Halcyon, a privately funded company, has bought the rights to the Terminator franchise from Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar, with plans to produce a fourth film, Variety reported. The first three Terminator films all featured Arnold Schwarzenegger; it's unlikely the current governor of California would be involved in the fourth film.

Terminator 4 would be based on a script by writers John Brancato and Michael Ferris, who penned Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. The script, which has been kept under tight wraps, picks up with John Connor in his 30s, leading what's left of the human race against the machines. It is being seen as the start of a new trilogy and an attempt to reinvent the franchise with new cast and plotlines, a la Batman Begins and Casino Royale.

Moritz Borman, the former CEO of Intermedia Films and executive producer of T3, will produce. Kubicek and Anderson will co-produce, and former PolyGram Films marketing president Peter D. Graves will be executive producer and oversee marketing of the picture.

Halcyon was created by entrepreneurs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson. It acquired the right to produce Terminator films, future merchandising and licensing ventures.

No director or cast has yet been secured for Terminator 4, which is being earmarked for a summer 2009 release.

Meanwhile, the trade paper reported that the Fox broadcast network is said to be impressed with The Sarah Connor Chronicles, a Warner Brothers TV-produced hourlong drama pilot based on the Terminator characters and mythology. It could be ordered to series as early as this week.

Let the milking of the franchise begin!

Actually I'm quite interested in the Sarah Conner Chronicles, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for that one.

In all honesty, I love the idea of finally see the future war. It get's me ultra psyched. I went out and bought some HSX stock on it today.

Yeah it would be cool to finally see this future war and I think they really could do a good job of revitalising the story with a new trilogy. Lets hope they do a good job of it.

I wasn't too sure about the Sarah Connor Chronicles at first. Linda Hamilton in Terminator 2 was my childhood role model....

but after seeing Lena Headey in 300. I'm very curious to see how she'd do as Sarah Connor.

Did anyone see Starship Troopers 2?

Yep, saw it and enjoyed it for what it was. Shame we didn't get a proper epic sequel.

Did her parts get in the way of all the bits with the semi-naked men?

;)

Personally I thought she did fine with the part, considering it was just filler.

Are you serious? Sure some of her stuff had some heavy handed moments, but all in all I really enjoyed her part of the story. It broke up the action into chapters and it explained why they only had 300 poor bastards fighting instead of the whole army.

I completely agree. The addition of her character arc back in Sparta really helped improve the story in my opinion. I read the comic and wasn't very impressed. I failed to feel any sort of connection with the characters and their journey. But by expanding the queens' story, and giving us a glimpse of what was left behind and what they were fighting for I found the film much more interesting than the original graphic novel.

My only question is isn't there any other way to die besides decapitation. I mean come on, can't someone just be speared through or something.

Of course there is! But decapitation makes for a better bullet time, blood splatter effect.

Christian Bale has signed to play John Connor in a total of three Terminator movies, it was confirmed at Cannes.

The actor is currently shooting fourth instalment Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, which is due for release next May.

Victor Kubicek of makers Halcyon told the BBC that Bale will play the rebel leader in two more films, saying: "Christian was our first choice and he's a big fan of The Terminator, so we're very lucky.

"But with Batman, he's already done the whole franchise thing, so we weren't sure he'd respond."

Common, Sam Worthington, Anton Yelchin and Moon Bloodgood will also star in the fourth film, which is directed by McG.

Bale will next be seen in Batman Begins sequel The Dark Knight.

Well this gives me some hope at least!

I still feel that three films is pushing it, if they made it into a single long(ish) flim, where they showed the mass battle with Skynet and the machines, ending up with a scene sending Kyle and the T100 (Arney cameo anyone :)) back. hence completing the cycle of the story.

edit:
i can however see how they could spin it to three films. (using a LoTR comparison)

film 1: getting out of the bunker, travelling, meeting up with people (a la fellowship of the ring)

film 2: few years on, assembling army, first attempts at strikes at the machines (get to see first efforts of skynet in making the terminators. T1 / T10)

film 3: epic battle and the last scene would be sending kyle and the terminator (arney cameo) back hance completing the circle.

I'm excited but scared all at the same time. It's real easy to screw this up.
