Superman thread, its interesting how Wildcat has become so popular even though he is as much a product of the Golden Age of comics as Superman or Batman. When you look that far back, you can actually find stuff that resonates with today.
It is funny that Luthor chose Infinity Inc. for his team... that is a pretty funny choice, and quite appropriate. I was going to read the old series, but I could never get past the mohawk, and I used know many people with mohawks...
Wildcat kicks ass. Paper's a big fan too.

Well, we forget how old Mickey is -- my mother is the same age, 80. I can't remember if 70 or 75 years is the maximum limit before something has to enter the public domain, but Disney got a "special right." The big corporations are really scrambling now to get some really, really old copyright laws changed, because just think -- Superman could become public domain within the next 10 years, unless Time Warner buys from Congress the same special break Mickey got. Once stuff between 1938-1945 goes public domain...Superman belongs to US. Unless Congress is bought off. This is starting to become pretty current, and I really don't like the current trend in copyright law where if you are a multimillion dollar corporation that has barely had an original idea in over 75 years, you get a special break, but the little guys gets sued by an army of corporate lawyers.
As for Hamas -- I have a feeling their continued popularity will depend alot on electricity, plumbing, and jobs. They can do all the Mickey Mouse crap they want, but I think the Palestinians basically just want jobs, electricity, and running water.
Boy oh Boy, am I a radical thinker....

I think we could have an incredibly educated, astute, and productive conversation and solve the copyright problem in a way we both agree upon, but this is my worry -- in the end, and you probably agree, corporate financial influence over Congress will have more effect than it should have. I think this is true whether Dems or Republicans are in control. After all, it was Clinton that signed what I think was the awful omnibus copyright law in 1997 or 1998.
I think internet campaigns like the net neutrality campaign are the best hope, and that one did pretty well.

From Wikipedia article:
The Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Bono_Copyright_Term_Extension_Act)—alternati vely known as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act or pejoratively as the Mickey Mouse Protection Act—extended copyright terms in the United States by 20 years. Before the Act (under the Copyright Act of 1976), copyright would last for the life of the author plus 50 years, or 75 years for a work of corporate authorship; the Act extended these terms to life of the author plus 70 years and 95 years respectively. The Act also affected copyright terms for copyrighted works published prior to January 1, 1978, increasing their term of protection by 20 years as well. This effectively 'froze' the advancement date of the public domain in the United States for works covered by the older fixed term copyright rules. Under this Act, additional works made in 1923 or afterwards that were still copyrighted in 1998 will not enter the public domain until 2019, unless the owner of the copyright releases them into the public domain prior to that. Unlike copyright extension legislation in the European Union, the Sonny Bono Act did not revive copyrights that had already expired. The Act did extend the terms of protection set for works that were already copyrighted, and is retroactive in that sense. However, works created before January 1, 1978 but not published or registered for copyright until recently are addressed in a special section (17 U.S.C. § 303) and may remain protected until 2047. The Act became Public Law 105-298 on October 27, 1998.
Background
Under the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works, the signatory states are required to provide copyright protection for a minimum term of the life of the author plus fifty years, but they are permitted to provide for a longer term of protection. Following the 1993 Directive on harmonising the term of copyright protection, member states of the European Union implemented protection for a term of the author's life plus seventy years. The United States did not become a Berne signatory until 1988, but had previously provided for the minimum copyright term the convention required in the Copyright Act of 1976.
Prior to the 1976 copyright act, many copyrighted literary works, movies and fictional characters were soon to pass into the public domain due to their 56 year maximum copyright terms. Some of these copyrighted items remained quite profitable for their copyright owners, including several characters owned by the Walt Disney Company. With the passage of the 1976 copyright act, early animated short films featuring Mickey Mouse such as Steamboat Willie and Plane Crazy would not enter the public domain until 2000 at the earliest due to their new 75 year copyright terms. Mickey Mouse and other characters also have protection as trade marks. In several countries (e.g. in Russia, where the Berne convention was not applied retroactively) Mickey Mouse and all other copyrighted works created before 1970 are now regarded as being in the public domain.
After the United States' accession to the Berne convention, a number of copyright owners successfully lobbied the U.S. Congress for another extension of the term of copyright, to provide for the same term of protection that exists in Europe. The act was named after the late Congressman Sonny Bono (who was killed in a ski accident more than nine months before the act became law), who had favored this position as a songwriter and filmmaker even prior to his entry into politics.
Both houses of the United States Congress passed the act as Public Law 105-298 with a voice vote,[1][2] making it impossible to determine who voted for or against. President Bill Clinton signed the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998 on October 27, 1998.

