I could watch someone typing unix commands in a terminal all day!
haha. I really enjoyed the episode, mostly because it just enforces my urge to get a job and forget about community college for a while and just focus on buying expensive pieces of hardware to hack and tweak to death, regardless of whether or not I will use the final product or the practicality of it all.
I want an appletv to mess with. I need to go install gentoo or something now ><
EDIT: So, will subSystm episodes be released instead of "full" episodes or separately from Systm "Whenever they are called for" or something like that?

so after a year....Kevin isn't in there...and all Dan did was intro the show (which on of thoe other dudes could have done)? Are those other chieftains running the show now or are they just down with the Apple TV?
Also, it was pretty sweet to see how to make the Apple TV all the sweeter, but really.....wouldn't most people be better off building a PVR style box? You know, MythTV etc etc?

You know, I would love for Patrick and Dave to be the new hosts. First of all, I think we could all use more Patrick in our lives (And because I laugh whenever he says "Get your ________ on!") and Dave did a nice job as co-host. The credits labelled them as hosts and Dan as a co-host I think, which works, and if Dan does little intro/outro things with those two as the regular hosts I would love it. It seems that the reason Systm wasn't regularly released was primarily because of Kevin being so busy (At least that is what I've read here as the reason) and if these two "taking over" means a regular release date then I would love it.

I am very excited to work on Systm and everyone should expect a regular release schedule from here on out. In fact after a brief celebration with the crew about releasing episode 7, I am back at the house already working on the next episode.
What can you do?
Keep the ideas coming. I will be on the forums on a regular basis (daily more than likely) and I need you feed back. Got a show idea? Post it and I will work on building it. Better yet, build it tell me about it and if its exciting enough we might talk to you and maybe even get you on the show.
Thank you everyone and get ready for more Systm.

Thanks for the new ep. I thought it was really good. I thought the pace (I am not the cleverest so it could have gone slower for me :D although it would only be watchable by me) was good and you guys really went over everything and I think I want to give it a go as the tutorial went over everything and mentioned that there were other methods but the example showed worked best. All I need now is an Apple TV and a Mac (and I need to lean some UNIX).
I just watched it via iTunes my only issue would be was that I could not see the UNIX code. Is there is a large iTunes version?

Great to see that Systm is back!
Patrick is always great and Dave seems to be a great guy to do Systm, so I think the new hosts will be fine. :)
Regarding this episode specifically, though, I think it was a little too much reading of commands while typing away.
I like UNIX as much as the next guy, but I think it would have been better to take one step back detail-wise and go with just describing what they were doing, why they were doing it and with which tools, instead of reading all the exact commands out loud, would have made for a better viewing experience.
(Then of course the exact commands should be in the show notes, or on-screen or whatever.)

That's great news. The subject of the apple.tv hacking was great. I was looking forward to it and they went into great detail. Which is a good thing. I just got bored really quickly with the endless typing of unix commands - perhaps in the future they will simply show what to type instead of actually typing it - and then just mention that it will also be in the shownotes.

The biggest version is the 640x320 (http://videos.revision3.com/systm/0007/systm--0007--appletv--large.h264.mov). I don't think it is on the iTunes feed yet, but it should be in the near future. In the interim you can always manually add the feed (http://revision3.com/systm/feed/quicktime-large) to it yourself.
If by UNIX code, you meant the commands, they are all written out for you in the "article (http://revision3.com/systm/appletv)" section.

No, that wasn't the point of Systm. That was more the point of thebroken, Systm was meant to be (and has been) an instructional type show.
Downloading the new episode now, i said a long time ago i wouldn't care if Kevin or Dan were hosts, i just wanted some Quality show, and from comments above it seems like that's what we've got :-D Can't wait to watch this, and future episodes.

drandolph
05-12-2007, 10:14 PM
Yes, we could have used the tab key. We could have even made a script to automate the process and even skip over some of the boring steps like mv and ssh enable but we hope to cover some basics as well as some more advanced stuff on Systm. That way the viewers that are not that familiar with shell will get a little introduction and the viewers with mad shell skillz can walk away with a run down of what to do. One thing that we hope happens is that everyone is watching all of the episodes because we will try not to cover the same basics more than once and build on what we have done before. That being said... If we are making it too simple or too hard let us know. Sometime we might gloss over a subject that we expect you to know and if enough people need for us to step back and explain more we could make a sub-systm to help out.
In fact when i first started writing the how-to for the AppleTV I wanted to just copy over all of the files while the drive was still connected to the mac and get it done the extremely short and easy way with very little shell interaction. Then I thought it would be a good idea to take the long road to show off some basic commands and some little side programs like fugu and iPartition.
Let us know if you think we should take the shortest road everytime or if we should try and throw in a few extra little nuggets of knowledge when we can.
A how-to show doesn't work if the viewer doesn't know how-to.

Good to see Systm back.
But is there a reward for spotting all the typos in the command line stuff? If you're going to go to such lengths to show every step of a process, you really need to double check or people will just complain when they mess up their systems.
Oh - and according to the end credits, it's still 2006.