I think this is true whether Dems or Republicans are in control. After all, it was Clinton that signed what I think was the awful omnibus copyright law in 1997 or 1998.
I think internet campaigns like the net neutrality campaign are the best hope, and that one did pretty well.
this is maybe the one issue where i tend to side with the corporations. i am just not happy with execution.

yes, great pull Steve. Wow, execution. That's it in a nutshell. I think too many people take the "moral" side of the argument, when the real question is enforcement, which until now, has been a complete and utter failure.
I think its pretty clear this is totally a non-partisan issue. The technology is just speeding up and the politicians, the courts, and the corporations can't seem to keep up, whatever law is passed, although I would bet if you did an actual survey, you would find far less people download than is thought.
Historical Perspective:
Edison owned the copyright to film, so therefore claimed the sole right to make films. This continued as a matter of law until the late 20s, but by then the founding film studios that have become the media giants of today had already totally captured the market.
The general reason given is this -- Edison studio films were boring. Films that were nominally "illegal" were much more exciting.
That reminds me, has anybody read "The Five Fists of Science" by Matt Fraction? Didn't he touch on this issue in that book, from a historical perspective?

Changing topic a bit -- I just read the first trade of DMZ based on the iFanboy video discussion of Vertigo books (was that the one?) I am totally into it. I have to be honest, I have been through the first 4 trades of Ex Machina and I just can't get real excited by it.
It's probably an unfair comparison, but Ex Machina seems too...softcore, but that's me because I listen to too much politics. DMZ makes war much more real to me by dropping it right on top of the U.S., making it real, as in what if we were in the middle of the firefight, not watching it on TV. I really appreciate a gutsy book like that. This was the book that really made me think comics really do push an envelope that other media are afraid to push...
And I don't mind the cheaper paper quality. Almost adds to the appeal of the book. I was totally "huffing" the paper...

So this is why I had to go through goddamn metal detectors to see Spiderman 3 opening night

Ted Grant's great, but I agree that he wouldn't work in a solo title. He's just a cool character to use for cameos and in team-ups.
Again, I'd be thrilled to see Wildcat Jr. team up with Robin.

When I was a young lad I used to like girls,
I'd play with their corsets and fondle their curls.
'Till one day, my lady I caught with some churl,
Now you'd never get treated that way by a moose.
Chorus
Moose, moose, I likes a moose,
I've never had anything quite like a moose.
I've had lots of lovers, my life has been loose,
But I've never had anything quite like a moose.
Now when I'm in mood for a very good lay,
I go to my closet and get me some hay.
I go to my window and spread it around.
'Cause moose always come when there's hay on the ground.
Chorus...
Gorillas are all right on Saturday night,
Lions and tigers, they puts up a fight.
But it's just not the same when you slam your caboose,
As the feeling you get when you humps with a moose.
Chorus
I've done it with beasties with long flowing hair,
I'd do it with snakes if their fangs were not there.
I've done it with walrus, a monkey, and goose,
But it's just not the same when you screw with a moose.
Chorus
Now that I am old and advanced in my years,
I look back on my life and shed me no tears.
As I sit in my chair with my glass of Matheus,
Playing Hide-The-Salami with Melba the Moose.
Chorus...
I wouldn't worry about Mike too much. He's probably in some Euphoric state, or hungover state celebrating the Senators victory and advancement in the playoffs. He'll be back when they get the beats from the Sabres, all melancholic.

How I Almost Died by Paper
This morning as I walked to my 9:00 AM Photography class, I was run over by a car. An SUV in fact.
In order to get to class I walk down a very wide sidewalk along a fairly quiet boulevard. The sidewalk itself is adjacent to a rather huge parking lot. There are two entrances with ticket gates along my walk, and cars often pull in to park. This is true of this morning, when I was in a hurry to reach my class. A woman working for the parking authority (located across the street) drove up in a large champaigne-colored SUV, blocking my path. She paused at the gate, waiting for the bar to be raised. Assured that my presence was known to this woman (I'd been walking in clear view as she pulled up) I proceeded to walk around the back of the SUV. This is when she lurched backward.
I usually wear my messenger bag or art student man-purse on my left side, but my right shoulder has been out of whack lately, so I'd switched it to the left shoulder, thus placing my bag on my right hip. This took the brunt of the impact. It was a light tap for an SUV, but it was enough to send me stumbling out toward the street. I lost my footing and dropped to my knees. The SUV continued in reverse, maybe a yard or so. When it reached me, I dropped to my side and then quickly rolled onto my stomach as the SUV rolled over top of me. I crawled out in enough time that the incline didn't pin me under the vehicle's bumper.
I got up and was unscathed. The woman had gotten out of her vehicle. She claimed she didn't know what had happened. That she was frazzled and had reversed by accident. Was I alright? I was. I really wasn't sure what to do. I was just astonished that it had happened and was maybe in denial of the whole incident. I was also still in a hurry for class, so I told her to just be careful and that I really promised I was just fine, honest. I continued on my way.
And I am okay, but I really felt I should talk about it for some reason. I didn't want to worry anyone at home, because I'm fine. It wasn't a strong impact, and it was just scary more than anything else.

Glad you're okay, dude.
Funnily enough, I almost got hit by a car coming out of a parking lot this morning. It was the closest that has ever come to happening. Nearly took out my legs. Jersey plates.
Ha! I probably did make that sound a little more Jack Bauer than it really was.
Glad you're okay too, Conor. Where would we get our DC commentary and Bat book recommendations if that guy had taken you out?
Cap was watching out for both of us today.

Man thats harsh, glad you're ok. Awsome write up too, very action movie.
I got hit by a car last year, I was on my bike and I got thrown 10 feet, luckily I landed on my bag, and got away with only a hurt elbow.
It seems school bags save alot more lives than i thought.

It's basically a popcorn action movie with ham fisted politics, it's fun but not as essential as everyone says.
I've read all the issues that have come out so far and I honestly can't even recall what the story is about anymore. It's been that long. I won't be buying #13.

Yeah, I'd have to agree with Masta P. I've only read Ultimates in trade, it's fun, but hardly essential. I loved the first volume, dug the second...and have the first volume of Ultimates 2 but have yet to crack the spine...

As for Ultimates, I think the series has really exceeded my expectations (except for release schedule, obviously). If the book came out frequently, I would easily choose it to be the best Ultimate title out there.

I'm not sure Cho merits any more attention than any other artist for whatever reason. I'm actually a bit more interested in how a writer and artist "interact." I was not a big gushing fan of all of Tim Sale's art on Batman: Long Halloween and Dark Victory, but I was quite impressed by how well Loeb and Sale mesh together, with a nice dynamic between them that flows well, story and art. I think you can say a story "flows" from panel to panel, and so too art, but you can also spot when an artist and writer are a bit out of sync.
Cho? Yeah, big busty women, but are they really all that more busty when drawn by other artists? How does "Cho flow" with Bendis? -- to me that's a better question. I'm also not a big fan of over doing it on the splash pages. Just take a look at New Avengers: The Collective (#16-20) and most of the CW main book. Way too many splash pages, a little more story would have been appreciated.

Interesting proposal. (I was being sarcastic about Cho. :D )
Thinking quickly about it, it's pretty interesting of how wide of a variety of artists Bendis is working with or has worked with (Maleev, Oeming, Yu, Cho, Bagley) and I think they all "flow" really well in terms of being a great fit for the feel of the book.

Yeah, Bendis does work with quite a few artists, though he does do a lot of books! But, I think Fred is right that Bendis must be really working closely with the artist. If you compare Bendis and Cho with Bendis and Maleev, or Bendis and Bagley, it's all quite different. Very nice. I think the Bendis/Maleev combo is the most distinctive, and always nice to look at.
I did notice that you left off David Finch -- Bendis did lots of work with him. He's OK, but my main problem with him was that just about every single man's face looked like just about every other man's face. Steve Rogers was blond, Stark brunette with mustache, but otherwise it was the indentical face for every single guy, including the Japanese people when the new Avengers went to Japan.
Some of you guys may be looking at the boobies, but... Finch's male face thing (a world of clones) was just a bit annoying to me...

Ah…yes. My omission of Finch was definitely not intentional. I can understand why people might not like it, but to me, he epitomized the feel of the New Avengers pre-CW. Yes, everything’s has super muscles, but I really liked it. I guess I never really noticed the clone-thing. I’m just sad he’s off doing Moon Knight now.

I think Finch was just fine. I quite enjoyed a lot of stuff he did with Bendis others were not so crazy about, and New Avengers: Breakout (first 6 issues) was all quite good. It is hard to go wrong with Bendis. I think Finch is very capable. I personally just kept noticing that all the men's faces looked like all the other men's faces -- which is just a personal nitpick. If you have a chance, flip through books by Finch, take a look at the faces, and you'll see what I mean. Lots of big chins, all the same chin.