Of course there is a reward. The reward of helping others do the hacks correctly. Also if there is a typo we will work to correct it in the article. So let us know what typo's you found and we will do our best to get the information out there, not to mention give credit where credit is due. Oh and you also get to surprise me because everything was tested and re-tested to try and avoid errors but that doesn't mean its perfect.
BTW I saw the credits as well and had a little laugh, don't worry that will get fixed next episode. I mean honestly how often do you think about changing that? (maybe the answer should be once a year)

05-13-2007, 12:49 AM
Okay, this probably isn't the best place to post it but i didn't want to start a new thread just for this.
What i wanted to say was that even though dd has no progress bar there is a way to check how far along it has come.
If you send the SIGUSR1 signal to it it will display something like this:
140513+0 records in
140512+0 records out
71942144 bytes (72 MB) copied, 17.5907 s, 4.1 MB/s
So in this case, i have copied 72MB of my disk and the speed is 4.1MB/s. That will give you a hint on how far along you've come and how much time is left.
Sending SIGUSR1 is done by typing "kill -USR1 `pidof dd`" (don't worry, it won't kill it :) ).
Hope that helps someone :)
Nice episode, nice to see new systm content.

Suck it up and move on, baby. This isn't digg. ;)
BTW, I was being sarcastic...
Of course there is a reward. The pleasure of helping others do the hacks correctly. Also if there is a typo we will work to correct it in the article. So let us know what typo's you found and we will do our best to get the information out there, not to mention give credit where credit is due.
Actually, I may have been slightly over-dramatic and the main typo I found only appeared on screen, not in the article. The only typo I spotted on screen (apart from the copyright date) was an occurrence of "finder.app" when it should have been "Finder.app" - although I'm sure at one point Patrick said to add a slash to /dev/disk0s3 (which would be wrong).
BTW, you and Patrick worked very well together, so I'm looking forward to more - I'm just not *entirely* convinced of the need to speak out every command... it did make the whole thing a little yawn inducing, despite the subject matter being sound.
It may have been better to just cover the process up to getting SSH working (giving the in-depth stuff in the show notes), then talked more broadly about what the hacks can do - including getting the AppleTV front-end running on an Intel Mac.
Oh - and the ATVFiles plugin works just fine over a network already (AFP or SMB). Just mount it and set your mount point as the root directory for ATV. Details are on the awkwardtv.org wiki

First time I watched this show and I liked those two...I liked the show and since it is now going to get more regular guess I have to find another vidcast to squeeze in the day to watch haha. :D
Oh... from the article:

should probably be:
sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/disk0s3
(added a space, removed a slash)

I'm glad to see the show is back...it was a pretty good one. My only comment is similar to some others. The show was quite drawn out by the realtime speed typing of cmdline. I think a cooler way to go about things might be to explain each step but not to the degree of saying each character, etc. just logically read or sumarize the line and then display the full line on the screen (perhaps in a black bar at the bottom and keep the camera on the hosts).
Other than that it was a great thorough show! Can't wait to see more!

You guys really hit the mark on this one. Pat gets to spread his geek wings and on a *****in new set, no less. I really hope Pat becomes a mainstay for Systm. I agree that the command line stuff took away from the interest of the show, but I thought that it was in a cooking show format anyway, and they tend to go into a bit of detail.
Sigh, I really wish I could do what you guys do. That stint with the 24 clock was so ingenious, that I wish I had thought of it. I love to talk tech and edit video, so you'd think a vidcast would be up my alley, but you need money, equipment, and talent to do that. Reno really isn't a techy town anyway.
Great job guys, can't wait top see the next one!

I don't know what you guys where expecting, the second coming of Christ maybe...
In episode three, they made cables for 45 minutes. This is what SYSTM is.
The whole point of presenting this sort of content in internet video was to present a procedural how-to in as much technical detail as possible. The kind of detail that wouldn't be possible through any other medium.
The idea as never to recreate "The Screensavers" but to suggest what "The Screensavers" may have been like if freed from the segmented cable TV format.
Please, let SYSTM be what it is and not what you want it to be.

Nothing says, "I'm a unix n00b" than pronouncing daemon as day-mun. It comes from an old english text and was originally spelled dæmon which was later changed to demon.

daemon
Pronounced DEE-mun or DAY-mun. A process that runs in the background and performs a specified operation at predefined times or in response to certain events. The term daemon is a UNIX term, though many other operating systems provide support for daemons, though they're sometimes called other names. Windows, for example, refers to daemons as System Agents and services.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/D/daemon.html
and most web pages I can find claim the pronounciation of the computer term DAEMON to be pronounced as DAYMUN.

Thx for Apple TV owerview but please be more concentrated when you are typing a command and try to understand what are you doing.
Then yuor typed mout -o remount,rw/dev/<some device> had a mistake you should put a [SPACE] after rw to separate parametrs and this comand only remounts partition in RW mode but next command line you typed remounts partition with option user writable.
P.S.
Use [TAB] and double [TAB] for typing commands.

2. Has a 2.5 in adapter on it and not a separate part to keep track of like other models.
3. Provides power for 2.5 drives from usb, the ones with adaptors still require you to use the external supply.
Hope it helps.
